I'm thinking out loud I suppose, but would apperciate advice or oppinions. Currently I have both my horses on DIY livery at a big yard with a large sand school, nice open stables, secure tack room, turn out in a large herd usually 24hour in the summer with turnout in a 'trashed' field for the winter, downsides are the cost £31.50 a horse (going up 10% at the end of the month and every 6 months thereafter) plus £3.50 a week to keep my trailer there. Plus we have to buy the YO's big bales of hay which vary in quality to say the least, or buy small haylege bales in a £5 a pop, he will not allow large deliveries from other sources. Anyhow all this was bearable and outweighed by the good options plus my horses have been happy.

Then the weather came and my horses were in for 3 weeks solid, some were allowed out during the day but the YO made this decision on a daily basis at around 10am when I'd been at work for 2 hours! I feel uncomforatble asking others to turn out for me as my young horse can be unpredictable on the ground, and by the end of it all I felt punished for having a job!! Also some new people have come to the yard with an army of kids and its utter chaos unitil about 7pm silly things seem to be happening regullary altho so far none of my property or horses have been directly affected.

Anyway there is the potential to move to the yard where my instructor keeps her horse, turnout there is allot more consistant, her horses have been in there stables for 2 days since last august, altho they don't have 24hour turnout in the summer, you can order what you like forage wise so could get the bigger cheaper bales of haylege, there is a large indoor mirrored school, its slightly cheaper, £30 a week a horse hacking is the same as its five minutes down the same road, my horses would be together but in a separate paddock as there only my trainers horses as the other liveries so its super quiet. Only things holding me back are enclosed small stables, same size as now but don't have the bars between boxes and the fact that I won't be able to have lessons with my instructor on the premises because of insurance, but could hire a school nearby. I'm very tempted ....

go for it. i work and had my two horses on diy ass at £45 each per week. they were meant to be turned out for me every weekday. i would get there about 4ish from work and they were out but could not catch them. turned out YO was turning them out just before i got there as she knew my times.

I'd go for it ! Sounds like bedlam at your current yard!

I think in your heart of hearts you have made your decision and are looking for reassurance. The new yard sounds like it could work well for you assuming you can get to an alternative arena for your lessons. Hope you get sorted.

id speak to yo about your concerns over kids and damage and turnout situation, also about the quality of the hay she provides, our yo provide absolute cr*p hay and straw (complete with black mould) all horse owners clubbed together and had a delivery of small bales of hay, and we will prob do the same about straw come winter even though these things are part of the livery, livery costs £82.50 per month and its diy. if yo doesnt listen then move to be honest sounds like complete peace at the new yard!!

Go for it.... I have just moved for a similar reason, lack of winter turnout and limited summer turnout, not what the arthritic horse needs really.

Swapped nice yard/people, indoor school and hacking on doorstep for lovely yard, not many people, 24/7 turnout all year but no school and hacking a bit further away.

Best thing i have ever done!!

Persoanlly id move! Kid on the yard are never fun to deal with-luckily 90% of the ones on our yard have jsut left-YES!!!!!

Even if you do have to hire a school its not that bad!

Thank you for all the replies, I think you're probably right about me making up my mind, I will go the new yard this weekend and speak to the new owner about my needs, I feel a little sad about leaving my current yard but unfortunately things are detriorating quickly and I don't think it'll be long before something will happen and I'll regret not leaving while I had the chance.

If it was me I would be moving, but it does sound as though you have decided that and just want to reassure yourself that you are doing the right thing and you are...... Good luck.
