Would you buy a horse that does not jump and doesn't travel well?

As per title really, just wondering if anyone would buy a horse that hacks and does some very nice flat work but does not jump, and does not travel in a trailer....? (and only travels sedated in a lorry)?

If so, what would you expect to pay for something like this?

I wouldn't as I want to be able to travel and jump but he would suit someone who just wanted a happy hacker.

As to price I would say no more then £1000 (TBH I wouldn't take him even if he was free) but if he's a safe, sensible hack then someone may be willing to pay more.

Is the travelling issue something that could be sorted?
 
Someone who doesn't want to jump or do shows other than local stuff would probably buy it. The value would be the value of the horse including the issues... Would depend on many other things.. Lots of people just want a happy hacker.
 
Depends what you want to do with it. If you are never going to travel it, or jump it and just want a hacking horse then perhaps it would work out. I woudnt personally buy a horse like this, as I have owned a poor traveller in the past and dont relish the thought of having to sedate an animal to take it anywhere. I also enjoy my jumpies.

Bear in mind also that if you ever wanted to sell it on, you may find nobody wants to buy
 
If he is a very good hack and you only want to hack and school with no need to box anywhere, yes it is worth considering but if you feel that you would like to jump or go out to shows at some time in the near future, no.

Price depends on too many other things so although he may be worth less than a "perfect" horse he may still be perfect for someone and therefore hold his value well.
 
No. Apart from anything else you never know when you might have to travel the horse, and if it doesn't travel, I'm not buying......
 
Yes, it wouldnt bother me, I prefer them to keep most of their hooves on the ground at any given time. The travelling isnt an issue as such, if you have safe hacking routes locally you dont necessarily need to travel the horse, if you ever needed to take him/her to the vets I dont suppose sedating as a one off would be a major problem. Difficult to suggest a price, its what you are prepared to pay to get a good, reliable horse to hack out on, worth a lot in my book, but of course you do limit your market should you ever need to sell on!
 
Not a chance.

Even people that just want to hack may need to travel him for veterinary care or to do the odd sponsored ride.

I would have thought that value would be very low.
 
No but some one might.

Can he not jump for a reason or has he not been taught to jump? as that would make a diffrence to his price but it still wouldnt be much.
 
Depends on if I thought I could change it really. How much would depend on how much/ long to put it right compared to buying one similar that already could. If I couldn't get it out & jumping then not for me personally.
 
Personally No as my horse needs to travel to shows and jump!
However there will be somebody out there who will suit your horse. Not everyone cares about jumping or going to shows and the fact your horse hacks well is a good advantage. Lots of people (most people I know actually although they don't admit it) just like to hack and school at home and don't do a lot else. How much you knock off the price depends how good the horse is in otherways. More than the price I think you need to market the horse at the right home.
 
No. The jumping doesnt bother me as Im not into jumping these days, but I would not have a bad loader or traveller. No way. Had one before and its soul destroying.
Yes, if you just want to hack about locally its one thing, but if you have to move yards/area, or go to the vets (yes you can have sedation in these cases but what a faff), or just want to meet up with friends and hack somewhere not so local, its no good.
 
how old and why doesn't it travel? my big girl won't travel in a trailer, she's too big and apparently had an incident where she reared and hit her head in one years ago, she will travel in a lorry though but i don't have one!
the non jumping thing wouldn't bother me but the traveling could be an issue
 
You've just described MY horse so "YES"!!! :D

I don't jump so it doesn't bother me in the slightest that Jack doesn't and I can't afford a lorry or a trailer so the fact that he has a fear of small spaces and isn't a good traveller doesn't affect our day-to-day life either.

How could I resist this gorgeous creature....? (Who was nabbed for WELL under £1000)

However, what if he needed shipping off to horsepital, don't you worry about your ability to get him there?
 
No, but I do love to jump and go out to parties. Even if I didn't I would like to know that I can go out or pop a log on a hack if I felt like it.
 
Not if I wanted to event or show jump around the country ;)

If I wanted a companion or a quiet hack and it fitted the bill, why not. Most horses can learn to jump to an extent (unless no jumping is medical) and you can normally improve their tolerance to travelling if you have access to a trailer/lorry and infinite patience.
 
If it really jumped but didnt travel well then I would! You can work on travelling
My 4 year old doesnt load, but travels well once on.

Hes turned away for the summer but I am going to work on getting him loading ready for when he starting competing october time.

So it totally depends what you want to do :)
 
No, although I mostly happy hack these days I still like to have the odd pop and I would never buy anything that didn't travel.

As there are (pobably) many reasonably priced horses on the market who will jump and travel, my feeling is this one would have to be pretty darn cheap.
 
Yes, as not keen on jumping myself, and travel issues are very rewarding to work through. Been there with Hippo. Nine months on, she no longer has said issues, though at the time it was...interesting! Moving yards was the day it all really clicked for us: suddenly the trailer wasn't a monster anymore:rolleyes:

Agree that horses often have a surprising ability to learn new things too. Bought Hippo as a happy hacker/occasional dressage beastie. Was told she could not jump. Turns out she has a natural talent for it!

I'd pay £500, more with tack.
 
My old boy was no show jumper ie would pop a pole or puddle if he wanted to out on a hack but never keen. I am a happy hacker. I knew he didnt load well but we did get round it and once he ended up being twitched. Another a bowl of food ! I probably could have loaded him with practice but I am a happy hacker and he was perfect in all other ways ie 200% traffic etc etc. The time I needed to load him was his trip to the vets ...I had two really nice guys(farmers) who got him in with ease they just had a lovely way with him.

So yes I would. I paid £1400 about 10 years ago. Cob.
