Does anyone else with these find it very hard to get the blade tension right?

I used to have the Harrier clippers but upgraded to the Swifts a few years ago because of ID mare's thick coat. However I have the same problem with both really, in that if the tension is wrong, they either won't clip at all, or they will only clip exactly in the reverse direction of the hair, any slight angle means they stop in the hair..

I tension according to user instructions. Ie loosen til blades running freely, tension til the noise changes, then another 1/2 turn.. Quite often I have to go a bit tighter to get them to clip though, and they do get warm, though less so since I got new non aerosol oil last year as recommended by the engineer on here..

I'd love a set I could fire the blades in and start immediately rather than fiddling...

The ID mare got a blanket this morning rather than a hunter clip as I wasn't at all sure the blades would clip the thickest hair on the top of her bum :(

I am intending to send blades off tomorrow to be sharpened btw, should I buy a second set? How many clips should I get from a set? Horse clean on surface but greasy and scurfy underneath I'm sure..

Any fellow wolseley users on here??

I have swifts , they were new last year when the pair I had had for about twenty years finally pegged out .
I don't find them hard to tension I just 'know' the right noise as I tension them I have been using them for years and years though.

I've been using mine for years too, but I'm not getting any better at it :(

Should they get quite hot where the clipper head joins the black bit of the clipper, or is that a warning they are too tight?

I clip against the hair in the normal way .
Are sure you have not got a poor set of blades ?

I'm beginning to wonder, though clippersharp have never said anything about them.

They will only cut exactly against the hair, 10 degrees off and they won't cut at all.

Anyone else have wolseley?

No, but I recognised your problem as similar to the issue I have with some heinigers and had a Google. ..

Does the tension screw have another screw inside it? Looks like it from photos.
I got chatting with a clipper engineer at YHL and I described the same problem. .. he said the screw inside the bigger tension nut adjusts the pitch of the top blade against the bottom one. It's not mentioned in the user manual. For the heiniger, the inner screw has to be absolutely flush with the big nut. Mine wasn't, quite. When I adjusted that, and then set the tension , no problem. Can't believe it was so simple. Have a play with that. If applicable, lol, like I say I don't own a pair but Google images suggested it might be similar! Can't quite tell though as none of the pictures are that clear ;)

Gracious milliepops, thanks for that...

I'll have a good look in the morning in daylight. .

I have the Swifts and find them very easy to tension. Have you watched the three part video on you tube with the tensioning info and what happens of the blades are rubbish or blunt? I found that really useful

No, but I'll certainly have a look for it :)

I found video from the engineer on you tube for tensioning. I past years I've had to keep stopping to take blades off to let them cool as they got red hot within 10 mins. Took me ages to clip. He said to tighten just enough to cut the hair. For my arenas this was hand tight, switch on and half turn till motor changed. I got Sharpened blades. Also read someone to replace the tension set every year (I suppose depends on number of clips) so new set plus got clipper sharp oil rather than use aerosol oil previously used and oiled between blades whilst assembling. Result was other than pause & clean the blades and put bit more oil on they hardly heated up. Oh & don't forget to clean the air intake of hair as you go as this can overheat.

Have you tried and new tensioning set? For me this usually works and I have a new set as a spare. I think they are cheap, about £7ish

Is there a new tension screw for wolseley?

I found a manual online and they seem to have changed slightly from mine.

Are they better?

Hi,
yes I have wolsley swift and I have the same problem, they have to be really tight if I want to clip otherwise the just don't clip the hair properly and seem to tug at the hair, I bath my horse first he is fully clipped, but they even do it on the second clip, I have had them serviced every year and the blades sharpened, use to get about 3/4 clips per year now I am lucky if I get 2, I have had them a long time, and on my second set of blades, I still have my old lister clippers, so often have to finish off clipping with those. I wouldn't buy wolsley swift again that for sure, I would go back to Lister as they are about 30 years and only got a new pair as they seemed to get hot quite quickly so thought they wear ready to break down, but they are still going strong, I just stop for a cup of tea while they cool down before starting again.
