Yesterday we were taking math to the last show of the season at our riding club.He was acting up abit in the morning but thought he was just a little fresh.
well at 1st he wouldnt load then he finally decided to go in and stood and munched his haynet while the other pony was loaded and we left the yard about 10mins into the journey he started kicking out in the box so we pulled over and i checked incase he boot had slipped or anything but he was fine and he somtimes does have a little kick but not all the time so this carried on about 15mins later and as we pulled into the showground our friends who were driving behind told us on the corner his bum went down and when we got him off he had ripped one of his travel boots off and also had cut his back leg in the processes nothing deep though just took the skin of so we put some cream on and he was also very lame so he didnt do anyshowing instead i kept him walking while the others did there show.We were very worried he wouldnt go back in the trailer but this time he dragged me back in we put his boots on and used a bandage instead of the broken travel boot incase he stood on himself again.
but on the way home he was even worse we had to keep pulling over to make sure he hadnt gone down.eventually about 5mins from home i decided to be very stupid and get in the box and see what was going on and he did what i can only descibe as try to get down he was leaning onto the side of the trailer and his back legs were going down but then he got back up when we got him of the trailer ( me a wreck as i thought he was colicing) he just calmly walked to his stable and ate his hay.

I just dont know what he was doing and know im worried about taking him out again when hes come sound completly.
Hes normaly the most amazing horse to box he never shouts has a odd kick but will stand in for ages and he normaly loads himself.
My dad drives slow when towing as you should do so i dont think he could be unsteady
Our trailer is a Ifor Williams 510? (the small one)
Could anyone have any ideas ? should i get the vet as it crossed my mind he could have some head trauma and cause him to do this.
its really knocked me seeing him do this.
Hes pretty much sound already just keeping him in a sick paddock with my other horse so he doesnt run around so much.but when he is sound were going to load him and take him up the road and back see what he does and then if hes fine increase the journey , this sound like a good idea?
sorry for the masssive post but i dont know what to do =/
Big fat chocolate cake if you read all this :) x

Have the brakes checked on the trailor, they may not be acting equally and therefore causing him to become unbalanced - nothing to do with your dad's driving.
Some of our friends had a problem and the only way they coud overcome it was be travelling one horse on it's own or by travelling the second one facing backwards - hardly ideal. Now they have a new treilor and can travel both of the same horses correctly.

My horse does this in any trailer, it is bloody frightening isn't it? She never used to and then one day she did.

We've found she's slightly better without boots (apart from over reach and tendon/sport boots) and we're going to try her with a single breast bar which we hope will help her be more comfortable

This probably won't help you work out what is wrong with your lad, but my girl was doing something very similar. I've only had her for 10 months and only recently started travelling with her.

We loaded her into our Ifor 505 (the small one) on the right hand side. It sounded like she was kicking hell out of the trailer, especially around left hand bends - no matter how slow OH drove. She was trashing a pair of back travel boots on each journey.

Like you I finally got into the trailer to see what on earth was going on. She was leaning on the centre partition and scuffing her right hand legs up the wall whilst going almost down - so she was ending up 45 degrees.

A friend of mine put travel bandages on her for the return journey and we loaded her into the left hand side. Because we changed 2 things at once we don't know what the problem was, more likely to be the side she was loaded as she had the problem on her very first journey when she was wearing no boots.

Anyway, since changing sides and using bandages, she travels like a pro.

Hope you manage to get it sorted, I know how horrible and upsetting it is to see them flailing around in the trailer for no apparent reason.

Hi, I have had 2 horses do this. It is very frightening. Unfortunately he is likely to do this everytime you travel him like that in a trailer. Both our horses travel fine in a lorry but when we put them in the trailer they have to have the middle partition out. We have an ifor williams and have found out that we can keep the middle partition in but the back half of it has to be tied to one side so they can spread their back legs. It seems to be that if they don't have enough room for the their back legs then they can't balance and fall over. They both travel fine like that but just a pain they can only travel alone.

we had a 505 and my boy kicked the side out of it:eek: he couldnt balance once trailer was fixed we got a full breast and tail bar and tried him again, he stood with his head at the left side of trailer and bum in the right corner and was fine, he was never happy but would travel ok
now got a lorry but i am thinking on going back to a trailer for cost reasons but keep thinking about him kicking the side out of the last one:confused:
hope you manage to get something sorted withh your horse
