Would you be upset...?

Probably not 'upset' but I would certainly be asking them why! I have known genuine mix ups take place (normally with rugs and on livery yards) but am assuming it's not that in this situation.

I wouldn’t be upset!! Is that the word you meant to use??

I don’t really understand why people get all projective over their things. People at our yard get all upset if people use their wheelbarrow, they also seem to think that because they have their own wheelbarrow then it somehow makes them better horse people.. I mean wtf??

Wouldn’t be too bothered if someone needed to borrow my stuff tbh.

I would be kind of angry and ask why, I have almost out some one else bridle on my own horse once, until I looked at it and looked at his head and noticed it was WAY to small and popped it back were It belong, also told the lady who's horse it belonged to, she didnt mind as she said she had picked up mine before, but if the stuff was on the horse and it was clearly yours, I would just ask her why it was on her horse, as much as I would want to scream and shout at the person it gets you no were

Hmm, I'm not sure to be honest... It all depends on the people and the yard I think...

We're all really close on our yard and I've told my stable neighbours that they can borrow anything they like, when they like, so therefore, I don't think I'd be bothered at all (not that anyone would take anything without confirming first, as neither would I!!). If anyone from my yard borrowed something, I don't think I’d mind, we all get on so well, I trust that they would put it back in the condition they found it in :) ...

However....

I have been on a yard before that wasn't like the one I'm at now :o Lots of B****s, and had anyone have taken anything and used it without asking I'd be furious!!

:D

Borrowing implies an 'ask' which is fine. Anyone can borrow our stuff, but taking without asking is plain rude.

It would depend a bit what it is and what the circumstances are......

I have a couple of yard friends who have allowed me to borrow things and who I would return the favour too, and would be happy for them to help themselves but as I say it depends who and what really.

They should ask end of, I would give anyone anything if I can and do anything I can to help, but people should not take and use your things without asking. If they asked them I'm sure I would oblidge, it's the taking without my permission I wouldn't be happy with, as it's something I would never do myself.

One livery was thinking of buying my DR saddle and agreed that she wanted it and went out last night and bought a girth for the saddle. I kindly (or stupidly) agreed she could pay me when she could and we agreed dates for the money. However today I see the saddle on the pony (fine) but on top of one of my matchy saddle pads (my favourite lemon one no less!!). I have just asked her friend/other livery if she said anything when she got it out and they told me she was just 'trying it' (as in the saddle?!) - I am very generous and LEND things all the time, maybe I am the idiot?

"borrow" yes no problem we all need to sometimes. Taking without asking i'd be furious.

And yes I get protective over my stuff, not because I think having it makes me a better horse person but becasue I work dam hard to be able to afford my horse and all that goes with it and I don't expect people to just take my hard earned stuff witout asking. Usually people that don't ask and break or loose your stuff never own up to it either.

I’m quite bad for ransacking my friends box of stuff for things like horsey first aid and shampoo.. in fact I’ve used all the shampoo.. ooops! She doesn’t care, but I’m sure some of you would!

I would be annoyed. Doesn't she have her own saddle pad? I hope she's going to wash it for you, after her horse has sweated in it!

I'm guessing no-one has ever borrowed your saddle to go out for a ride and then managed to let the horse fall over and get stuck on his side (in a river)

Depends what it is, if it is tack or riding hat, I would be really pissed off, if it was boots, numnah, riding jacket then not really an issue providing they cleaned them after use and it wasn't on a regular basis.

Im not cross, just feel a bit like my generosity has been taken advantage of which upsets me and tbh I dont expect her to wash it, but I will make a point of taking it home tonight to wash it myself - They have been on the yard a month so new liveries and there are only 3 of us so its a little more tricky

Oh yes you set yourself up nicely

So if she scratches it before paying for it and then doesn't want it what are you going to do?

I think you need to set the boundaries of what's ok and what's not until money changes hands!

Last time a livery borrowed my things it was a rug, I was asked and I did agree. It came back almost beyond repair. Fortunatly I have a spare but how put out would you be if this happened and you hadn't been asked and agreed?? Especially if it wasn't a spare or a spare was not available.

I think you'll find it's the COST and inconvenience to their horse and themselves of replacing things when they get broken that makes people protective.

Only exception for me is 1st aid stuff if it's an emergency, I would still expect it to be replaced though, assuming it's not MY emergency.

Yes I'd be upset. I don't mind letting people borrow my stuff as long as they ask. There are people who go out and buy equipment that they need and use, then there are others who keep borrowing stuff that they need but dont want to buy.

Is that why they get upset about wheel barrow borrowing? :P

Obviously you'd be a bit peeved if someone wrecked your rug that wasn't a spare, but I do think people are a bit funny about stuff unnessesarily.

Not upset... More like I'd flip!

I'm the most easy going person you will find, but when people dis-respect me, my animals/family or property then I'm sorry but no.

I hope you have a few 'words' with said person.

Just plain rude and cheeky if someone had done that!

Its proberly the fact that they're obviusly decided they will spend their hard earned money for something they want/need and is convient to have, its not then for any tom, dick or harry to just use (ask or get your own) they can still get broken, be left full ect.

I must admit that I am very protective of my stuff. To the point I don't often lend it out. This has come from years of people stealing my stuff or I let them borrow it but either never get it back or it comes back broken and they say 'it was like that when you lent it to me'. When I know full well it wasn't!

Medical kits are a pet hate of mine. It's not cheap stuff and people never replace it. I have mine padlocked. If it is a friend and a total emergancy then I will let them use my stuff. I'm not cold hearted but as other posters have said, I work hard for the money to buy this stuff. Why should I fork out for someone else to use it?

BTW, When I had my tb I was rug mad. He has 15 rugs which cost me around £650-700 to buy. There was NO way anyone was ever using them purely because of how much it would cost to replace them.

Bit of a ball ache if they haven't finished and you need it! (I'm often in a bit of a hurry!) Or their horse backs into and breaks it, or they 'lose the handles' (yes that's happened to me before!!) so you then need to replace handles/barrow.

I don't tend to get peeved about barrows or muck tools if they get put back afterwards but sadly they never do so then I arrive at 6am in the dark and in a hurry with no outdoor lighting, wanting to muck out 4 horses, hay water etc in half hour so I can ride, and spend ages stumbling round in the dark looking for my barrow, out by the muck heap, my fork, in one stable block and my brush god knows where! - Back to inconvennience really.
