hacking down country lane, with friend - both of us wearing hi viz ..... some eejit speeds past on his bike, lifts his visor and shouts "Get back to the *********g fields".

A biker more than anyone else should understand how vulnerable you are as a road user. What an idiot.

Yes, id be inclined to report it.

As a horse rider and a bike that is down right rude and I must say unusual. I tend to find bikers very polite around horses as a rule. You always get one stupid exception though!

Most definitely report, most cyclists are aware of the dangers of this kind of behaviour, and take appropriate action, the few eejits who don't need to be reported and where possible dealt with. Our local police have asked that this type of incident is reported, following an incident involving a young horse, a pillock on a bike and an air ambulance. Luckily the rider survived, but sustained numerous injuries, including a broken pelvis.

It's an education issue, I've met so many non horsey people who don't realise all those fields next to the roads actually belong to somebody and we don't have a right to ride on them. They don't understand why we're on the road when we "have all that countryside to ride in". Doesn't excuse his behavior though. I guess it might count as a road rage incident?

I am so tempted to write a witty reply regarding many things but I know many Bikers and wouldn't want to tempt fate. All of the ones I know wouldn't be so stupid either because we live smack, bang in Farming Community.

If you got his reg number, I would report him because next time he may scare someone who may end up in dire circumstances, someone on a youngster or a child on a pony, you reporting him and him receiving the ticking off may stop him from being more stupid (and dangerous!) in future. Sometimes what starts off as a gobful of language can turn into revving and idiocy.

Well, good luck if you do decide to report, as I doubt the police will do anything about it. Last year I phoned the police to report a dangerous car driver who would frequently over take cars on blind corners (narrow country roads) and speed through 30 mph zones in villages. I saw him most days when I drove to work and saw several near misses. I got his number plate and phoned the police (on the local number) to complain about him. They said they could do nothing about it, as they said I could just be an ex girlfriend with a grudge! If there were 2 of you who witnessed the motorbike you may get further, but I really doubt it. Sorry.

Yep, I'd report him. The police might not do anything, but not reporting it guarantees they won't. I'd be even more inclined to report if you see him around regularly.

Yes, as I said he was going at some speed - and actually had to swerve to miss a young girl with a baby in a pram before he got to me (country roads no pavement and blind corner, she shouted like hell, naturally, but was some way away from me) - hence him probably being peed off and then taking it out on us. If I'd have been on my Tb the results would have been very different today, I expect.

I think I will report it to the police non emerg line. My reasoning being: if it happens again and someone gets his number plate the police may be more likely to do something which then may save lives. I shall also report it to the bhs so that the incidents are logged to add to the statistics, without which, nothing ever gets done.

Thanks all.

You have it exactly right, if you insist on reporting and it being recorded, he is much less likely to get off with any future incident as he wont be able to say it was a one off or that the victim was mistaken as he wouldnt do anything like that.

Being abusive and threatening to a class of vulnerable road user (pedestrians or horse-riders) is definitely reportable in my book.

This person is not a "Biker" ,just a prat with a bike. I find real Bikers to be among the most polite and considerate road users towards horses.A few years ago while hacking on a busy country road ,a Biker passed wide and slow and went on to the road junction ahead and waited for his friend. The friend didnt slow down much and I had a ringside seat watching the first rider give him a right telling off , lots of arm waving and pointing at the offending rider and back at my horse.

Most motor cyclists understand the term vulnerable road user only too well. They also tend to know what damage it does to hit the road. The majority of them do not want half a ton of horse landing on them and their bike  The ones who pass badly tend to be young kids (often not old enough to legally ride the bike on public roads/tracks) who have yet to work out the dangers. I always do thumbs up when bikers pass us wide and slow, as they can't hear shouted thanks.

A couple of yeaes ago i was riding home and a biket rried to over take me, was a bit too close and spooked my mare who took off for home!! He proceeded to ride alongside me (terrifying said horse) it took much shouting and eventual arm waving from me before he buggered off...which did not help! Mental....

As OP's have said this is not a real biker - in fact an idiot on a bike. So report it - the police may not be able to do anything (on this occasion) but if they don't know about these things how else can they take any measures against it?

Most bikers understand all to well how vulnerable they can be on the road and are most considerate of horse riders (my husband is a biker and although his horsepower is mechanical his experiences and riding style mirror my own - looking ahead, checking the road ahead for danger etc, and we often share tales of inconsiderate road users).

I would be careful how you word a complaint op. If he was actually speeding past, you wouldn't get chance to hear idiot comments, he'd be going too fast to hear. I think I know what you mean- idiot on bike not slowing down enough & shouting abuse. But reporting it as speeding implies he was over the speed limit, which he can prove he wasn't if you say you heard him. Then it puts your side of the story into question.
And I agree with everyone else, bikers are usually great, even the young lads & possibly illegal dirt bike riders. Can only think of one that's not been, & that was some inbred teens on a bridleway.

Definitely report it. I am a class A Klipe! Due to the prats on bikes round here I will HAPPILY report them - and as the officer I spoke to one day said, the more reports they get the better. Most forces actually have a team that targets nuisance/bad bikers. And I seem to recall that they are now also taking a more dim view on bad manners/habits/general driving and not just on speeding.

He sounds like the kind of biker that is the type to over take huge lines of traffic then get arsey when he has to pull in sharply to avoid an oncoming lorry, or overtakes on a roundabout, kicks cars and just generally thinks he rules the road........can you tell I pass a lot of these daily!

I hate inconsiderate road users. I am a driver, rider, cycist and if OH has his way motorcyclist. And I do hope that makes me a nice driver......

Exactly this. Most motorcyclists are very good when meeting horses. The other thing you could do is write letters to your local motorbike lesson centres, perhaps they could educate their students - that would be the best way to get them to understand early on.

Yes but both report it separately.

From recollection there have to be a minimum of 3(?) individual reports of a dangerous driver from horseback before they will go and have a word with the drive.

Make sure you don't exagerate though, only state the facts.

Was thinking the same. As a biker as well as a rider I would be surprised if OP could have heard what the biker was shouting if they were travelling at speed. with a full face helmet it would muffle speech, regardless of whether visor was lifted.

There's speeded and then there's passing horses a bit quicker than you would like (and then it's a personal preference on what is an acceptable speed for vehicles overtaking you and your horse. for example, I regulary wave people on who slow down too much when they see me. I would much rather people pass with a good distance between me / pony at a 30mph than crawling past at 5mph closely, prolonging the time car is near the horse. But that is just me:) )

Go in person to the police station and report it. Ask for an incident number as this will ensure it is recorded in to the sytem. Also report it on www.horseaccidents.org.uk as this allows details of incidents to be extracted from the system on a precise area basis and provide valuable statistics on incidents with horses in a specific area.

Did you take the reg? If not u can't expect the police to do anything and if you did its your word against his so they are unlikely to do anything. It depends how busy they are! I'd just ignore it and be thankful your horse didn't react too much. Unfortunately there are idiots on the road who don't think about the consequences of their behaviour but with all the budget cuts the policing isn't like it used to be anymore.

Some people these days how would they like it if you had done it to them?? I hope he didnt spook the horses and yes definatly report before someone if not himself gets hurt! :)
