Wood Pellet Bedding

I've used a wood pellet bedding for my horse for the last year and I really like it. He is a mucky boy when he wants to be and anything else I tend to use so much bedding to keep him clean.

I'm wondering if anyone uses it and wonder who you buy it off and at what cost. As I cant get it reasonably priced this year and think I may have to change bedding :( Which I really dont want to do. But I dont want to spend a fortune on bedding.

I recently bought Liverpool wood pellets too- i shopped round loads and they are cheapest.
- They are also brilliant on delivery and customer service.


Does anyone find them a bit dusty though? I think my horse is a bit too dry almost!
 
I found them horribly dusty and mine even had mould spores on them. Maybe I was doing something wrong but it was really unpleasant and the bedding company didn't want to know. Maybe it was how it was stored..?
 
*gulp* just realised I havent put my bedding order in!!

I've used Natures Best, last year used Liverpool Wood Pellet and will be using them this year cheaper and wonderful customer service and good delivery!!

I find all this quite interesting because my new horse is going to be on wood pellet bedding (minimal, over mats) at his trainer's yard.
It's a new yard with freshly laid mats and the standards of stable management are immaculate, so all their horses seem very clean on it, and it doesn't look dusty.

However, last year we went to a major show venue and stabled overnight. They were using wood pellet at the time, deep littered, but with fresh put in for the new arrivals. I couldn't beleive how dusty it was and had to avoid even skipping my mare out when she was in the stable as she has COPD. It also covered their coats and rugs - for once I was glad she was grey, as my pals with black and bay horses were driven mad by it.

I note this year that the venue has gone back to shavings...

Are there different grades and qualities, do some work better than others :~
 
From what I understand, different pellets can be different quality and they can be made of different woods...and these can have different properties.
 
I'm looking to change to wood pellets this year. Thought I'd buy a tonne from Liverpool wood pellets as they seem to be the cheapest delivered.

Can anyone tell me, after the bed is set up how many 10kg bags are required per stable per week?
 
The wood pellets I'm using at the moment are 13.5kg bags and I tend to use 1 bag every 7-10 days. And my boy is messy.
But I cant for the life of me remember the name of them. But I'm looking at the liverpool wood pellets as they seem to be the best value for money delivered that I have found so far :D

Sounds like Aquamax- they are 13.5kg bags and excellent value if you use one bag every 7-10 days- you might find you use more cheaper bedding and it works out more expensive.
 
I buy a ton a time from LWP in 15 k bags. I get through about 2 tonnes a year for my two and one advantage is that a ton takes hardly any storeage space compared to shavings or straw.

I get through a lot compared to most people - 1 -2 bags a week for Stinky and 3 and occasionally 4 for Farra, but we are talking about a clydesdale who will eat 3/4 bale of hay and drink 70 litres of water when in between 4 in the afternoon and 9 in the morning with the resulting consequences. I also remove the wet area twice a week as I don't want wet or smelly beds which I would otherwise have with her.

I have rubber mats and 4" deep beds over half the stable. They are quick and easy to muck out, not dusty and compared to shavings and megazorb which I was using, nearly half the price.

I have this year bought the LWP premium ones, and so far have only used them as cat litter, but they are white in colour and stay white and seem to be more absorbant - well with the cats they are.

I usually dump five bags in to start off. If I am feeling crazy I may use seven.

I have been using LWP for a year now. I have two wet geldings and I work full time. I have tried straw (wet and smelly and sets off my asthma), shavings (too expensive for a proper bed) and chopped straw (expensive and hard to work with).

This is the first time in 20 years of having a horse that I have really nice, deep beds. And they are so nice and easy to muck out. I don't bother to wet them anymore, I just chuck em down.

I've never had an issue with dust or mould, even in summer (maybe the damp air up North helps!).

Just had a look at Liverpool wood pellets website. Do you have to pay the 17.5% VAT for horse bedding or can you get away with saying it's for biofuel?
 
I'm trialling "feathabed" at the moment, 5.50 per bag, 6-7 bags to set up stable, not dusty at all, OH said it looks good enough to sleep on himself (and he's fussy lol!!) will be able to give more feedback in a couple of weeks, so far so good.
Potentially looking at LWP as they are cheaper, but just wanted to see how my messy boy got on with the wood pellet idea before finding a brand i like!

And de-fraud the taxman? Shocking!

LWP will charge you VAT in accordance with the information you provide them with.

If you chose to have your bio-fuel delivered to you yardr for storage that's up to you.......
