I got my ex racer, Pete, in January this year just before the bad bout of snow. He was already in a very poor condition and I have just started to see an improvement in him. I am desperate for him not to lose all his weight again this winter. Last winter we fed him speedi beet. I was looking at the cooked cereal conditioning meal. I think Baileys and Badminton do one of these. It sounded like it had more calories in it. What do people who feed this think of it/how does it differ from speedi beet?

Or if anyone feeds another product in the winter to bulk up the feed that they think is particulary good?

Thanks,

Laura and Pete.

What else was he having with the Speedibeet? The best and safest way to get weight on is to add oil, and micronised linseed is a cheap, non heating and very effective way to do that.

What about worming, teeth etc? The feeds you mention are high in starch and that is not brilliant for them, but will add weight, it can affect some horses badly though. A good quality balancer is a good idea, such as Top Spec, but that can liven up some horses, or D and H Suregrow can be used as a general purpose balancer and is cost efffective too.

if all he had was beet then he needs to have his vits/mins etc. topped up as beet alone doesn't provide them. haylage is better than hay, and keep him warm with rugs, don't wait until winter kicks in.

No, the speedi beet was simply to bulk up his feed. He has Baileys no.4 and Alfa-a Oil. He also has haylage. I am also going to add the topspec balancer. Hopefully, that will be enough. He has plently of brand new rugs.

Don't know if this is any help but my brother had a TB from the racetrack and we struggled to keep weight on him through the winter. Eventually found that speedi beet and D&H build up cubes (they do a mix as well) worked a treat. We fed him that with Blue Chip and a ton of hay and it worked much better. Good luck!

Definately give the topspec a go. I fed this to my 28yo tb with alfa a oil and speedibeet and it really made a difference. I would also recommend giving barley rings a go. I think it's the D&H ones I feed, they have linseed oil and they are mega-conditioning. I have found all other mixes/cubes to hot him up but these didn't and are really good for adding a handful when it's really cold.

PS the topspec also makes their coat really shiny. This is Monty in late february, the best he has ever looked coming out of winter:

Mine has done very well on Baileys Top Line cubes, he keeps weight all winter nowadays (was prone to drop it before he went on this stuff), he gets it with some chaff and sugar beet. I also add soya oil which is useful for calories.

The Top Spec balancer plus the Top Spec Cool Condition cubes give a really good result & shouldn't make him fizzy either as they're cereal free & low in starch.

i had the same prob as you i got my girl inbad condition just before winter and had to get weight on her she is an ex racer t/b as well i gave her ab lib hayledge allen page calm and condition and alpha a oil and high fibre nuts she pilled on the pounds at that was leaving out 24/7!x
