If the horse was otherwise perfect in everyway?

What's the story behind the non matching feet? How long have they been shod like this? First impression is to run a mile.

My mare is shod similarly in front but in both feet and specifically to rescue the balance after poor farriery.

Why is there a hind shoe on the front hoof? And is it me or does it look like the hooves were black but someone has sanded off most of the black?

I would want to know why he's shod like that and why is one foot squared off. Is the farrier doing it or is the horse dragging it and doing it himself.

I'd get my farrier (who's opinion I trust) to look and speak directly to the current farrier to understand what's going on.

Would he pass a vetting with it and if not would that be a big deal?

My laminitic mare was always shod with back shoes on the front as farrier thought she would be more comfortable that way and she was. Get a farrier you trust to take a look. No truer statement than "No hoof, no horse".

Story:

She had an access which blew out at the bottom of the foot and took a chunk out- it's hard to tell from the side photo but that's what I was trying to show (mud isn't helping) she has a bar shoe on now to support the foot. Horse is sound.

It rang alarm bells with me, why is the foot so boxy for a start? Bad farriery? Horse isn't up for cheap either!

I'm assuming pretty much a few months as it happened in June.

From the side view it almost looks like a club foot. I would probably get my farrier to look at it and hear the story if I loved it in every other way.

Never seen this before - I would imagine the rolled toe on one front shoe only is because the horse drags one toe or something - not a good sign! Would get the vet to check it out though before making any decisions!

Im another who would want to talk to thier farrier and then mine. Would need to know history. has horse been vetted? Ifso what did vet say. with history and my farriers thoughts then i would make decision.

My mare was barefoot but trimmed too short with long toes and collapsed heels, she had a laminitic episode resulting purely from the poor farriery. The new farrier has rescued her by shoeing her from the X-rays as per the pic with the side clips, the squared off toe is restoring a healthy balance though it is not pretty. It is an on going process.

The feet in the photo are not a pair. Looks like a lot of trouble on the horizon IMHO. Not convinced that the story re the abscess is the full truth.

I wouldn't be bothered by double clips my lad has them on both fronts as he hasn't the best feet and needs the support but the fact the fronts aren't even 'nearly' a pair would have me suspicious, I'd get a remedial farrier to have a look x

If be looking closely at older photos, if they a) don't have any or b) won't let you see them, I'd be walking away. If they do show you I'd be in talks with my own and there farrier before any vetting

OP, farrier needs to look - and talk to pony's current farrier.

I'd be concerned as to 'why' pony is currently for sale - most good horse owners would not advertise an animal that has such a glaringly differently shod hoof.

If you ARE hell-bent on buying, then spend out on a couple of x-rays on that foot.

It won't be a hind shoe, it is a side clip shoe. I don't think any horse is perfect, but no, I don't like odd feet, looks to me as though horse would be very unbalanced, even unsound, also does it need boots all round, is it knocking itself.

It's a bar shoe :)
It was quite close behind but no, it wAsnt knocking itself.

Owned a horse with similar type thing but hind foot. Never gave him a problem. It to was caused by an abscess. Farrier wasn't particularly concerned certainly never told me not to buy him! Later when I sold him it was commented on in vetting but again not an issue, if in doubt get an X-ray done.
