Wood Pellet Virgin!!...........How much water???

Right am laying a new bed next week of LWP. Stable is 12'x12' with rubber matting (but still normally have a full bed over half of the stable - otherwise my girl won't lay down).

I'm a total wood pellet virgin!!! So am guessing 10 sacks(15kg size) to start the bed, so how much water do I need to add?? Do I put the water into the sacks then lay or lay the pellets then water??

I have shared the order with a couple of others on the yard, but they have shavings bed, so are just adding to their exsisting beds. I currently use chopped straw, so thought it was best to start from stratch.
 
I use Corley biowood pellets (same thing!) I empty the bag onto the stable floor and add a watering can of water for each bag (more or less!) If you go on the Corley website they have a very valuable step by step guide on the best way of laying a new bed - sorry dont know how to do links!!
 
I use pellets. What I did when I was laying my first bed was tip the pellets and spread them out evenly over the stable floor and soak. I used a watering can so that the water spread evenly, they don't need to be swimming but I found that the nature's best I use needs a fair amount of water to start fizzing away! It may well be completely different for LWP, but I hope this helps a little!!
 
Nope don't do patience!!! Would hot water speed it up (like it does with sugarbeet)???

Blimey glad I asked as would never have added that much!!! Going to lay in the morning, to give time to fizz!!!

Is 10 bags about right to start a bed???
 
I think I put 7 of the 10kg bags in to start with, thought it doesn't look enough, but decided to wait and see, came in the evening to bring horse in and had a shock - the bed was very nice indeed.
 
Funnily enough ive just made my first order with Corley Bio wood this afternoon after getting fed up with the increasing price hikes on shavings and scarcity of them. The lady i spoke to was really helpful and explained to me that for an average box you would need between 6-8 bags for a stable and to start with perhaps 6 and then if you felt you wanted more then to add more. She explained that if i split the bag open and then poured 5.5 - 6 pints of water into the bag and leave for a few minutes for it to all mulch up. Once you had added water to all 6-8 bags spread out to form a bed and for the first 2-3 days only take out the droppings. After a few days take out the noticeable wet patch and add a scoop of pellets in its place, and from then on just keep topping up in this way. She said that most people using that method used between 1-2 bags a week depending on the horse.

Hope this helps, like i say, this will be the first time i will have used them so it will be interesting to see what they are like but im hoping they will be esier to use and a lot more economical.
 
I put mine on LWP on Thursday and he has had to be on box rest from Friday and I still like it!

I put 10 bags in and now as he is a really dirty horse, it has really swollen up but not dirty - amazing!

My only complaint is that when he lays down and the bed is damp, it sticks to all the rugs and head but baring in mind it is soooo much cheaper, I think it is worth it.
 
Thanks for the tip will try that next order (assuming I can get to grips with them)!!!.............Mind you can't really afford not to as even the chopped straw is costing me £15 per week in bedding!!!

no no you wont need 10 x 15kg sacks !!!!!!!!!!!!

I started all mine with 8 x 10kg sacks then added a new bag 3 days after 5 days after and 7 days after - if you put to much in the bed becomes massive and horrible colour !!!
 
You will need a step ladder with ten bags!!! I started mine with existing banks and used 4 bags to make a good half bed on top of mats.

ITs amazing how big they are in a week !!

I did have a lovely PM from DWI who suggested 5 bags, but just didn't sound enough to me..............but I am slowly being convinced!!!

I think LWP run out of 10kg bags at mo.

I put 6 bags down to start new 12x12. 3 down and water, leave for a bit, 3 more down and water
