Iv been offered a welsh gelding section a 10 yr old for free as the owners just want shoot. He's very pretty was a fab lead rein pony but only been companion for the last 3 yrs and has done well in showing in the past and quilified for nps winter championships. Now iv been up front and said he will be brought back in work by the son and sold on which they are happy with as he's just stood in field having nothing done. Now I know the market is bad so am I being silly or with the time and work put into him will he sell as a lead rein? Is the Market good for lead reins at the mo? Don't really want to be stuck with him but know that's a risk I take but as long as he sold before nxt winter it would be fine. Would you take him and try getting him a nice home or is it best left?

what a shame. I think that he would be better with you than with people who don't want him. Even if you bring him on to a decent level and sell him, at least you are giving the best chance of having a good life. What is going to hapen if you don't take him, market?
I think good lead rein or first ridden ponies will always be sought after.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth as they say...

Up to you really, the investment is your time rather than your money if he's free... Do you believe what they are telling you? I belive there is ALWAYS a market for decent, kind and honest kids ponies at a fair price...

If you have the time and the knowledge and the pony's sound then sure, why not! I would make sure some money is exchanged though, even if £1 and they give you a receipt of sale. Last thing you want is to put all the work and money in and them turn around and say they want him back so they can then sell on and reap the reward!

I'm not to sure what has happened in the home he's in now but he's a local pony and people seem to think he was a very nice pony but wasted now. He's stood in a tiny patch off mud, no lie it's up to his knees and he looks sad. At least he would have a stable at night, company by day and plenty off love from my son who spends hrs talking to his pony. I will make sure I pay £1 for him so I can get a receipt

You dont have much to lose really do you? Sounds like a nice pony, lets be honest it wont cost a fortune to keep. I think that if you know what you are doing, you are on a win situation.

How funny, just about to take on a 8yr old similar sounding pony. Need another animal like a hole in the heAd but can't bear to see the poor thing neglected any more. It is so sweet that I know if I can't find a good home it will spend it's days here being pampered along with everything else.

Should we compare progress!!!

I always think that in your old age you will never say you were glad you left that pony to rot???

I think there is so many ponies who need homes at the mo it's a real shame.
Yours is 2 years younger, what colour is yours? Mines dun

What happens if he's not gone by winter like you said? Don't take on a pony which you can't keep long term if needs be. Because you don't really know what you're getting or how it's going to turn out.

If he hasn't gone by nxt winter than he hasn't but would like him gone by nxt winter is what I was meaning.

There was a member of the forum not long ago desperately trying to find a nice pony for her offspring. She was having real problems.

Bombproof him, as much as it is possible to, get him thoroughly used to kids and then see how he goes. A couple of the great features of this pony are that: firstly he is papered and has won showing, so maybe more attractive to parents and also more likely to be kept in a forever home because he can be shown after he has been out grown. Secondly,he is dun and I,for one, love duns; I have always wanted one!

So yes, if I had my own land I would definitely have him. You won't really be losing anything
