because my horse is having less hard food due to the better grass and 24 hour turnout she is having less food. unfortunately this seems to mean that she can taste/smell her supplements more. anyone know any tricks to get horses to eat their dinner?!!!

my friend is trying to get me on spiller cool concentrate where I don't need any supplements. it's not for me as mine are stabled so I want something bulkier, but it could be worth a look cos it sounds good?

Fox is on Hifi Lite (only a handful to slow her down as she isn’t a chaff fan!) and then just leisure mix to give it a bit of taste. I give her vit powder(which I think smells lovely) and a biotin hoof supplement that I don’t think sounds unpleasant. she just wont have any of it. if I take the supplement out, she gobbles it down……

there's a post on the new lounge wall about making marmite tea (marmite in hot water) to disguise the taste of different htings, apparently absolutely irresistible to all horses, and also good for keeping off flies and presumably pretty healthy as it's yeast extract too!! could try that!

My horse won't eat her supplements unless I put a small handful of Alfa A in. The smell of alfalfa seems to drown out everything else! I expect HiFi would be similar

Thank you all! will look into all these things, probably try marmite first as I would like to keep her on the feed she is on as I am happy with her condition on it and our feed merchant only has limited stock.

Does anyone know if marmite will effect behaviour of a excitable horse? I wouldn’t want to feed it if it were going to make her go crazy!

just a thought - my mare also refuses to eat feed with suppliments in unless i feed enough to hide the taste (over winter she is fine due to levels of feed) and is not really needing extra calories.... so i was recommended D&H equibites - and hey presto she loves them and feels v special to have a few treats twice a day

might not work for a horse who bites but works well for us

I gave her equibites last year, but although she doesn’t bite she is still young and was badly treated/neglected when she was tiny so I really have to be careful about tit bits! good thought though, could give some in a bucket.

I considered mint as I was sure I had seen it somewhere before, but when I had a look for some today I couldn’t see it! I have been told to use apple juice but I worry about all the sugar!

if feeding the equibites as a supplement, it is best to break them up into pieces (they crumble very easily) and feed as you would a supplement with a small handful of chaff or they just act the same as a normal treat....i was told this by a D&H nutritional represtenative who came to our yard when we had a lecture thingy from WHW on condition scoring etc

One of mine is a fussy so and so, he eats his medicine (won't let me syringe it down) with the aid of a grated apple and a big squirt of syrup (not the Tate and Lyle stuff, but the yucky gloop that comes in a squeezy bottle and goes on icecream/pancakes etc)

Allen and page say all vit and nutrients etc are included into their feeds so you dont have to add any extras. Or you could try a mint suppliment or apple juice?

Put Equibites in the with chaff or consider using a balancer just as Lo-cal or Anti-lam or maybe even Farriers Formula. My mare has a balancer as she wont each any powered supplements at all.
Try wetting her feed with apple or orange juice and mixing it well.
