I shall be picking up a youngster on sunday and will be putting him on a worming programme, my question is I plan to start him on a 5 day panacur guard and a tape wormer on the 6 day as this seems to be the usual advice. I bought the wormers today explaining what they were for they agreed and I went home happy knowing that the youngster will have a good start with me.
However my friend has also bought a youngster from the same place, she planned to do the same, she sent her daughter to buy her wormers but went to a different shop and they looked at her like an idiot and said do you want to kill him or what ! She felt a bit of a fool and walked out. so what would be your plan of action. Both youngsters are not grossly underweight, but do look a tad wormy I would much prefer to feeding the youngsters than feeding worms. So who is right, I have always started new horses with this worming plan.

I'd go with the 1st bit of advice - have bought many youngsters in the past and have always done 5day followed by tape on day 6 - even my vet agrees!! haven't killed one yet - despite having plenty of worms chucked out in the poo!!!

I would suggest that the person in the second shop may need to brush up on their knowledge somewhat...............

You are definitely right! The idea of the panacur 5 day guard is that it acts more gently that the 'modern' wormers over a period of time, rather than causing a mass evacuation. It is the one to use if you don't know the worming history of a horse. The SQP that spoke to your friend definitely needs to brush up a bit as SJcrazee said!

Thanks for that I have always done this on new horses, its what my vet advised me to do years ago. Then I started to doubt my knowledge and thought maybe it was me with outdated worming info. This youngster is a bit poor but not dull, bit of a pot belly so believed I was doing the right thing. Thanks guys

Do you know the previous worming history of the youngster? Personally I'd do a worm count so you know what you are dealing with. And would worm for tape anyway as a precaution.

Echo this !!!! however if you can see he has a heavy burden, I would not give the 2nd wormer on the 6th day. Give him a week to recover then do it

I'd do a worm count and speak to your vet.

I know someone who had one horse die and her other had to have emergency surgery after using the five day wormers, so I avoid them like the plague.

What did the horse die of, a mass evacuation of worms that caused colic or a reaction to the wormer ? Surely either could happen to any horse using any wormer, either way this horse will need worming. I have spoken to my vet and he has advised 5 day for all new horses on my land, especially if I do not know their previous worming programmes.
