Hello,

Going to buy myself (or my OH may do!) some Winter Riding Boots for Christmas.
Had a look on internet and would like some opinion on these 2 please:
Mark Todd Cook Tall Winter Boots
and
Mountain Horse Rimfrost Rider II

Also I am size 5 (38) and would like to know how the fitting is?
My calf is 32cm and height (bottom of foot to underneath the knee) is 39cm.

Which one would you recommend?

(or any other Winter boots which keep your feet warm! Budget is £90 maximum)

Thank you :-)

i can only comment on the MH rimfrosts, i LUUUUURRRRVVEE them. Sizing is pretty good, i'm a very normal 39 and the 39's fit perfectly! i havent got a tape measure handy so cant tell you the height of my leg but im fairly short and found the boots a bit long to start with but they soon dropped like leather boots do to the height that was needed. big thumbs up for them but very interested to see comments about the mark todd ones too!

Are the rimfrosts good for people with short very muscular calves? I'm considering saving for some for after christmas :)

i found them a bit too tall first few times but they did drop quickly so it wasnt a bother. as for calf width, i dont know their sizes but they do do a wide calf version as well. I found they were seriously good for riding in, they keep your legs and feet in exactly the right position.

I got the Mark Todd Cook Tall Winter Boots yesterday in the post and have to send them back as the I are WAY too small despite me ordering a whole size larger than I usually take (I take an 8 so ordered the 9) and not having thick ankles or large calves! If you do them them, get a whole size larger and the the "wide" calf even if you have skinny legs. According to the size chart, the "standard" calf fitting should have been perfect (my legs measure 40cm, the standard calf fitting in a size 9 should fit a 40- 41 cm calf) but can't get the zips up without a struggle.
As for height, I'm 5'9" and would have liked them to come up a bit higher on me as there are about 3" below my knee. I hate riding in boots that are too short as they get caught underneath the saddle flap.

I have the MH rimfrosts and also v happy with them. On second winter now and doing well, although a couple of small cracks from being stood on. Highly waterproof and v v warm. I think I might be investing in a new pair in the spring for next winter but they have seen a lot of wear (daily for riding, mucking out etc).

On fit, I bought wide because they were discounted and they are very wide. I have large calves but still have room inside for crumpled up jeans etc. Which is practical but prob not as flattering as a tighter fit. I would think a normal fit would be fine even on a chunkier calf.

I had a pair of the short rimfrost boots a couple of year back. I found them very warm for general yard work but they were far too clumpy for riding in (personal taste) oh and I meant to say the sole dropped off the boots after one winter :o

A little over the budget, but I bought a pair of Ariat Bromonts this week...the short boot version not the £200 tall boots. Whilst they are chunkier than my normal boots they are fine for schooling and its like having mini ovens on both feet...I can not recommend them enough :)

See I normally ride in short boots and leather chaps as I have short length of calves but muscular lower legs (not fat just too much muscle, so much so I have to HAUL jeans over them!) So I have cheapo 15 by 15 (inch? not totally sure!) chaps but on my calves they are way too big though the zip actually does up at the midway point of my calves, this is the hardest part to get my chaps over. Did have some tredsteps that lasted me barely two years which I can still use I think they are 15 x14's but my right calf is hard to get in due to being bigger than my left and the leather stretch part got stuck to itself...

So would they fit? I wanted to try find a stockist to go try on first but nowhere nearby seems to stock them. I aso wondered if they would do for local shows? I have some mountain horse size 5 wide calf and some brown leather soft long boots too but they are either too short in the foot now or too baggy at the top/long.

The joys of short dwarf chunky legs!! More like hassle! :)
