Would You Buy A Horse With This Foot?

No No No. I had a horse with a hoof like that many years ago. It's called a false quarter and has been caused by an injury to the coronary band.

If you want your horse off work on a regular basis with foot infections go ahead but otherwise find another. There are plenty out there.

No from me too. You would never get vet insurance on that foot and vet's fees are horrendous!!! Once you've had lameness issues to contend with as I have for the last 3 years you never consider buying this one. Why start with a problem?
No riding, box rest for months, loads of vet visits, no thanks. Maybe I've been unlucky but I wouldn't consider it. Sorry :o:o:o

It all depends what the farrier and vet advised . Listen to the experts and not the would be experts on a forum.

I had a cob with an injury like this years ago. The split is probably due to damage to the coronary band, which just keeps growing down. We tried all sorts of cures, filling the crack, staples nothing worked and the split just kept coming. It was only after we took the shoe off that foot, it was a back and we took the backs off, that it started to grow out shallower than before. In all it took about 2 years before it became just a line down the hoof, not a crack at all. The damage to the coronary band was still there, but, in this case it was able to grow out, eventually.

Yes - if she has been like that for years with no problems and the vet and farrier were happy that she was up to the work and it wasn't likely to suddenly be an issue, then it wouldn't bother me, but would expect her price to be very low to compensate as her resale value would be tiny.

Some very interesting responses. I have her on LWVTB until end of summer. They are asking £1500 which I think is unrealistic with the state of her foot.

Have you only just taken her on? Have we been told how long the foot has been like that? Has the farrier you've used been with the horse previously?

I would be a lot less worried about buying a foot like that if I had had it on loan and my vet and farrier had seen it.

I actually think that price is very reasonable for that calibre of jumper and reflects the foot issue very fairly. 14 is not that old nowadays.

And finally, just out of interest because I have no idea, when you take a horse on LWVTB, are you meant to be simply loaning and you may think about buying, or have you indicated that you are interested in buying subject to trial at the agreed price?

If she's 14 now and it's been like that for years with no problems, and assuming the vet wasn't too perturbed and she does everything else I wanted, then yes.

People these days seem to be increasingly hung up on clean limbs, never a day lame, perfect feet, no lumps or bumps or sarcoids or anything else. Unfortunately all horses break eventually, there is only so much you can do to delay it but it is inevitable. Why pass up a horse that is perfect for you because of small little things. It could break it's leg in the field tomorrow. Not recommending people go out and buy a crock but equally there are some things which could be overlooked by 90% of the horse owning population as the horse will never even work at half the level it would need to to become a problem.

It sounds like you already know her and her history to me. They're usually the safest ones to buy. If you know she's sound that is worth more than any vetting to me. Plenty of tales of horses passing 5* vettings only to be lame within three months and retired. Which doesn't mean don't have her vetted if you buy, just that knowing the horse for months or years and knowing it is sound is very reassuring!

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant :o

So right. If your farrier is trusted that he can sort it for you & is happy etc that it is cosmetic etc Honestly the amount of rubbish horses that are ruined who have good feet /bodies if this is its one cosmetic imperfection and if you think this one is just what you want and you know it go for it. I would buy it if you know its history etc Havent read the rest of the posts but what happened???Did you buy?

I probably would if he was cheap enough with such a foot.

Then I'd get the shoes off and grow a proper hoof.

It might never look perfect, but it is suprising what they can do given the chance.

^^^ I agree with this, I would also get a vet to have a quick look and poss an x ray to make sure internals were all ok

I AM THE OWNER OF THIS MARE AND I AM HORRIFIED BY WHAT I HAVE SEEN

firstly - apparently this person posting this thread is not even the girl i have loaned my horse out to so what right have u got to put this on here?!?

some facts that need clearing up ! - you have stated on this thread that she only starts to jump "properly" when jumped a 1.30 or higher? I STATED WHEN I LOANED HER OUT SHE WAS NOT TO BE JUMPED BIGGER THAN A METER so if this what true you would be disregarding my wishes.

theres so much mroe on this story but cant say on an open forum ?? what else is there to say ?? this shouldnt even be put on here! but i have nothing to hide?! so what else is more to say

I LOANED THIS MARE OUT AS I DIDNT HAVE TIME TO GIVE HER THE WORK SHE NEEDS SHE LOVES TO BE RIDDEN. I EXPLAINED EVERYTHING TO THE GIRL I HAVE LOANED HER TOO AND HAVE HIDDEN ABSOLUTLY NOTHING!. SHE IS SOUND WITH OR WITHOUT SHOES BUT NEEDS TO BE SHOD IF SHES HACKED OR IF JUMPED. AND FOR PEOPLE SAYING IF THE PRICE WAS RIGHT ?! I HAVE NOT ASKED ALOT FOR HER AND THE HOME IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE PRICE BUT THIS FORUM HAS MADE ME THINK TWICE TO HOW JUDGEMENTAL PEOPLE ARE. YES SHE HAS AN INJURY YES IT COULD AFFECT HER IN LATER LIFE BUT IT IS NOT ANYTHING THAT I HAVENT EXPLAINED TO WHO IS LOANING HER, AND HAS TOTALLY MADE ME THINK TO WHAT MY DECISIONS ARE GOING TO BE. THIS MARES WELFARE IS MY TOP PRIORITY AND WILL HAVE A HOME WITH MY FOR LIFE IF NEED BE.

I for one was under the impression the OP of this thread was viewing this horse to buy, not that the horse was on loan and not even to the OP!

