Following on from the horse meat in a restaurant thread. This is a simple yes/no poll

Forget the journey from field to table, morals and ethics.

Would you, could you, eat horse meat if offered it on a plate?

no but i am a veggie - however if i were a meat eater i still wouldnt, because i am a horse lover.
I cant bear to kill any animal to eat it so bit unfair for me to vote really

I voted no, but if it was served to me on a plate and I was not told it was horse meat I would most likley eat it.

How would you feel if you then said "This is great, what is it?" ?

I did that the first time I ate goat meat after swearing never to eat it because they are so cute :( now I raise goats specifically for the freezer.

Yes - I eat chicken, duck and rabbit and have kept them all as pets. I hope to rear geese and chickens for the table in future, and maybe pigs too. Although I'd want to know where the horse meat came from.

Forgot to say that I am in the YES camp, you'd have to sit on me and force me to eat anything slimy like snails, shellfish, squid etc though.

Yes.

I have said this before but I would probably try anything offered to me.

I have eaten kid goat, donkey, elk, ostrich, buffalo, veal and a few other odd things and enjoyed them all.

Nothing like eating something you have killed and prepared yourself though. I would rather an animal lived and died in the wild than never saw the outside of a building, ended it's days in the abbatoir and got chucked in my shopping trolley wrapped in cellophane. I eat things like the former very, very graciously.

Nope no way. I do eat some meat but am not a fan of red meat anyway so probably not the best person to ask!!!

I'm vegetarian, but have eaten meat and if i still ate meat i would probably try it. I don't think there is any difference in eating a cow/horse/cat/dog/chicken/rabbit etc It annoys me when people say "oh no i couldn't eat a poor little bunny" why? you eat a poor little lamb! Meat is meat and to me all animals should be treated with equal respect. It is the way they are treated before slaughter in some situations that i have issue with. But yes, horse is meat and people eat meat.

No, but i wont eat Frair Graire(sp) (fattened duck or gease liver )- veal or parmasan cheese - made from stomach lining of calfs.

I also would not eat frogs legs or snails!

But tbh - i just wish the old days would come back, when slaughter day was on a Monday - and the animal was taken out of the field, walked to the shed, killed and cut up - why oh why do we have to trans-ship these poor poor animals to reach "governement approved slaughter houses" - call ourselves a nation of animal lovers -but then again the RSPCA is supposed to help animals arnt they?

Probably yes if pressed, but I don't think I'd CHOOSE to eat it off a menu. I strongly suspect that I had it once in France, it was served as steak, but it didn't taste like any steak I've had before!

Maybe but only after I have tryed baby and dog first!!!! its the fact it suports a vile long distance trade and breeding in eastern europe or slaugter by the most barbaric method in mexico that offends most and the fact people would eat something that has given man so much though our history, we have achived so much thanks to the horse.. on that basis I would say only ignorant shallow minded people would condone eating it..,

No I wouldn't. I would try it... possibly :p

I have no problem with others eating it, personal preference, but i do have big problems with the transportation to slaughter. This is the main reason I wouldn't eat it if offered.

If I knew that had been put right, I would try it, but doubt I could make a habit of it.

And I would say that this is a very ignorant point of view. :)

Not all horsemeat is traded this way. And in fact some other animals (deer, and cows) are also treated appalingly, but how many people stop to think of this.

I have eaten horse - I am a meat eater, therefore I will eat any meat (that tastes good) - I don't see how eating a horse is different to a cow, to be honest.

As a meat eater, I'v eaten most meats and fish, shellfish etc. I love game and will happily gut, pluck, skin, chop up etc. In the supermarket/butcher I choose to buy free range as often as I can and will pay more money for it. I will eat cow, pig, sheep, goat, deer, rabbit, chicken, turkey, ostrich, pheasant, grouse, pigeon etc. I believe animals should be treated with respect before they must die for our table.
But the thought of eating horse makes me feel physically sick! Likewise I would never eat dog, human, cat... these animals show emotion and I am convinced are too intelligent to be classed as food. Neither will I eat octopus as they are one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. Or shark, whale etc.

Ethically raised, of course I would. I eat meat, horse is cheap, lean and nutritious. I try my best to eat a the very least "freedom food" standard if not free range. I don't buy pork from denmark (surpringly hard) as a lot of it comes from sow crates. I would also eat rose veal and there's even and ethical frois grass (takes advantage of the gooses natural gorging instinct in autumn, obv makes it a seasonal ingredient however)

I love horses and if there was another option I wouldn't particularly choose to eat them but if I had to wouldn't bother me, providing it hadn't be hauled halfway across europe on the hoof rather than the hook.

I voted no and would not knowingly eat horsemeat in any shape or form. I am a meat eater, although don't eat as much these days. If I was served horsemeat I would refuse to eat it. I would hope though that I would not be in position where I did not know the meat origin in a dish I was about to eat. I won't eat veal either. Years ago on a school trip to Austria we were served veal as we passed through Germany during our stay. That was in the 80's and I refused to eat it on welfare grounds and the age of the animal compared to the lifespan of a cow/bull for slaughter ( obviously before the BSE and F&M crisis). Although the welfare issues are now more stringent for veal calves in this country ( not sure on abroad, or non EU countries?) I would still refuse to eat it. The same is true of horsemeat. If others want to eat it. That is up to them. Personally I won't touch the stuff and would refuse to eat a meat I did not know.

No, but I'm veggie, but even if I weren't, still no, as I see them as pets with personality.

See thats what bothers me. All animals have a personality! Just because one is a pet you are giving it more right to live than one that is not a pet. That is bizzare IMO
Edited to add: In fact it is not bizzare as i can understand where you coming from, but if you really think about it, it is odd to say i'll happily eat one living being but not another because i want to play with it.

Um, cows are significally brighter than horses (who are one of the most stupid of domesticated animals - sheep are brighter!) and both sheep and cows have personality. I know a couple of pet cows and they are much gentler, brighter and more affectionate than horses!

I wouldn't eat shark or whale as they are endangered stock and the slaughter used is barbaric. However I would if they were farmed with high welfare standards and killed humanely.

I would never eat Foie Gras or European veal as it's production is cruel. I also try my hardest not to eat normal chicken (as hard as it is - it's everywhere), only free range, and only british rearer and slaughtered beef/lamb/pork, and always Farm Assured/welfare friendly stuff if possible.

I'd have no problem eating horse either, if the same standards apply.

I have in the past and would have no problem in the future. I have more concern with eating pork than horse. That is on the grounds that pigs are omnivores and therefore the meat is of a different quality (also pigs are proven to be of a higher intelligence than horses). The issue I have with meat is the manner in which it is raised, transported and slaughtered. I will eat horse but would not eat any animal which was not at least pre-stunned, which in my book disqualifies cosher and halal meat.

Actually, Halal and Kosher slaughter done PROPERLY is one of the most welfare friendly meats. Their laws insist the animal feels no threat or fear before hand (and their slaughter houses are build with that in mind) and when done properly with a very sharp knife and good technique it is VERY humane. They should have no idea of what's about to happen and the slit throat causes such an instant drop in blood pressure that they 'faint' instantly. Stunning on the other hand doesn't always cause unconsciousness............

I have slaughter all species of animals (cows, sheep, pig and deer) and seen Halal slaughter and when done PROPERLY it's all a calm, dignified affair.
