Except (although them releasing in the 1990s was still stupid).
A widespread modern misconception is that the UK’s wild population of American mink originated from mass releases of mink from fur farms by animal rights activists in the 1990s. Many people will remember these dramatic events for the sheer numbers of mink involved. In fact, the wild population was established decades earlier from multiple escapes (and perhaps deliberate releases) all over the country.
Mink farms in the UK
Mink farms had been established in the UK from the 1920s, and expansion of the industry resumed after WWII. At its peak in the 1950s, there were 400 known fur farms in the UK, and there were suspected to be additional ‘backyard’ units. Mink were first confirmed to be breeding in the wild in 1956. By December 1967, wild mink were present in over half the counties of England and Wales, and in much of lowland Scotland.

The mass release of mink harmed both the mink ( many hundreds were killed on local roads) and local fauna. I do not deny that were escapes, but the mass release did indeed do harm, locally.

Mel Broughton is a very nasty individual my niece was subjected to a torrent of vile abuse as he mistakenly thought she was going to the Oxford Primate Lab. He protests there every Thursday and is closely watched as it was Oxford that he firebombed and received a 10 year prison sentence for. There are many places that have injunctions against him I expect Huntingdon is one of them. He has posted on FB his presence at Huntingdon earlier this month.

I think many people don't realise what a small world the animal rights activists inhabit tbh; anyone in league with MB must have done some ethical gymnastics in my view. There are others too and yes, they are carefully watched.

I think it's a slightly mad line of argument that political violence achieves nothing, particularly when posting, as many of us are, from a country like this one. The contribution of different drivers for change is incredibly nuanced and hard to pin down the relative contributions of those drivers. Academics put forward a whole range of views, but it's notoriously hard to pin down definitively through research.

And wars really aren't that different to violent protests, the level of breakdown in political discourse is just on a much bigger scale. As a country we spend billions on maintaining an armed forces as insurance against the likelihood that political discussion and negotiation will turn violent again at some point.

Ultimately though I don't believe that people chose whether or not to partake in violent protest based on a logical calculation about likely effectiveness. There are a couple of causes that I am passionate enough to fight for, but I'm not about to pop out petrol bombing because at the end of any day I have to be able to look back on the choices and actions that I took in that day and still be able to sleep at night.
