Would this be big enough for a 13/13.1 to go in at night?

I really wouldn't like to see a pony in that. Ideally you need something at least 10 x 10 you give the pony enough room to move around. Sorry, but it's a garden shed and not a stable, the structure won't be strong enough to house a pony!
 
Too small - width by length is the biggest issue. Suspect you need 12x12 at a minimum. Although you could put up a windbreaker wall for shelter if there isn't any in the field.
 
I personally would want a pony in a 10x10 stable at least and wouldn't put a pony/horse in anything that wasn't purpose built for equine use.

12 x 12 is ok for big horses - FEI minimum specs for 3DE stabling is 10 x 10!

8 x 6 though is just too small for a 13hh.

Any pony rolling or laying against that would go straight through the sides.
You would have to remove the floor which would mean the damp/water from the ground would rot the wood in nano seconds.
It is also not big enough and an accident waiting to happen.

I am shocked at this? Is this for real?
 
Does the pony even need to come in at all? Like someone else suggested you could build a wall in a L or cross shape, which would give plenty of shelter and cheaper than stable, or shelter.

I'm pretty sure I stated I was not experienced, and it could sound silly. So therefore dishing offence and making me feel as if I shouldn't have posted this question isn't what I posted a question for? I asked this, I am not prepared to purchase any sort of shelter without getting advice.
 
Our chicken shed is 8x6, it is pretty small and I don't think a pony would have enough space to turn round etc - would be very tight. The bigger you can get the better, have you thought about getting one much larger than you need and then sectioning part off for storing hay/feed etc?
 
no, structure wont be strong enough, its not tall enough at the eaves and doorway wont be wide enough either. so you need something designed for horses/ponies not garden tools

10x10 or bigger is ideal, but if only in occasionally some are ok in 8x10, personally i would not bring in i would buy a decent rug and leavepony out

Calm down, the other poster looks siller than you do because she hasn't read the question properly!

The cheapest sort of shelter you could get would be to get four decent sized posts, get someone to help you knock them into the ground one in the middle and three round the sides and then firmly fix waterproofed ply
to make a three pointed star. Then she'd have shelter from any direction and can choose whether to shelter or not depending on how she feels.
 
Is the problem your field doesn't have any shelter? Is there natural shelter in the field? The shed is not big enough, nor tough enough to house a pony. If all you need is a wind-break in the field, and cost is an issue, then put up some fence panels in a U shape.

We were planning to do that, but we cannot find any suitable poles which would be big enough etc. on ebay that are near us, and most of them are collection? Any idea's where I could purchase telegraph poles from?
 
Hmmm, I just but field shelters into ebay and got that. What's your budget roughly? Could find you a 10x 10 for around £700, it looks to be the going rate, and properly built for horses too. The beauty of them is that they are on 'runners' so can be towed, so don't need planning permission most of the time. Paint it and look after it and they sell well second hand.
Look on preloved etc and locally for 2nd hand field shelters. Some people on here might even be able to help.

I am planning for shelter, or stable. No shelter where she is.

Deciding I'm going to keep her out, i've asked around for telegraph poles, so when I get them, we shall then think about building a shelter.

8 x 6" posts would be plenty strong enough:) Most timber merchants would have those, you want about 8' long, sunk 3' into the ground.

I think before you even think of buying a shelter, you think about getting her some company. I am assuming the poor thing is going to be on her own? :(

I am silly? I read the question thank you, but anyone with the experience to have a pony would also have the common sense to house it properly?

If you do not have the sense or experience to know how to house a pony then what experience do you have in the general care and attention a pony needs?

I have indeed used a garden shed similar for a pony, but a shed that was 10 x 8 for a 12.2.
We put down heavy duty paving slabs (think council type ones) & bedded them in on sand.
Then put up the shed (without floor).
We then had to put kick boards round the sides to prevent pony from falling through the thin walls. We utilised the flooring for part of this.
Then the windows..... not safe at all unless acrylic & that doesn't last more than a couple of years before being weakened by the sun & then it becomes brittle.

This was in my mums back garden & purely used for a small pony who qualified for HOYS & Olympia over a few years - kept her fit from the commuting a mile each way to the yard for grazing every day :)
