As title says, going from these photo's, would you have bought this horse as a dressage/all rounder:

Because I did.

Had him 6 months now, best decision I ever made.

At the time people said I was stupid, he was ugly, poor quality etc, plus he had been in the field doing nothing for about a year.

It was his personality I fell in love with though.

So how important are looks to you, would you have bought him judging from his appearance above?

This is him now:

coincidently one of the 'friends' who said he was ugly and rubbish, now wants to buy him LOL.

Well you know I love Beau, to be honest i probably would have fallen for temperament definetly, HUGE horses with temperaments like his are not that easy to come by

he looks completley different. i personally don't care what the horse looks like as long as it serves its purpose and is safe.

hahaha about your friend, he who laughs first and all that

Oh my gosh

I have to admit, if it was me, probably not, cause I admit, I am a real snob when it comes to good looking horses
blush.gif
BUT, what a fantastic job you have done on him!! He looks wonderful, especially under saddle, so well done you for spotting what was underneath the woolly coat and beard
grin.gif

yes i would have bless him,hes a lovely big boy !!
he looks fantastic !
looks dont matter if you get that feeling and you know hes the one then thats what i go on as you can tell by my big beast !!!!

he he I agree.

Needless to say I would never in a million years sell him, it just saddens me to think about how many fantastic horses people miss out on, because they arent willing to take a chance on an ugly duckling, or a horse that perhaps hasnt had the best care or start in life.

Absolutely Jess, it was his temperment that I knew I couldnt miss out on.

LOL it certainly was some beard!

for me the big difference is the look in his eyes, he seems happy now
smile.gif

aww he is lovely!
i did the same and bough my horse judging on his temprement and not looks and im soo glad i did as he has put the weight on and condition and is soo rewarding as he was never reli loved!

Your absolutely right about the look in his eye's, he looks so gentle and kind. He also reminds sooooooooo much of my mum's retired boy, same colour, same kind of star and a real good do'er, quite uncanny. You must be really pleased with yourself, I know I would be
smile.gif

Wizoz Im just pleased we found him. We went to see over 30 horses before finding him.

You wouldnt think wanting something safe would be that hard to find LOL!

You are right missyccp it is so rewarding, especially to know they are happy.

No because he's flipping huge and I am a short *rse!!
grin.gif

But you have done an amazing job, he looks lovely now

Any horse I buy for myself does not need to look great at purchasing....in fact most of them don't! However I have vision....I know exactly how that horse will look once it has been muscled up, in it's summer coat with a winter of good food in it's belly etc etc.

Any horse I buy as a seller-on has to be pretty and nicely marked I'm afraid as this is what my purchasers are looking for. All of the rest mentioned above still stands though - I don't care whether the horse is in poor condition or a bit woolly.....I will still be able to see their potential.

yes... i would have... he had a weak neck, but the rest looked good. good for you, seeing beneath the unfitness and hairiness and getting him looking so great.
conformation is important, looks aren't, imho.

see thats what I saw, apart from his neck, I thought his conformation was good.

Friend who now wants to buy him (and who was the inspiration for this thread) thought he had rubbish conformation

It must have magically changed for her.

PMSL! OH find it hilarious that Beau's head is the size of my entire upper body!

Yes, he looks in the first pic that with some TLC he would come through ok.

My first TB was skin, bone and sores - but with TLC and 8 months she turned out to be a cracker that did well at everything local level and I still have stacks of red rosettes to prove it.

I do love big horses, even though I am a 4'11 and a tiny bit short arse.

might have done from first pic as I like horses that really walk - overtrack, loose long 'TB' type walk - if they can walk out freely that's a good start

if he'd had no nasty lumps and bumps and also was cuddly

and taking his neck off the rest of him is a square so that's good too

wooly coat and weak neck not too bothered

but colour - I'd not necessarily go for a bay

he's lovely though now and you can see his kind eye

You know I love him to bits, You have done a fab job with him and he keeps getting better and better you should be proud of him and yourself
laugh.gif

I dont think looks are important, a lot of people cant see past a big coat etc and so miss out on some cracking horses. He is lovely.

argh he's lovely, i always go for a kind eye and he's got one!!! its not looks that make a good horse!!! i think my boy is stunning but other people might think different but he's got a soft kind eye!!! it does it for me!!!

xxxxxxxxxxx

Wow - what a transformation! He looks great and is a credit to you.
smile.gif

Tbh I wouldn't have bought him - but that's cos he's not really my type rather than cos he was woolly and unmuscled.

Looks are certainly important to me, but I hope I can see past a hairy coat etc.
wink.gif

Yes! He has an incredibly kind eye and I would have seen through the fact that he was unfit and been in the field doing nothing. I can see why you fell for him - he is just my type of horse and I bet he will repay you 100 fold.

i go for temperament over looks thats why i bought my mare after looking at numerous horses.

he looks fantastic well done good luck with your future together
smile.gif

I always go for temperament over looks. My first horse was called 'ugly' by other people, but they laughed on the other side of their faces when he took me drag hunting and popped over anything, while their handsome steeds planted their feet in the mud!
grin.gif
I bought one that looked similar to him a few years ago - my OH said she looked like a gypsy horse! Within about 6 months she was a stunner
grin.gif

Yes absolutely! It’s about seeing the potential and you obviously have.

I brought this at Christmas, unhandled…

And this is him last weekend….

Ditto Puppy - he looks way too big for me and I'd have been scared but then again if he was well behaved and kind that may have swung it as I was looking for a sensible horse. I actually thought my own horse was not 'great' looking when I bought her and I wasn't there at the vetting (OH went instead , I was working) so I only had a few rubbish pics of her from our viewing and thought she looked a bit ugly. However, I now love her to bits and think she's gorgeous...though she is not the sensible horse I was looking for!

Edited to improve spellings!

I would have bought him as he looks like he has a really kind face! But hey he was a cutey then and now he looks stunning! I bought George because of his temprament/attitude, he will never be a dressage horse but I love him because he's mine and that's what it's all about!
