Tally so far I think is two broken wrists, dislocated shoulder and concussion and a collarbone!

Yep, also a Patey although inherited via my great aunt. Have never worn it hunting (parents won't allow it and as I live under their roof..) - worn it to show occasionally and got a few looks...but hey, who wants to be conformist? I had a green velvet Charles Owen riding hat I hunted in...was instantly recognizable and know to everyone as the lady in the green hat on the rocking horse. (naughty schooler who dis mini rear/buck things when standing) ... got more compliments than put downs

Was seriously peed off when some tosser nicked it!

there is no way one of these will come off without a strap.

I'm sorry but I cannot believe that.

Years ago (maybe 20) a friend of mine had a made to measure hat. It appeared to fit very firmly and whatever she did it did not come off (ie shaking her head about etc). However, one day she was hacking, just walking along a lane, and her horses hoof slipped on the tarmac and he almost went down, she fell off and as she hit the road, her hat flew off and her head smashed onto the road.

She was in intensive care in London for 6 months and had to have major brain surgery. After that she had to stay home to recuperate for a year.

She was never allowed to ride again and never allowed to go to clubs or discos or anywhere where there would be loud noise, strobe lights etc.

It was very sad as she was still at school at the time but was about to leave and join her sister running their riding school.

I'm happy to say that she recovered well, got an office job, got married and had 3 children (all by ceasarean because of pressure of 'pushing').

Ok so this was at least 20 years ago, but having watched this friend through her recovery I would never trust a hat without a strap to stay on in extreme circumstances.

Whilst I absolutely understand people's concerns about wearing a Patey (yes I will name the brand as I absolutely mean made to measure and not off the peg), there are many people who ride in hats that do not fit that would cause way more damage to themselves if they came off. As I have said before, I am not 100% confident in my GPA as they don't seem to fit ANYONE snugly. I have had one very bad fall in my life - horse and I fell over, I was kicked in the back of the head (wearing a hat, back in around '93) and I was unconcious - I could have died because the hat came off and the chinstrap was choking me - luckily I was found very quickly.

I must say that compared to the hats we all learnt to ride in (elastic chinstraps anyone

) a Patey is not a bad bet.

Although a Patey is not made of the safety materials that the BS hats are (so even if you purchase a Patey with a strap, you are not wearing a proper hat) they ARE made so that they grip your head. A normal Charles Owen beagler (such as I wear when I go strapless) will fall off if I hung upside down on children's play equipment. A properly fitted made to measure Patey would be firmly in place no matter what you did. I hasten to add that I don't tend to hang upside down on children's play apparatus wearing a riding hat, but it was the only description I could think of.

But the most important thing is that the material the Patey is made from is not safety standard material and will not afford you the same protection as a properly fitted GPA.
