how big is an area 900 square yards.is it about 1/4 of an acre or less.we are keen to buy a small flat area for schooling at the back of our house, but no good at maths.

It's under 1/4 acre. It's actually 0.186 of an acre, which is less than 1/5 of an acre.

I assume you are looking at a 20m x 40m school? I would try and work in metres rather than yards, so:

800 square metres is 0.197 of an acre, so again less than 1/5 of an acre. If you can get 1/4 acre you will have plenty of room.
