He has come in tonight with a wound above his back fetlock joint
frown.gif
Its only small but has bled..Its slightly swollen around it...cant tell if theres heat as he wont let me anywhere near him...have managed to spray a bit of iodine on it and thats about it....now my worry is *apart from the cut* he has'nt started his injection programme yet booked in for the end of the month...so what do I do?? I just feel worried that I will go up tomorrow to a ballooned leg or a tetanus infected foal
crazy.gif
..also would he be better out in the snow keeping it clean or in his stable...just wont let me near it

sorry I'm rambling now..

if your foal hasn't been vaccinated and is more than a few weeks old I would get the vet as he will need an anti tetanus toxin jab asap. Far better to keep it covered and keep him out in the snow if that is what he is used to.Keeping him in will just add to the likelihood of an infection setting in if it is left uncovered.

Similar thing happened to my foalio on his back leg! We hadnt even got to stage of stroking him yet. This was before he was tetanused too. Got the vet out and get gave him a shot of tetanus and left us with some potions to clean it with/antibiotics. I used a whip as an extended arm with cotton wool on the end and managed to clean it this way. That particular leg is known as his 'dangerous leg'

He's six and a half months old...and was due to start jab programme at the end of the month so he will then fall in with my others...He had a tet jab when he was born but dont know how much cover that will give him

If it was me I'd be keeping an eye on it and waiting til the end of the month so he could fit in with my others, but you cant be too sure, ring the vet up and ask for advice? you never know they might say he is covered with the first jab, but just keep an eye on it for infection, until his next one is due.

They only give anti-toxin at birth - for temporary cover until the foal is old enough to start proper jabs (about 8 weeks!)

I would get vet out in the morning for anti-toxin to cover this injury - and get proper 2 jab course scheduled fast! Tetanus doesn't wait!! And a weanlingwith tetanus is a dead weanling!

First Tet is only to cover until some imunity is passed over from the mare - can start 'prper' tet course at around 5 months. This time mine had 1 at 5 months and 1 at 6 months and they are now covered for tet for 3 whole years!!

I wouldn't risk not having him tet covered as by the time they show symptoms it is normally too late.

Hope he recovers quickly!

Yeah I agree with the others and get the tet done just now. I know its a hassle if its then out of line with the other but to be honest tetanus is such a hideous condition its just not worth the risk.

Get the vet out ASAP!!!

At the very least the wound needs cleaning THOROUGHLY for which he may need to be sedated for the purpose of making the experience as pleasant for him as possible - you don't want him learning that vets or indeed people mean stress, pain and panic so I'd rather make him a bit sleepy for it than have him endure the above...

you also want him jabbed for tet...

Sorry for my OP I was going on with myself....It was never my intention to keep his appointment for the end of the month
shocked.gif
it was more to the fact that I hoped he would be alright overnight!!! having not had his tet's...and to wether he should be in or out *stable with all sorts of bacteria or out in the snow keeping relatively clean

Sorry for any confusion

Did the vet say to try and clean the wound or to leave it?
