wintec or thorowgood

I hate synthetic saddles really but I am toying with the idea of one for Nits when I back her.

I've looked at both websites and they look roughly comparable but does anyone have any opinions either way.

She is TB and I'd probably like to shove it on brown horse (or at least have the option) who is TBxWB. The thorowgood high wither sounds like what they should have but I wouldn't actually say either of them are hard to fit so would standard be ok, given that wintec don't do a high wither?

I want the changeable gullet ones if you couldn't guess!

Sorry if that's all a bit garbled!

I have one of each and I really rate them both! The wintec has quite a cutback head so can and does suit TB types quite well... My mare fits a TG Dressage nicely and a Wintec 500 GP nicely :)

The new wintecs are a much better fit than the older wintecs and should be fine on a TB type. The standard thorowgood is a better design but, like all saddles, donesn't fit everything.

I would try and get ahold of a Thorowgood standard and a new wintec and see which one suits best: they're quite different so if one doesn't fit the other may.

The older wintecs you can still buy cheaply are a horrible fit on many horses. They are for narrow TB's but then don't have enough support at the front of hollow withers.

I tend to prefer the Thorowgoods mainly because I find them comfier! Mine has a nice padded synthetic suede seat so is lovely to sit on whereas the wintecs I've encountered have all been a bit slippery and not as shaped (though they may have changed). I have a high wither for my warmblood and it fits him well. Have had it nearly four years now and it's still in good condition, have never needed to replace any parts of it (and I ride in it nearly everyday) so it is doing well. :)

Most people who complain about the old Wintecs are people who have horses with cob type confirmation ie. flat withers and a round barrel.

I have found the old Wintecs fit my warmbloods with the exception of one who had the above mentioned confirmation and I backed him in a Wintec Wide saddle. He is now in a Wintec Isabell which fits him well as his wither has come up.

I haven't tried the Thorogood so I can't comment on them but have backed 14 youngsters in the Wintec GP without a problem.

thank you all very much :)

I suspect that I don't overly need a high wither one. I am rootling around on ebay now and obviously standard fit thorowgoods are easier to come by. I would say both my horses are a fairly 'standard' shape.

I have four saddles in my shed for two horses, goodness knows why I'm looking at another. I quite like the idea of nice grippy synthetic for this one though.I think she might be lively.

Brown horse was done in my normal gp which is far too big for me so I was sloshing about all over but he's a dopey big thing who was never going to do anything!

If yoru against synthetic then the Thorowgoods actually look leather, until you really give it a close inspection you wouldn't know the difference.

I always had wintec but a couple of years ago we tried a throwgood and I love them, really comfy and we just got the leather version for Andy because I think they fit the horse and rider very well :)

ETA: Our old welsh x tb had the high wither one and it was brilliant, we also got it for Andy as it just seems to suit his build nicely.

I love my T6 Thorowgood Dressage saddle :) Much comfier than Wintecs I have ridden in, and have managed to fool plenty of people into thinking it was a leather saddle.

That actually is quite convincing JP!

Sounds like either is probably quite good then. I'll have to try both and see which is better.

For what it's worth - I just bought a Tekna A4 jumping saddle which is synthetic and aside from struggling to get used to CC's it seems pretty good. The saddler was very impressed qith the quality and price, it looks like leather, can be adjusted by heating. I use it on my full TB who is quite difficult to fit :)

^ very similar to my experiences. I love my Wintecs.

I have just bought a wintec 500 with cair and adjustable gullet. I put it on my girl today and it looks great.
My friend thought it was a new leather one it looks that good. I thought it was the best option for backing my girlie.

is it dressage or GP you after? I have a high wither dressage thorowgood T6 (looks like leather) nearly new 17.5" saddle for sale pm me if interested.

cant speak at all for thorowgoods, the wintec 500 has synthetic girth straps which i detest!! the wintec 2000 has leather girth straps so MUCH smoother and easier. Also has a faux suede seat so extra grippy for the bouncy ones....! :D

Ahh but when it rains you get soggy knickers, the seat is like a sponge! :p

You can change the synthetic girth straps to leather ones btw on the 500 :)

Have you considered the GFS Genesis synthetic adjustable saddles.

I have one and it is excellent - really well priced too compared to the wintecs (that seem to have got expensive!)

As a result of me having mine another 3 people on the yard have bought one too as they were all so impressed by it.

I only realised the GFS one existed at about 1 o clock this afternoon. I will keep my eyes peeled for one second hand. I don't want to buy new as she'll have a show saddle fitted when she grows up.

Kezimac, ideally GP as I'm going to be backing in it and I like short stirrups (or relatively short) for a safety seat. I'm getting soft in my old age. If I don't turn anything up I will get in touch though, or if I can wangle some money from someone I could just have it for brown horse :)
