Wormer in an apple?

To reduce the risk of our pony spitting the Eqvalan Duo wormer out, battling with the syringe, stamping on my feet etc etc. Is there any reason why I couldn't take a small apple, cut it in half, hollow the centre out slightly, fill it with the wormer, put it back together then feed it to him?

He will obviously get all of the wormer, with a limited risk of loss but I wanted to check that giving it with a small amount of food won't reduce its affects?
 
you might still have problems getting him to eat it, mine would spit the lot out once they realised the trick!
Some people seem to rate those easywormer thingys, might be worth looking into if you really have problems with the syringe. It's usually about technique and patience though, my oldie will hold it in her mouth for ages but will eventually swallow if I don't walk away too soon.
 
Giving in an apple is ok. Another trick is mixing the wormer with fine crumbs of Ginger Biscuits. And you can stuff that mixture into an apple too.

I wouldn't put it in an apple it will just be spat out, put a bridle on when you syringe anything I find difficult horses are much better using this method, get someone to help you hold her head slightly up and just slide the wormer in where the bit sits, my friends mare can be awkward to worm but is much easier when she has her bridle on.
 
It won't reduce its effects if he actually eats it.

Mine won't touch an apple anymore in case I've tried to hide something in it.

Personally I would make sure they've not got anything already in their mouth of and then shove it in quickly, try holding head up for a bit and rub neck afterwards. Then once you think they've swallowed it let go.
 
I tried this trick one time with a very nervous mare. She took the apple as she normally would, noticed the wormer, spat it out while also spinning on one leg and hoofing it to the other side of the field while I lay flat on the floor covered in wormer. Wouldn't take an apple off me after that lol
