Would you leave them in without hay??

I have decided to leave mine in tonight, I dont like them out when it's lightening like this. I've just been to get them and all 4 are soaking wet and shivering!! (In JUNE!!) so I've put them in, rugged up etc and then realised i've run out of hay! I'm hopeing the farmer up the road is in so I can nip up and get a bale but they are staying in regardless. Was just wondering, would you leave a horse in over night without hay if you were in my position??

They are stood in now I will walk them out for grass in about an hour, give them a feed with lots of chop at midnight and turn out at about 5am

I know it's not ideal/right but i'd rather risk them been empty for 5 hours then been struck by lightening. I've never seen lightening like this before, big folks, like the movies!

I'm going to nip to the farm up the road to see if I can get a bale from there, thanks so much for the offer, I'm in Derbyshire though! xx
 
I would rather my lad was out than in with no hay...they are no safer in the stable away from the lightening anyway really. Perhaps leave them in for a couple of hours to dry off and then put rain sheets on when dry and turn them back out???

Yup, agree with this. If they are cold, the best way to warm a horse up (in my experience

) is to get some fibre inside them. If you haven't got any hay, they are probably better off muching grass.

totally agree with this, would much rather they were out. i got caught in a storm the other day out riding, it just came on so suddenly i was pooping myself, but my girly was a star

I'm sure they would have been fine.
Horses are 'starved' overnight all the time for GA's, gastroscopes (starved for 48hrs), glucose absorption tests ect with no ill verse effects

I have to say that I agree with everybody else. I would not leave my horses standing in without some sort of long fibre to munch on. I don't like my horses out in storms, but they don't seem to mind them as much as I do!

Good point! Yes it was very good of him, I said I would go and pick it up but he's said he would bring it as it would make a mess in my car! Bless him

I think they are much better off out - it is the ones left in who always seemed to stress the most in storms. Not to mention the fact that your stables are far more likely to be hit by lightning than your horse is.
