How dodgy are they? Talking about the one coming up Easter weekend, not a breed specific sale. Friend who is experienced but not local but staying in the area over Easter is looking for a project pony/field companion. She’s trying to convince me to come with her but I can just see myself coming home with a ragged foal pity buy that costs a bomb in vet fees.

I mean, there will be some horses tied up without access to food/water, some scraggly young things (although perhaps not as young as the Welshies you see at Brecon), and probably some big horses on the skinnier side given the cost of hay over the winter. But the overall standard wasn’t as bad as I was expecting when I went - I didn’t have an overwhelming urge to buy something, and I’m pretty sentimental.

I might go with her then- I had visions of returning with a bedraggled welsh A foal in the back seat.

I just always wonder why you’d enter them in sales when those types get queues of buyers for them! I guess uber fussy vettings may put sellers off
No 3 dozen messages "prce and higt pls" when they're in the advert.
No 3 dozen "is it suitable for a novice" when you said it isn't
No "need to view at exactly 7.34 on Tuesday" then no-show
No brought 6 cousins with me because we all want a free ride- then actually we don't want a grey and yours is too tall.
No agreed to buy then ghost you.

I think time wasters are the biggest reason why nice horses are entered in sales. You're guaranteed a sale provided you accept the highest price offered and don't think too hard about who the buyer is. Of course, dodgy sellers will also enter troubled/injured/not as described horses in the sales and you have to have your wits about you to suss them out. In my opinion, something that looks perfect but that is clearly stated as being off warranty or sold as seen would put me off bidding as these statements mean the 48 hours offered by the market to get the horse vetted and have a right of return are negated.

This!!! I can really see why the sales are appealing 🤦🏻‍♀️ Sales livery too!!

There have been some lovely ones go through Brecon recently too!

We took a cob made to Brecon a few years ago simply for a hassle free sale. She was green but straightforward, 14 and a nice sort. She had a lovely day out and seemed nice people.

After selling my big lad last year, offering all the viewings, month long trials (he went on two, came back from both for things on the advert and discussed in length. First Lady was great second lovely but very frustrating. 😭) trying to be overly honest if anything. The third home, a riding centre had him no trial no fuss but the idea of sales became very appealing and I probably would have made a lot more money in an open ring. I wanted to know where be was etc but God I got 100s of messages, thought I’d answered every possible question on the ad, and people still came up with more, or just didn’t read and messaged “info.” 🤪😬 I thought I was going crazy.

I considered going for a nosey tomorrow but I’m gonna keep any eye on the prices as I could do with a companion/project, and something quite poor would have a great time as I’ve got nearly knee high grass already 😂😂 thought about a little some thing to buy and sell but I don’t think I can face it again!!

It's finished already - seemed to fly by. I had a quick scan through the Marteye link (you can watch the sale back after it's done) and some of the ridden Connie types and the coloured cobs went for £3k+ but it didn't seem to be a good day to be a yearling or a thoroughbred as they either made very poor money or didn't sell.

I just saw the mare on market watch. What a bloody shame. But people have no shame. Breaks my heart but I can’t have a mare. 😭 Can’t see the prices on the link but I may be being thick.

Remember that anything bought from these type of sales is “sold/bought as seen” no comeback, no vetting unless it is clearly stated in terms of sale….personally after attending the likes of Beeston sales years ago I cannot even watch the live link…..

Not everything is sold as seen - the auctioneer made a big deal at the start of the sale of the fact that the majority of lots are warranted until 11am on Tuesday should they prove not to be as described at point of sale. @4Hoofed if you click the > button until you get to the lots you're interested in you can see the prices displayed on screen (or listen to the auctioneer and wait for the fall of the hammer).

Thank you for putting into such excellent words exactly the numpties out there 😂 😂😂 (Apologies to all the genuine buyers out there)

I think anyone buying from sales needs to be ready to handle all the possibilities of what they might get, I actually spoke to someone at Brecon who was looking at the cob I took for someone and she was after a pony for the grand kids. I explained what green ment, we shook hands and despite her being a pretty mare she didn’t bid.

It’s the same as private sales. Some people will be dishonest and you get what you see on the day. McCartney’s are good in terms of warranty, which is more than what you get with a dodgy private sale. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a youngster from sales, but equally I wouldn’t spend much 😬

I actually had a little ride on a lovely mare at Brecon, I wasn’t buying but she seemed straightforward and as described. There’s some old school folks who just do business that way. I just feel sorry for the welfare cases or the clear problem horses who land there. Or older ones who should have been pts at home. 😭

I was struck by how little the thoroughbreds went for. Didn’t go in the end but watched on live stream.

There was a beautiful Irish draft mare who went for about 5k- an absolute bargain if she was as advertised (one of the straight off the boat ones)

This was a few years ago and she was too straight off the boat! I think there’s always a few absolute diamonds at the sales if you’re willing to take a chance!
