I don't know if this has already been asked but this is my first time breeding and I want to do the right thing for my mare....We usually worm count our mares and if there are any worms we worm appropriately....However, people are now saying I should worm my mare who is due in May regardless of the worm count so when the little one is born it has wormer in its system already? If this is correct when would I worm her and what wormers are safe? Any advise would be great

I was advised to worm 6 weeks before the birth and that is what I do. I normally worm strategically for time of year but before birth use a broader spectrum wormer e.g. equimax.

See Andy Pandy's post of post partum worming of mare to prevent scours in foal.

hope you have a lovely foal.

The internet wormer sales sites are usually very good at advising on types of wormer suitable for mares in foals. I was advised not to use Pramox on mine and I know other mare owners who have had in foal mares get colicky with Panacur Equine Guard.

Thank you for the advice! Would you worm now then worm 6 weeks before? I really don't want to overworm her but then I don't want to harm the foal in anyway, I'll read the post by Andy Pandy as well for some more tips!

I know Equest and Equilavan is OK for infoal mares. It does tell you on the box. With Equalvan (I am nearly sure) you can worm foals with. Equest you can't worm the foal until it is 6 months old (but is OK when the mare is in foal) which is an error I made but no ill effects given the big bruiser of a foal I had.

Hi

I have wormed my girls today and intend to worm them again a week before foalie is due.

Most are safe for in-foal mares apart from a couple but they should say in the data information if it is safe.

Hope this helps

I have had this exact discussion with Wormers-direct today

my mare is due end of May I was advised to worm her 2 weeks before due date then worm both mare and foal 4-6 weeks after that....she's mentioned which to use before foaling but I can't reemember its on my calendar at work

I think it was equest or equimax....but wormers direct are very helpful

Thank you so much! Think I'll worm her as usual in March for Tapeworm then worm again before due date. Looking forward to the little one arriving and seeing pics of everyone else's bundle of joys!
