As above really! We havent got a yard worming program, but obviously everything is expected to be wormed upto date. I need to do my mare, and have followed the Equest plan before, but what does everyone else use and when?

I use ivermectin once in the summer, then will prob do equimax end of september, equest at christmas then equimax again end of march.

I don't worm any more than one dose in the middle of summer as mum is an avid daily poo picker!

I use Equest programme too, but ive pretty much used it since I got my horse 4 years ago

so im thinking I might change! However when I did parasitology at uni I think I remember them saying that it was the population as a whole that became resistant to a particular drug not just the parasites in one horse?! Therefore just me changing from equest to a different drug based brand is not going to make a difference as the immunity would be widespread... hence why people dont so much use eqvalan anymore because parasites have built up resistance to the active ingredient.
I think thats it anyway, i was usually in my lectures with a hangover and 2 hrs sleep so I could have been a bit hazy!

Oh just looked on the internet and it says the drug in eqvalan (ivermectin) has no know resistance, hmmmm.

Theres no point changing programmes anyway unless the active ingedient is different so check

I'm using Pyratape P this year having used Equest/Pramox previously.

You cannot use pyratape p all year round

Firstly there is resistance reported for its active ingredient (pyrantel)
it will also not cover you horse for bots or encysted redworm.

My yard has a worming 'plan' but it's somewhat ropey so I tend to suit myself a bit. I'm using Equest/Pramox this year because it is so easy, but I usually do a worm count from time to time as well, and the land is cross grazed with sheep.

When the rest of the yard had a single dose Panacur

last month, my mare had Equest. She will have Pramox in the autumn.

Whatever you use buy it online from Australia! It is MASSIVELY cheaper even if you include paying for the importation. Check the chemicals you want and buy what includes the right chemical, no matter what its brand name in Oz is. I have Eqvalan Duo (ivermectin/praziwuantel) equivalent at less than £6 per 600kg horse, including shipping charges.

It is the benzimidazole drugs that there is widespread resistance to - Panacur is the main one.

i was on the equest equest promox worming plan winter equest spring promox summer equest autum promox. But all i do now is worm with promox autum and spring and poo count the rest of the year!

I worm count then blood test for tapeworm and worm for encysted redworm once a year (assuming everything comes back clear that is - which it has!).

I am avoiding chemicals as much as possible due to the ulcer issue as I can't imagine they help....

treat for encysted redworm in the winter,

they become encysted in the autumn and if untreated will all emerge together late winter early spring causing damage to the gut, colic etc.

If you are treating throughout the year and poo picking etc you should have less of a problem

you need to treat with either panacur 5-day guard (fenbendazole) or moxidectin (equest).

If you are using equest/pramox cycle. you would:

treat in december with equest (this does the red worms which may have encysted in the autumn before they emerge in the early spring)

then treat with pramox March, Equest in June, Pramox in september then equest in december again.

edited to say the december equest is the important one for the encysted red worm.

well i usually worm middle to late november with promox and promox in late april and poo count the rst would they be covered for everything? the poo counts always come back clear!x
