Thanks to those who commented on my 'Meet Taylah' thread. I was wondering if anyone had had a horse that was around 14.2 hh at age 2 and a half that made 15.2? She is 2 years 6 months and measures 14.2 and is not particularly bum high. Also her cannon bones are pretty short and look about 'adult proportion' so I'm now feeling a bit worried that she won't grow much more. Her sire is 16.1 German WB and dam is 15.3 TB. I am 5' 10" and prefer smaller horses but don't want to look huge on her!

I have a Connie, he was about the same size at her age, he made 15.2, make sure she gets the right nutrients and let her grow naturaly, she probably will make 15.2 but you will just have to wait and see. Re bum high or not, my lad grew in spurts, and a lot of the time was not bum high, but still grew.

Don't panic!!! There is no reason for her not to make the height you want, all she needs is time. Relax and enjoy your baby

Lol, I am a worrier. I've done far too much googling I think. I have been bringing her in every night but have decided to leave her out now. And just bring her in every other day for a feed and a groom. Will feed her in the field with the others the rest of the time. Give her chance to mature.

my boy was 15'2 at her age and he's now 16'1 and bum high, so im sure that she will grow more over the next couple of years!!

plus they do level out and then one day you will look at her and notice she is bum high again!! so don't panic!!

my boys sire is 14'2 and dam was 15'3, so you're mares got more of a chance of getting bigger than my boy did!

and if all else fails feed her Fast fibre and molasses free hifi, im sure that must be whats made my boy get so big!!!

There really is no point worrying about it, she will either make the height or she won't. You won't know for sure until she's older no matter how much you deliberate over it.

She's only 2 she's got plenty of years of growth left in her I'm sure she will make the height being 14.2 already.

That is reassuring. Thank you. I have been looking back at her sires lines and his sire was 16.2 and grandsire 17 hh. Trouble is on the dam side there is no info at all regarding height. Why don't they record the height of many racing stallions? Obviously not thought important I suppose.

Blimey, he has grown big considering the height of his parents!

Yes, worrying about it won't make any difference. I plan to keep her in any case. I guess I am worried more because I don't sell my horses on. Get far too attached. The stud told me she was 15hh already. I must admit I was surprised as she didn't look it. But accepted it as they said they had measured her. When I got her home I sticked her at 14.2 :o

my current mare is 15.2...her mum was a 14.2 pony and dad was 16 h warmblood., her full brother who was a year younger was stockier and made 15h..........previous mare was 16 h. at 6 years and was 13.3 at 1yr 3mths...her mum was 15.1 and dad was 16h.

sounds like your has a good chance of getting to 15.2....she is very pretty.., good luck

I wouldn't worry too much. WB can take years to mature fully, I've known some not to stop growing untill 7/8 years old! Just make sure she gets plentiful nutrients and forage and you shouldnt have a problem :) enojoy her

Thank you. Her head's a lot finer than it looks, she has a really substantial 'beard'!

Had a TB, he was 14.1 had 2 years, he made 16.3

Gosh! Bet that was a shock.

I've just been out to the field, and actually, using the poo scooper as a measure, her cannon bones are hardly any shorter than my TB geldings and he's 16.1 with 9 inches of bone. I'm going to have to stop worrying I think and just be patient.

I am feeding her a stud balancer and ad lib haylage so hopefully she will be okay. Unfortunately she decided not to eat any more feed with the panacur equine guard in it. She had 3 days dosage and then refused to eat the 4th and fifth. I'm hoping it has done its job in just the three doses. All the others ate theirs no problem. She was the one that needed it the most too.

It's pot luck I'm afraid, my TB mare was about 15.2, her first stallion was 16.1, I sold the foal at 3yrs and 15.2 thinking he was not going to be big enough and he ended up over 17 hands, stallion no. two was 17 hands, resulting foal was born at about 14 hands! and ended up over 17 hands as a two year old, foal three was by a traditional 13.2hh and was 16 hands as a three year old! Good food and warmth and she'll grow I'm sure, she looks to be growing nicely level rather than either up&skinny or out&short!

I would be very surprised if she doesn't make 15.2hh. I also wouldn't put much stock in the bum-high thing, that's often indicative of draftx type horses. All of my WB youngsters grow evenly, which is what I like to see tbh. Anyhow it's moot if you are going to keep her regardless.

Thanks. As of today she is living out. She was coming in at night just because I was worried about her injuring herself. But I can't wrap her in cotton wool. I know turnout 24/7 is better for joints, but not sure about growth?

I bought a 15hh irish x tb at 2nhalf, was sold to me as the previous owners were told he`d make 16 n they really thought he wouldn`t make the height. I wanted no bigger than 15.2....... yes you`ve guessed it , he made 16hh!! I also bought a "little"15.2 4yrs old warmblood.......see above !!! made 16.1 ha ha. wb`s grow for a long time. good luck with your mare she`s beautifull.

Thank you. I guess you never can tell, although I would expect something that is over 15hh at 2 1/2 to make 16hh. Everything says my filly should make 15.2 except that she is so small right now.

As long as she's being fed accordingly, no reason why she shouldn't.

When I used to show rabbits I had a really good one, trouble was it wouldn't eat much. I was starting to despair at four months old, as it didnt look like it was going to make the size needed by the breed standard.

Went to the pet shop, got samples of all their feeds. Found one it liked, fed that to her whilst she was still growing, hey presto she grew to the right size.

She was on the slightly smaller side of the weight scale, but she was no runt.

I agree, plus there is also wb in her, let her take her time, I'm sure she will get there, she isn't particularly bum high at the mo but she will have another growth spurt or two or four, she still looks like a gangly baby in many ways so I reckon there's some decent growing into that body left yet. Plus, I'm sure on the other thread you said she hadn't been packed full of 'growing food' that's good, her bodied just taking its time to get where it needs to be.

P.S. I lub her and I'm 5.6, so can take her off your hands if she makes 15hh and she can come and live with Ben and I :D x

Think I said before, my WB was 14.2 in the November of her 2nd year. My aunt sold her to me cheap because she thought she wouldn't make the height. She's now 16.1.

Was that when she was rising two or rising 3? I would love it if she could get to 16 hh, but 15.2 would do.

Haha. I often wish I was smaller. I just love ponies. But at 5' 10 and ten stone, 15.2 is about the smallest I look okay on, though some would say I was a little big.

I really can't imagine that she wont make 15.2..!!! I dont pay alot of attention to bum height etc. My lad is "supposedly" a WB x ISH...he grows pretty evenly. Last winter he was 15.3hh in a 6ft 3 rug but this year he is in a 6ft 9 rug and enormous..!!!! :eek3:
I am 5ft 11" and like my horses bigger the better to be honest and I was really worried my boy would be too small as he didn't seem to be growing much...be careful what you wish for :D

My 4 year old is 16hh now she was barely 15 hh as a 2 year old & looked a lot more mature than yours so id say yours will easily make 15.2 :) mine still looks like she has a bit more growing to do

I had a two yr old that was 14 hh, on his vaccination certificate his estimated adult height by the vet was 14.2. He grew to seventeen hands

I'm reading this and I might have the opposite problem, mine measured 14 wither and 14.2 bum today and he's 8 mths. I'm hoping for 15.3 - 16 which I think I'll have but I hope he stops growing and doesnt grow too big as in 17h. Only time will tell and what will be will be because mines here to stay :-)

Thanks everyone. I feel a bit better now. I haven't been helped much by having a 20 month old in the field with her that is already 16.1! His owner is only 5'5" so we have the opposite problem to each other, except that she really likes big horses and so I think she is secretly pleased!
