Would you have centrally heated stables if you could?

Hmm, just pondering (and haven't really thought this through so it may be a silly idea)....

With the amount of money people spend on stable rugs, would it have been better to invest the same amount of money in using heat lamps or central heating in stables?

Obviously it would be more feasible in american barn set ups than traditional stables, and proper ventilation would still need providing but even so?
Would you consider it a good thing if a yard offered this, or would you just think it weird?!

Certainly not - horses are able to cope perfectly well with the cold. But going from warm to the cold outdoors then back in the warm again would be harmful IMO.

Besides, no heating would be effective with the amount of ventilation horses need - you'd be throwing money away.

Not for stables, but some foaling boxes use heat lamps for early, or weak foals. What I would love would be solarium lamps for after bathing or hard work

No - Constant heating would cost way more than paying for a rug. Especially with energy costs these days. Plus horses can regulate their own body temperature well enough as it is.

no, i think it would be detrimental to the horse's health, for the central heating to heat the stable properly you would have to shut the top doors and there wouldn't be enough ventilation....breathing problems would be much much more common. They are animals for god's sake!

Only just had it fitted in the house!!! let alone in stables!

But no, I wouldn't even if I won the lottery it wouldn't be good for the horse. Maybe a seperate drying area though.....

I think a yard near here has it! It is lovely to walk into there indoor yard! SOOOOO warm! Not hot, just comfy! I think it may even be underfloor heating!

Just heated water troughs.

That would be a good idea, just to keep them from freezing over.

Heated water troughs would be great, I *think* you can get them in the USA/Canada but have never heard of them over here?
Dozziesmummy, I wonder if thats the same one my friend was telling me about that started this off? That and we were talking about whether it would be silly for cows to have rugs instead of heat lamps...
Thanks everyone, its been really interesting

Not stables no.

Heated water bowls, washrooms, rug rooms, tackrooms and indoor school - Oh Yes!

On the other hand, in summer, when there isn't a whisper of a breeze and you break into a sweat just thinking about moving, then air conditioned barns would be fabulous.

Legend, yes, we do have heated troughs, tanks, buckets (take your pick) over here, you need them. I have them for my dogs, goats, cats and rabbits too!

Stables, no. Hot water, washroom, tackroom---YES! Arena---no. You get warm enough when you're working hard.

Air conditioning? In this utterly freezing country? You must be mad! I've been here two summers, and there hasn't been a single day above 25 that I can recall, and few enough above 20!
