WWYD? Laminitis advice

I hope he carries on improving, things certainly sound more positive now & he looks like a happy chappy - always a good sign in my eyes. Well done in making a frightening decision, it certainly seems to have been the right one for him.
 
FC I'm so sorry to read this, only just caught up you two definitely didn't deserve that :(.
Just wondered if you might be able to boot to give him a bit more relief or whether bed wise should be sufficient.
Sadly although you can make changes through trimming true recovery only really happens as the damaged laminae grow out and a better connection comes down. I am a bit surprised that your trimmer didn't think he was worthy of dropping something and coming asap, that's awful in my book.

I am just waiting to have a proper chat with the vet and farrier again, but we are looking at putting Imprints on him maybe. He seems to pack the bedding in really tight in his feet and every vet and farrier so far have said thats fine. I'm still a bit dubious about not booting etc but hes improving so I'm a bit wary of rocking the boat now.
 
If he is struggling comfort wise I would certainly consider the imprints, I remember blackcob having them put on her mare and it made a rapid difference.
 
Depends on his weight - the farrier who dealt with mine said the imprints were too flexible to give him the necessary support. He did fit heartbars which I have to admit did get him out of trouble. After 8 months and the farrier saying he would need them for life I took the decision to go with boots and pads, and it was the right one - his feet have never been better. I can trim as often as I want to reduce flare and improve the breakover and he gets pressure not only on the frogs and bars but the soles as well, to beef them up.
 
I know it was explained to me when he was trimmed why he wasnt getting imprints then or why boots were a no but I was just so stressed and upset I cant remember what was said. I got a second opinion from the farrier the new yard uses who does untold amounts of remedial work. He thinks they are the way to go, but he hasnt seen the xrays so who knows. Definitely something to go through with everyone next week
 
So pleased to hear there is some improvement, quite honestly I don't know how you both coped with such an awful roller coaster ride.

I hope Frankie continues to improve and the vets and farriers carry on listening and explaining.

That's great that he's improving. Bet you've aged 10 years!
My big (obese - nearly 700kgs) hunter went from wearing dental putty pads into rx therapy boots with pads made from a gardening kneeling pad. Very good support.
 
Its been awful! I felt like I was cracking up at one point. I honestly didnt think he was going to make it and felt horribly cruel for allowing it to go on while he was suffering. I'm feeling much more confident now and much less bitter about all the enormously fat, underworked, overfed horses I see daily that dont get laminitis. Seeing him so radiantly happy makes it all much easier. He loves box rest and would stay in forever more so long as the food kept coming :lol:
 
Glad to hear that he is so much happier and hopefully he has now turned the corner. One of my horses would much rather spend his life on box rest - in fact given how accident prone he is it is likely that he will get his wish! It does make like much less stressful when they do well on box rest.
 
Your horses x-rays are very similar to mine when he came down with lami, he was in such a state that morning that I really didn't think he would come home if i'm completely honest. The vet was really honest with us about him, and he was also suffering from EMS, basically rehab would be a long road for him but they were optimistic that he had a good chance. He had his shoes removed, lilypads on and was given months of complete box rest, with weekly vet visits to monitor him. He was lame from months before coming sound and only then was he allowed to start walk work. He did come sound and he did really well, but he was a tricky case to manage, he was extremely sensitive to changes in the grass and by that I mean an extra 10 minutes out made him footy. I was at a yard which looked after the grass very well and it was sometimes too sweet and rich for him so I completely kept him off it and massively upped his exercise, walker in the morning and long hack in the evening.

I did notice also ladyinred had advised feeding cinnamon, this is something i did and i'm not sure if that worked or it was a combination of things but he did get better and he did lose a lot of weight. So it cant be a bad thing, I used to buy off bulk off ebay.

Things do sound better and you do just have to give the why mine thing because it will just drive you nuts .
