After loosing the littlest dog a few weeks ago, although never said its just a fact that I'm a small dog person and one day I'll have another.
Not yet as its too soon and I still miss my little man very much, I don't ever want to feel I'm replacing or whatever!

My worries are firstly ive noticed recently as I guess I've taken more notice in little dogs (in the hope I can pick one up and have a snuggle!) Some are SOOOO yappy and this is really something I couldn't cope with! Is this avoidable/trainable or do certain breeds yap more than others? My dog just wasn't a yapper naturally, He'd bark to guard his house like the others but not for no reason.

Secondly The two labradogs will just love any puppy. The madder and more playful the more they will love it, they are not a problem....But new collie might be. She seem's not to be 100% with other dogs and although has never snapped does get a bit growly with them. The labs are big enough to fend for themselves but I worry a puppy might not be.
She has has a few litters and been a great mum, don't know if this is a relevant fact!?
I see so many adverts for puppies stating they need a home as current dog isn't happy/ they are not getting on. Do these people not give enough time? Maybe they don't introduce properly or will some dogs just not accept a puppy?

Like I say I'm not talking now, maybe next summer but am a bit worried!

I'm a 'little dog' person currently trying to enjoy what I think will be my last little dog's summer. Trying that is, not to be too anxious about her and just concentrate on our time together.

However, looking around at other little dogs, none other seem to come close to her. For me she is, and always has been, practically perfect. I'm currently boarding after two King Charles Spaniels at the moment and they are everything she isn't - neurotic, needy, very greedy, whiney and barky. And, as I discovered at the weekend, rubbish around horses.

There are a couple of other little breeds I quite like from a distance, (Border Terriers and Mini Schnauzers) but don't know how they are temperament wise.

I'm not sure small dogs are any more barky than big dogs in general, its just that its more high pitched. Maybe a deep woof is more acceptable?! I'm sure there are training aids/tricks out there to help if you did end up with a serial yapper!

It's still early days for you after the loss of your little man, I'm sure if and when the time is right then your next little friend will find you xx

Schipperke! Little-known breed that deserves more attention. Brilliant house guards, great with kids and horses. Bark to guard house, but isn't yappy bark. Don't need much exercise, but happy to walk miles. Busy bodies, very loyal and funny. Only downside is that they moult a lot.

We have 2 cavaliers and they are the total opposite of what meems has said! Loving, friendly, happy to be left alone for a few hours without fuss, very sensible around the horses, good with other dogs and kids and generally awesome dogs! Maybe we just bought them up right, my younger one Poppy was at the yard and loose with the horses since she was tiny and was super socialised.

I think you'll be fine with another new small dog, you sound sensible and are planning ahead so I'd say go and find a new small furry bundle :) Maybe you could get your collie to go on play dates with some younger dogs and see what she's like? Not sure if that would help but its just an idea :)

My new pup is small ,a mini schnauzer. The hype about them here is enough to make someone walk away...snappy,barkers,little horrors....how untrue.Ive been blown away by this little black dog...she's loyal, great fun, intelligent .She walks a thronging Italian market with aplomb,at heel, and people are very curious about her ,especially her good manners. my big standard poodle plays well with her and she holds her own.Her coat is non shedding, and I spend half am hour a week stripping out dead coat so she is sleek as black silk.
I have read the blacks are more mellow than the salt and peppers..I think this breed would be perfect for your situation.

Memes, I really wish you the very best summer with your little dog. Just find time to sit with her, even if your supposed to be flat out busy ;)
The sunday my little dog was pts I just thought stuff everything and sat in the sun for ages with him. I never sit down in the day but am eternally happy I did that afternoon.
I like all the breeds mentioned, although a friend has a few borders who have put me off slightly but I tend to forget mine was a complete monster in his younger days!
I love and have never heard of the Shchipperke (sp!). I've never heard of them so no idea how hard one would be to find (or how expensive!)
I've seen so many ads recently for littlies that I'm sure when the time is right I'll find something easily enough.- either that or every advert will vanish!
Training from day one will be the way forward then I think!
Thanks, but more positive about it all!

If you are really worried about your BC what about talking to a breed rescue for the dogs you like? So you see if new dog gets on?

Just sorry about losing your little dog. It is so tough and the worst part of sharing your life with a dog
