i have bought the broodmare i was going to see last week :)

i have left a 10% deposit and the owner wants to deliver her to see where shes going. thats totally fine with me. just wondered though.....she wants paid in full before she comes to me? if i have had a horse delivered i have always paid the remainder on delivery?

is it normal to pay in full 1st? i did offer to pick the mare up and pay the remainder by cash but owner says no.

feels a bit strange to me but maybe its normal? xx
 
I wouldn't pay up front no. Id pay on delivery unless i knew them well or invite them to view the yard beforehand then pick her up and pay then. Just imagine if they never showed up!
 
yep i thought the replies would be this! just wanted to make sure as have usually picked up any horse i have bought.

she was pretty adamant too that she wanted paid the day before. i would much rather pick the mare up myself. have told the woman she is more than welcome to come and see the mare if she is ever in the area etc.

also she made out she was really concerned about where the mare was going etc. but she was quite happily going to pack her off to london on the basis of a phonecall xx
 
Not in a million years! You've given her a 10% deposit, the best I would offer is a small amount towards diesel costs of transporting the mare but nothing more than that, if she doesn't turn up you're going to have a nightmare on your hands.
 
Nothing leaves my farm until it has been paid for in full. I ship all over the States, often to unknown and unseen buyers and there's no way I'd ship a horse without full payment. I certainly wouldn't deliver one until the money is in my account unless I knew the person and have had business dealings with them before. I don't want cash either; I'm a business and as such all business transactions for me must have a paper trail and email bank transfers is perfect as both buyer and seller have a bank receipt automatically.

Have you not been to see her then? If that's the case I'd go and have a look before you part with any more cash. I've always paid upfront but I've only ever bought youngsters for a few hundred anyway.
Especially as she seems reluctant to let you collect.
She could take your money and A, not turn up or B, send a friend to deliver something quite unlike what you were expecting...

Umm, I sell my horses to new homes often thousands of miles away. I *always* want to see where they are going but cannot always find the time to travel there, doesn't mean I don't care where they are going and if I had any doubts (after thoroughly checking the buyers out) they wouldn't be sold to that person.
 
We paid upfront. When I tried him we offered a deposit, lady didn't take deposit as wanted time to think to make sure we were right for him.
We spoke later that night on the phone she agreed to sell to us, vetting was arranged and we were due to go on holiday 3 days after vetting. He passed and we transferred the money to her account. She delivered him 2 weeks later.
We only done this as felt totally comfortable with the lady and she was very honest about everything and felt that we could trust her.
 
I bought a youngster from a stud about 200 miles away, paid in full by bank transfer. I've since bought two more from the same stud, and my sister bought one, all paid in full by bank transfer in advance.

i suppose if she were a breeder with a reputation it would be different but its a private sale and shes not far away. she is delivering because she wants to see where shes going but i would be more than happy to pick the horse up and she could if she wanted come and see where the mare would be coming beforehand xx

i have been to see her yes. it is the reluctance for me to collect myself that kind of worries me the most i think. also there has been no contact since i paid the deposit into her account, although to be fair i havent called her. thought maybe she would have been in touch even just to give me an idea of what time she might arrive xx
 
Trying to play Devil's advocate: I can see her side too - if she really wants to see where the mare is going before she goes through with it ... (ie as in mare actually settled in...) and maybe she's been stung before by people cancelling cheques after they're in her hand?

I don't know. But as you've offered to pay cash if you collect, why not simply offer to pay cash when she delivers?

Maybe. I wonder if she just wants to kill two birds with one stone, take the horse to you and see your place at the same time? I have to say, I don't want my horse going on any trailer until it's been paid for ... injuries or accidents and suchlike.

i can see her side too. i suppose she is scared that she gets here and i change my mind or something but if she would let me pick her up and hand her the cash then theres no problem?

i have offered cash on delivery but she says no x

maybe thats all it is just a little unsure.

see the thing about accidents/injuries etc. also worries me! thats why i would rather pick her up muself then if anything were to happen the mare is paid for and my responsibilty. if i pay before delivery and the mare is injured whilst loading then i stand to lose even more x

Then I'd be veeeerrryyyy wary. Especially as she's close to you, so it's not like she's wasting ££££'s on petrol or time.
There is no reason for her to not accept such an offer. I do hope it works out MW, but myself? I'd be asking for my deposit back and walking away.
 
I have always paid on delivery or collection, I would never fully pay for a horse until it was in my eyesight on my yard or getting on my box.

If paper trail was required then seller has a receipt book or I can do an instanst transfer there and then to their bank infront of them. I would even write a receipt up myself with two copies to be signed by both partied with witnesses if required, but they wouldn't be getting a penny of my cash until I had the horse. Easy enough to turn around and leave with horse if I didn't pay.

I would agree if it was going on any trailer but if I was delivering and cash was guaranteed to be paid on delivery that would be fine.
If collected it is cash on collection or by other methods to allow money to clear then responsibility passes immediately to new owner, if delivered I feel it is my responsibility until I have approved the home, if that is part of the deal, and unloaded, then swap money for horse, receipt and passport.
Is the mare known to be used to travelling, I would worry that she may not be that good, possibly she will get upset in some way and the owner could think you will change your mind if a steaming, wild eyed horse emerges from the trailer.
 
When I have picked the horse up myself from a private seller or breeder I've paid as I've collected it.
Otherwise the balance has been paid for prior to delivery if the previous owner wasn't delivering.
When they have I e paid them as the horse got off the lorry.
 
Could you perhaps, go to her yard if its not far away pay her then, you both can be present when loading and follow her back to your yard? Ask her why she is concerned also?
I will be paying before delivery on the tb I'm hoping to buy who is quite a way away but that's from a stud and I feel ok about it. Every situation is of course different.

i am aware that the mare takes patience to load but told she travels fine once in. she has been travelled to stud and to vet to be scanned.

im thinking maybe the mare doesnt travel too well but surely the owner wouldn't want to travel a heavily in foal mare if she thought there might be problems? x

Well I know of a lovely broodmare for sale, in foal to a stunning stallion - owned by someone who may be easier to deal with ;)
 
Okay what if you take your trailer there to collect the horse. You give the lady her cash before loading the horse, then that's that dealt with, the horse then belongs fully to you. She helps you load up and then she follows you back to your yard? If she wants to see the yard prior to the mare moving then she could pop over before moving the mare to view it and then again to see the mare settle in after you've travelled her home.
