We're moving yards at the end of the month - last move was 3 years ago so feeling a bit nervous! Heading to the new yard on the weekend to give his stable a clean, put down bedding, put up rug racks/name plaque etc. I'm very happy his new stable doesn't have any rubber mats like his current one does, as I use straw for bedding, and rubber mats and straw are a nightmare together if the mats aren't sealed! Need to sort his rugs out before the move and send some off for cleaning/repairs. Also need to invest in a brighter head torch as I'll be poo picking his field at the new yard - any recs gratefully received :)

That's a good point, I did say i wanted to increase the height of my kickboards this year... i wonder how much they are nowdays £££££££
I can't answer, but when I last replaced a load of kickboards I discovered the gravel boards used by fencing companies were the same size and a whole lot cheaper when bought from B&Q

I found the Elico too small and they did not last, so I purchased two of these three years ago and am still using the first one.

Yes you do have to position the opening in a place they can't reach for a couple of days and then tighten the rope once they have eaten some hay.

I didn't think they lasted to badly. I've just bought one to replace the old one which has lasted since 2018. I did have to replace the rope but that was due to rodents chewing it.

I'm a bit jealous! wish i could just show my OH a photo and dissapear to do other things!!

You do sort of have to give the 'I'm just a woman face', hold wood while he cuts it and carry things. The odd supportive comment as you walk past looking VERY busy usually helps too. Bring the odd can of beer or cider helps fuel the work also.

Because he is such a squirrel with materials from work the hay feeder cost about £12.50 in screws. It doesn't look this good now. It needs a bit of love.

When i asked him to build the shelter, I laid all the timber out in the field in the way I wanted each panel to go together. Obviously he needed to adjust a few things to make it structurally sound. I have the enviable job of pulling all the nails out of the recycled timber.

OH bought me a cracking head torch off of Amazon. It wasn’t dear at all. You plug it in and charge. I think it has 3 settings, it’s very good, gives very good coverage.

Just realised that’s probably no help to you whatsoever!

Re head torches, I bought an Olight one 2 yrs ago and it's fantastic, although a bit bulkier than I'd like because I got one that you can also use as a torch or a worklight.

https://www.olightstore.uk/perun-2-head-torch

Expensive but charge lasts for ages and it's super bright and versatile, beam is easily 100m (but can be turned down).

I also have an old "NightSearcher" one that takes a single AA battery which is excellent and very compact. Sadly it doesn't look like they make this model any more but on the strength of how much use this one has had and its still going strong, I'd recommend the brand. Not as bright as the Olight though. I've been through a lot of headtorches in my time and wasted a lot of money on cheaper ones that just don't give a good light

We started tackling repositioning our Jelka mats today- big job!
They are brilliant but I wanted to tweak the layout a little. I'm also experimenting with creating some little tracks and loops out from the main block of mats.

VERY exciting, our new IBC hay feeders are finished and we've put them into the field.

Tops cut off, then heat gunned the sides and folded them over so no sharp edges.
They have metal bases so no rotting, plug holes in the bottom which we will leave open for drainage and then we have some foot long ground pegs coming to hold them in place from naughty boys who will try to move them.

So next on the list is to get a load of stone delivered to redo 2 winter gateways and another pallet of Jelka mats on order to go over the stone for their little toes- spoilt boys!!

Over the weekend we hired a mini digger and have dug out two drainage ditches to see if we can divert water away from the yard.

Then the mini digger was used to relocate the muck heap to the field it will be spread on at some point

And finally it hoiked up a dozen mud mats that are in 2 old gateways which we don't use now. They will be relocated but the grass was so long we couldn't do them by hand. They've got so much soil and grass attached to them they weigh an absolute tonne!

I'm also planning more stone for gateways and there's a new shelter coming late September. The old one was destroyed in the 2022 storms and I spent the insurance money on a pony!!

I'm ready!!

Spent last weekend getting the winter paddock ready. Did a last cut with the mower as it was getting a bit long and weedy again.

Put up fencing for strip grazing etc. Decided last minute to get some rubber matting for the field shelter, so I've held off putting any straw down yet.

Clipper blades are away being sharpened.

New rug purchased. Hay in the shed. Stables ready.

Pig oil spray is on standby for spraying feathers and tail ends.

Bring it on! 😀

I was hoping to have had my dung heap taken away by now, but the person who usually comes has cancelled 😡. It's cutting it fine as it needs to be gone before the mud comes or my field will be ruined for winter. As usual, winter is coming far too quickly for my liking 🙄
