Would you post under your real name?

I don't post under my own name, and have very close privacy settings on anything like facebook, as I work with people who may find it useful to find information about me. I have already had someone try to access my personal e-mail account. I know another client tried to find my home address through google. I have a fairly unusal name, so will keep my annonmity as much as possible. There are some people on here who know who I am, but they are people who have no contact with my clients and who I trust to keep my identity to themelves.

Out of interest, why do people who say they'd be fine about posting under their real names, not do so?

In the context of the initial question, which was "would you say the same things if you had to post under your own name", then yes I would, as I don't post anything that I wouldn't say in real life or under my own name.

I'm not hard to find - I know lots of people on here "in real life" and I have a link to my website in my profile.

So anyone who wants to know my real name can find out very easily.

But that doesn't mean I particularly want to go out of my way to draw attention to my identity - I don't feel the need to make it obvious, or want to broadcast it to the whole world at a glance, but nor do I make any attempt to hide it for anyone who cares enough to find out, IYSWIM.

I hadn't really thought about it, but I am Casey76 all over the internet, and very few places I am different.

If I had to use my real name it wouldn't change what I post

When I first came here, to ask for help with my dodgy return to horse ownership :o someone on the yard recognised me. They didn't say so until when I was about to leave the yard. Then they had a go at me about what I'd posted here.

I read back over and over what I'd said here, and to this day could not see I'd said anything to upset that person or anyone else.

It did make me think about how people can have a different take on what we write and made me keener to not be too easily spotted here.

I would post under my real name yes.

For those who think it would mean people would be more careful about what they posted I'd they used their real names I don't agree

Look at Facebook, most people post under their own names yet it gets blamed for everything from marriage break ups to bullying

That's true, there's some very extreme stuff posted there in what are presumably peoples' real names.

My username is my nickname and howi am referred to in most aspects of my life. I don't care who knows who I am. I know people on here for whom I was just a username and vice versa. Guess what...no lies or bugging ourselves up on here meant no awkwardness. We are who we are. As said abover, privacy is worth protecting but I will tell if asked :-)

I must be pretty thick as other than those using what appear to be real names and a one or two I have "met" thru other online stuff, such as feeding courses, I have no idea who any of you are in real life. I only post on here if I think I have something to offer or need advice myself very like me in real life, I think.

My name on here is my surname in RL But I haven't met anyone else on here that I know in RL or do I ?

Yes I would say whatever I say under my own name, I think I'm rather inoffensive, but when people have a go at each other on here and they say 'but in your last post you said this...' 'your reply on this thread says quite the opposite!' I think how awful! It's like an archive of your opinions to be held against you!

I do find it weird and awkward when you meet someone in real life and you have to acknowledge you recognise them from the internet... Not sure why! I wouldn't find it weird people recognising me from facebook groups etc though because I use my real name!

I would post under my name, I don't because I wanted to do the whole make up a forum name :D even though its not officially made up as its Ameys show name.

FionaM12 I'm really curious as to what your name is now you've said how usual it is :o.

No, I wouldn't for two reasons: First, it's the internet. Once it's there it's there. Secondly, I am a dead poet, so I can't use my real name...

I just like anonymity. ..

I dont know if I'm going to explain this very well but its also a very personal view..I don't want people to think I come on here to give out advice because I think I know lots of 'stuff' on horses. In fact I rarely give any advice, I really have no confidence in myself.. I just ask questions as I dont really have anyone I can ask!

Ive also had to ask a few questions about difficult loan situations and I think times like that anonymity is sometimes for the best.

Having said that ive posted pictures of my ponies so I guess I could identified and I have one person I know on my fb who was on here and JFTD I think we spoke briefly over a mutual friends fb post.. if you remeber my name I commend your memory!

Don't worry BYH, while I remember chatting to you on a certain (notorious!) user's facebook, I couldn't even begin to remember your name.

Mind you, most days I struggle to remember my own name ;)

Most of the stuff I write on here I would write under my real name, no one really reads what I write anyway. That said, recently I have been boiling over with stuff going on in my horsey life that I am really not happy with but I wouldn't dare write anywhere on the internet because nothing is ever really secret, so I keep it to myself, best way if you don't want anyone to find something out.

I tell you what I do sometimes do though: call people by their forum names in real life :o

Now that's embarassing!

I originally joined HHO because I needed support and advice which I didn't feel I could find at that point in RL.

I got the help I needed here. :) I couldn't have done that by keeping it to myself. ;)

Giggling to myself I've gone all through this post and only just realised what RL is, I thought it was another forum you all used and I felt quite left out!!!!
I don't use my real name just in case I post a REALLY stupid question or response to a post, and someone recognises me and then has written proof of how stupid I am 😄😄😄(well to be fair it has already happened a few times) , hopefully no one I know has recognised me yet.
I have made one face to face friend through the forum but she lives miles away and doesn't know anyone else in my area thank goodness ha ha😄

Oh and I think I'm relatively inoffensive so I'm not too worried about upsetting people, and I wouldn't say anything on here that might upset people deliberately😜

Wouldnt take a massive amount of googling to find out who I am. Idid used to post under my first name but forgot my password and hho never sent me the email reminder I kept asking for. The

I did have my name on here and then I decided to change it as I was having a hard time at my previous yard and I knew there were people who most likely came on here at the yard so decided to change :)

I'd post under my real name, but I do like being a bit anonymous. I frequented the horsey forums for a long time using my real name (BHS, Tackroom Gossip era, going back a few years!)
But these days owning a tb called Slumdog I'd probably be pretty easy to find anyway lol :)

I do often wonder if we have any 'famous' riders on here hiding!

I use my real name. But that is because I wouldn't say anything on here that I wouldn't say to anyone's face :) plus I have nothing to hide about myself and I regularly embarrass myself off of the Internet so it makes no difference :)

I am fine about it, and do. The f stands for Francis. I use this handle on all forums I post on.

The advantage of using my real name is that it makes me consider what I write quite carefully, and so I tend not to write things that I wouldn't say to someone's face 'in real life'. Keeps me on the straight and narrow (mostly). :)

ETA: AmiRobertson - snap! That is uncanny.
