Hi all,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news and I really hope that i'm wrong!

Up at the yard this morning we got on about weather, clipping, rugs etc and nearly every one (barring me) have heard that this coming winter is forcast to be the worst for 30 years!! I thought that last year was bad and haven't heard any thing myself about this. Just wanted to see if any one else had heard this?

I hope you are going to feel really guilty because you have just made me cry! ;) :(

Shssshhhh Don't say it again! Delete the thread! it never happened!

It is going to be sunny and 19 degrees in November! :D Say this aloud 10 times :D

Balibee- I feel really guilty I'm so sorry, But hopefully you will get to shout at me in 6 months for getting it wrong!! Fingers x'd.

3beasties - Gutted, I was hoping that they were wrong! best be digging out the thermals.

This happens every year...there's no fun or drama in talking about a winter that is going to be mild! Is too early to tell yet! :p :)

Well, you all have plenty of time to get well and truly prepared then don't you?

Winter is going to happen, like it or not, wet, cold, snow, whatever. The only way to avoid it is to move somewhere else.

Perhaps, (oh who am I kidding?) the councils will have more equipment and supplies laid in this year and the country won't grind to a halt as usual.

Wow, I've never seen those before! May just have to invest :D!! Tried the floating ball trick and it kinda works until there's loads of frost/ice lol

Use a small axe or pick to break ice (mind eyes) rather than anything else, much easier. Dump the ice and re-fill with hot water (not always practical)

How can they know?

Must say I'm not so impressed with autumn, which is usually lovely!

Re frozen water buckets, we found raising them off the floor a few inches on a block of wood/slice of straw, and then wrapping them in a "bank" of straw worked well when the temp got to -17 in Jan last year. Otherwise they were almost solid an hour after we filled them! At one point the water in the stables and inside the house froze up, so we had to go down to the stream to fill buckets! We were considering the old system of taking them to water four times a day!

Hope its not as bad as last year, well not for as long. Although it did get rid of the mud for a while!

i wish i could see into the future, i am not worried about rain or snow, but i am worried as one of mine is 31 turning 32 is it fair to have to keep in for days on end, the yard being to icing to move on

oh he is well etc has a bit of arthritus but is still very perky, but does stiffen up as you would expect when not moving about much

if we have prolonged weather like we had this year is it really fair to put him through that?

if i could find out that would be great

how is anyones crystal ball?

I don't really believe HOW they (weather peeps) can forcast our weather for that far ahead... but, if they are right, I don't/won't mind. I perfected the art of ice breaking in the trough well, the field has lovely natural shelter and more importantly I can walk to see them, so don't have to skid about getting the car out....
The only draw back, is actually getting the supplies in, family and horsey as we live in the middle of no-where and do rely on the car... I just have to plan ahead - well ahead, and some might say thats not my strong point!
((I wonder if my mondeo is better in snow/ice than my old peugeot?))

I think I must be the only person in Britain who actually thought last winter was quite good! I turned mine out in the snow as the yard surface became really slippery. They all seemed to love it and did really well. I wasn't as keen when it all melted and the mud arrived but I loved the snow and cold. I'd much rather it be very cold than very wet!

This is one of those occasions I really REALLY hope that the forecasters have got it wrong. Worse than last winter. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

I have to say, I think it is going to be a harsh one. The berries are out on the trees and bushes way early, which is often a sign that it's going to be a toughie. Also the general trend the past 2 years has been for very harsh winters, I think its likely that this one is going to be pretty similar and am preparing as such!!!

I loved the snow last year, it was my kind of winter tbh. Still had turnout every day - mucking the stables out onto the ice worked a treat, although looked a bit of a mess :D

Not listening....lala la la la
Seriously though, other than being unable to ride if we get 3 foot of snow, why do we always worry about how to cope. Go to the south of France and see if they all stop and hole up after a foot of snow! They get out their snow chains and its business as usual! The kids get thier ski's out and those too small are towed on sleds by parents. The shops always have supplies, nobody panics and buys everything in sight, with no hope of using it all in thier lifetime.
I think we are a bunch of wusses quite honestly! (now where did I leave that brochure for the west indies....)

Yeh have to agree, I dont mind cold but its wet and windy thats a pain. Although last years snow was was a bit harsh as couldn't get horses to field as had to cross car park but with all the ice was too risky. Also my then yearling, had a pulled shoulder and was not allowed out till all ice had gone wich resulted in him being in for 4-5 solid weeks. Understandably it blow his brain and even skipping out round him was life threatening!!

I quite like the cold and snow

, only had one day where they couldn't get out at all, every other day was fine! it's the wind and rain I hate! My horse has grown an abnormally large coat for this time of year which he didn't at all last year, I know that's about daylight hours etc but I can't help but wonder if he knows something I dont!

Another one who will cope with the cold, but please, not all that snow again. Our yard develops a crust of ice and it's that which causes our problems.

I have to say though, I think we've been on a run of warm winters and maybe the trend is going back to cold and snowy winters. OH says that last years amount of snow was normal when he was a kid. I can't comment as I don't hail from Yorkshire....
