when I bought my pony as a 5 year old he was originally called Deal. I hated it so I changed it to Merlin but I got so many people having a go at me for it- however he suited merlin so well and I cant ever imagine it being different!

So, would you change a horses name or never?

Yes if it had a really silly name, not if it was halfway sensible. I have tried to change a name before but in my head the name was already there!

There is a dealer near me who called one of their horses (a very handsome black beauty-alike) 'Sexy St Evenage' which was quite funny but I couldn't have a horse called Sexy!

Yes not really into this superstitious malarkey

Imagine if it was called Toe Nail clippings ? im sure 99% of people would change it ;)

The thought lingers that its bad luck or so I'm told, I wouldn't have chosen my filly's name but she's nearly 2 and its stuck now would feel weird changing it but would have chosen Mayola after one of my fave Arabs ridden to date plus she was born in may, but can't bring myself to change it now. Oh we'll there's always her show name!

I changed my current ponys name from Rory to Freddie.

I probably would have left it, but at the time I was living in France and the French would have pronounced it "Horehay".

:rolleyes::D

Yes I have and would. Nell was called freckles!!(She has some marks near her stifle which are a bit spotty) I think everyone can understand why I changed it! She came from a dealer so it was only a kind of distinguishing name really, but I have no issue in changing names

I've never changed names but I have shortened them to give them a stable name. I did have a mare called Fanny at one point which I might have changed if I was keeping her but she was just a summer project to sell on.

I decided a couple of years ago after getting a horse with a name I didn't like that I'd just change them all from now on. I e singed changed the names of 2 horses I've had.

1 was PTS as a 5 year old after a bad injury and the other was an absolute nightmare.

I'm not a superstitious person but it has made me wonder.....I don't think I'd do it again.

We have changed loads of names...the one which sticks out is a big strapping 4 yr old welsh D called Prancer!!!!! So inappropriate for such a big lad!

We have never had any problems with any of the horses we have renamed. Superstition is really just a way for people to attribute blame for bad luck!!

I've added a stable name to my boy ;)

He came with a long winded name on his passport, which ive kept the same, and call him by his stable name :)

Although to be fair... I rarely call him by his name :p usually.... big handsome.. cheeky monster.... clever boy.... etc :o

Only changed names if pony has only had name for a short while, ie a rescue pony called Molly renamed Tess as already had a Molly on the Yard. About to get a new one next week who has only ever been known by her show name which is rather a mouthful. Asked breeder if they didnt mind and they are happy for me to give pony a stable name. Now need to get thinking cap on.

Changed both my horses names, One was called 'Sinta' as she is dutch- changed in to Summer.
The other one was called Harvey, I changed it back to his passport name Finnigan (but I spell it different! as in Finnegan )

yup changed both of mine! an ex racer who was called luke... rang his old owner and she said she called him freddie so he was immediatly changed back to freddie and it totally suits him!! and my warmblood was called aaron i could not shout that out across a field so to keep with the A theme of his dad and grandad -arko! he was renamed Arnie and this deffo suits him better than aaron!! and freddie is now an injured broken pony with torn back suspensories i did think ohhhh god why did i change his name but heyho nevermind he would have injured himself anyway!!! it is only a name at the end of thd day! they have both kept their registered names thou!! not that i like either of them!!!!

I gave mine a stable name because the dealer didn't know it! I don't use his passport name, unofficially and for shows, I gave him a new show name. I think it's €65 to change his passport name, I can live with it!

NO NEVER, but I am superstitious :o hate ponies name ( Levi ) I don't even think it suits him, but he knows it and comes when I call him :)

I always thought mine responded to my voice as opposed to his name because have a million pet names for him, but according to the kid who occasionally catches him in, he comes pelting over at his name. :D
