Hi everyone! If any of you have got any advice or experience on cobs and their rate of maturity, please pass it on! I'm completely new to this and need all the advice I can get.

I have recently bought my first cob who I would like to do a bit of showing with. He currently stands at 14.3hh. He was a late foal and is 4 this year. He is Clydesdale x Hackney. He still has a very 'baby face', if you know what i mean?!

When I bought him a few weeks ago, he looked very level between his wither and his back end so we were doubtful that he would grow much but over the last few days his back end appears to have grown a bit. Is it likely he will grow some more at this age? Someone has told me that cobs do mature quite slowly. It would be great if we could get to about 15.1hh as all the other cobs in his class look much taller and chunkier (even though we initially thought he might even be too chunky to show!) Is he likely to fill out much more at 4?

horse can grow till they are aleast 6 /7 my friend has a clysdale cross cob he was to make 14.2 but 15.2 now he didnt stop till he was 6
know he is filling out welcome to

I had a cob, who when we first had him was 14.2hh and five yrs old, when we sold him he was 15.1hh and nine yrs old, he didn't mature fully until he was eight. So there is hope

Going by past experience this type of horse don't often mature until they are between 6 and 8 years of age.

Mycob was narrow as a knife at five and in a medium width saddle. By seven he had grown a lot in stature including an inch of bone in a year! He is now in an XXX wide tree saddle, so yours may have a lot more to do!

That's great news! I'd still love him just the same if he didn't grow but it'd be nice to go in the ring and not be the 'little one'! He might start getting a complex about it!

I'll try and get some pics on here!

Don't know if this will help, but this is my cob when I first bought him as a just 5 year old he was about 15 hands....

Grown upwards and outwards now and is 11 and stands at 16.1, he didn't really mature till he was about 8 years old, I am still waiting for the brain to cath up though!!

Him now...

So you could be in for a surprise lol, I thought he was going to be too small for me when I got him!

My show cob was 14.2 when I got her at 4, and was in a narrow / medium saddle. She didn't really finish maturing til last year - she was 8 last year, and suddenly seemed to grow wider and chunkier. She is now just under 15.1 and is in a XXX+ wide saddle.

From a Judge's point of view I think he looks like a very good stamp of a cob.

Yes, I'm sure he will grow a few more inches, yet - but do let it come naturally. Dr Green is a wonderful, natural (virtually free) thing and he will do a lot of growing over the next two or three summers. Don't be tempted to overdo the vitamins, supplements and the like.

IMO there is nothing worse than an obese/overweight cob which can't gallop down the long-side without nearly collapsing afterwards!

Thank you everyone for sharing your comments and own experiences. I think I can safely assume that my boy has a bit of growing to do. Especially since he seems to have shot up another inch behind over the weekend and lost some of the 'roundness' from his back end.
Despite being a little weak and gangly behind we still won the ridden cob class (at only his second show) at the weekend, qualifying for the Royal London Show!!!

I'm so proud of him!