SHE IS ON LWVTB.

I WAS JUST SO SHOCKED BY THIS THREAD. I LOVE THIS MARE AND THINK ALOT OF HER. I HAD MY FRIENDS MAILING ME TELLING ME THAT MY HORSE WAS ON HORSE AND HOUND DISCUSSING HER FOOT THIS REALLY UPSET ME.

SHE IS A HORSE NOT A MACHINE. SHES ONE OF THE SWEETEST MARES YOU COULD FIND.

SO MY ANSWER IS YES I WOULD BUY A HORSE WITH A FOOT LIKE THIS AS JUST BECAUSE SHE HAS A COSMETIC SCAR ON HER HOOF DOSENT MEAN SHE CAN NOT BRING LOTS OF FUN TO THE RIGHT PERSON THAT LOOKS AFTER HER PROPERLY. THIS WS MY CONCERN THAT PEOPLE WOULD JUST JUDGE HER AND WOULDNT GIVE HER A SECOND LOOK AND ITS PROVED ME RIGHT.

Im not surprised! is she even up for sale? that is great that she has a owner who thinks so highly of her! :) what happened to her hoof? please don`t think everyone is going to judge her like this... like I said my original reply was to someone who I thought was viewing a horse to buy as im sure alot of other people who replied thought the same.

.

I think this is exactly the sort of horse buying dilemma that it is a good idea to post on forums. What is your problem with it being discussed here? It is an interesting looking foot, not one I'd personally pay money to mess about with but at least you know from this thread that plenty of people think differently and would buy her. I'm sure she is very sweet but that's kind of beside the point, we're talking about the foot injury. BTW people hate posts written in capitals, it comes across as shouting.

Good to see the owner on here, putting the record straight (even if we all are a bit deaf, now).

To be fair, nobody has been as critical as often happens and there are mixed views, some interesting comments and a fair spread of yays and nays.

Perhaps unwise to post pictures but a helpful 'case' if taken on hoof interest alone. I don't see any shooting down of the owner (you) either, so no need to get shouty. It's good that you love her and are prepared to keep her if the right home doesn't come along. I didn't get the impression she was going to be jumped hugely, just that she wasn't affected adversely by her foot.

OP if horse was sound and not having any bother then id get vet and farrier together and make an offer based on findings. I findings from them were no then no :)

Owner (or claimed owner) people can discuss interesting horse attributes to their hearts content, theres no need to get offended, if your selling it then people have the right to ask about stuff they know nothing about.

Nobody actually slated your horse, opinions were given dispassionaely and truthfully socoming on here and having a hissy fit isnt the best way to get the point across ;)

Apparently not... Which is in contradiction to the person asserting that they are the owner...

1. Turn the blasted Caps lock off...:)
2. I don't see why it would be a problem per se seeing her hoof being discussed... There are varying views which you would no doubt receive from people interested in purchasing her anyway... Plus, if your mare (and you) are able to educate some people as to how it happened, long term prognosis etc - individuals such as myself who have not seen this type of 'imperfect' hoof before might learn something...

I agree with JessTickle... If she'd had it for a long time, been sound, the current vet and farrier could validate and assure - I wouldn't write her off as unsuitable purely because of the hoof... But then I don't chase aesthetic perfection and am pretty used to 'clinical oddities' in the family...:)

No need to shout :)

I think you'll find as many people have said yes, they would buy the horse, as have said no

It must have been a shock to find pics of your horses foot online but for us it's really great to have them. Plenty of people won't ever have seen a foot like that before so what a perfect opportunity for us all to learn about it. And, as you aren't a regular, I can reassure you that plenty of the yes's have come from some of our most hoof obsessive members. :)

I totally agree and all the differying opinions are very interesting :)

If you know her, she's 14 and foot not caused a problem previously and she's everything you want otherwise, then yes. Think someone has already said, you can buy what appears to be a healthy, blemish free horse that passes a vetting, only for it to go lame or injure itself the day after.

:) Well one of my cobs has the same problem, yes it looks awful I agree, but having had him since he was 18 months old he is now 14yrs, I must say it has never given him a problem, it is very difficult to improve it, my farrier has certainly tried, but when it starts at the top coranary band its almost impossible to stop it, I hope this helps,:)

It your choice!!!!! Personally I wouldn't, though, unless it were growing out, she were fully sound, able to perform and suited to the rider! Get the opinion of a vet, consider the long term implications, etcetera. How long has her foot been like that, and is it Just "how it is" or has she had an accident, etcetera.

To the owner of the horse, I wouldn't be too hard on the person loaning the horse WVTB. It sounds like some other busibody on her yard has taken it on themselves to post this thread so that they can wave all the "don't buy it" opinions on here under the loaners nose - obviously they haven't taken her advice and she's not happy about it! I'm sure the person loaning the horse already knows that the person who posted this thread is nobody to take much notice of! They're probably exagerating about the metre 30 too!

I'm sure you will find someone to happily take on this horse at the price you are asking. Good luck and don't be too worried about this thread. It won't do any harm - lots of people have said they have had experience of similar feet without any problems..

I've got a cob with a foot like this...
Picture691.jpg

it's not caused him much trouble, other than the odd foot infection (this is a picture of the wall looking very good occasionally it is more cracked and crumbly depending on weather) he is now at age of 16 starting to suffer from ringbone in this foot.

:) and I might add no amount of money would buy him !:)

Good post:) (though I think £1500 is too much for a foot like that .....in this market, sadly, you'd be lucky to give her away)
