OK now I'm having a real dilemma...

I am currently stabling my ned at my OH's dads place, lovely setting, 30acres land, 4 stables/tack room/hard standing up by the house, lake, summerhouse, no school, a fast road to ride down for 15mins to access bridleway. No other company for me, 2 donkies for horse. All FREE.

SO I am considering moving him back to old yard, with Floodlit School, 200acres off road riding, direct access to Bridleways, old friends, numerous horses. £27 per week.

SO the PRO's and CON's:

Current Location Pro's:
* No turnout Restrictions
* Lovely Setting
* Own Tack Room
* 5 mins from home
* Can take dogs down with me
* FREE

Current Location Con's:
* No-one to 'help' if needs be
* Lonely
* Have to look after Donkies
* No School/lights to ride in field
* Can only ride at weekends - at certain times due to fast road
* Have to announce/ask permission for visitors as someones home
* They use my hay/straw for other animals
* Difficult to get anyone to deliver straw/haylage - miniumum orders only
* Have to muck out into bin bags and go to dump once a week with them
* HAVE to let dog out and out away when get there/leave

Old Location Pro's:
* Help if needed
* Floodlit School
* Off Road Riding
* Access to Bridleway
* No Donkies
* Muck heap
* Onsight Straw/hay/haylage - or enough people to get order from outside
* Friend with Horsebox!
wink.gif

* Alarmed Tack Room

Old Location Con's:
* MONEY £27 a week
* £1 an hour for SChool lights (in discussions)
* T/O restrictions can be imposed
* Further from house - only by 5mins.
* Yard politics
* Restricted space for 'stuff'/'equipment

The main reason for me considering moving is not being able to ride.. I'm really keen to get on and do some schooling with boy but just can't unless I do it at weekends.

What would you do?

Stay where you are. I know in winter it's a slog having horses at a private yard with little facilities, but every penny counts when you're trying to cut costs.

[/ QUOTE ]The problem being chick is that in summer all I can do is ride in field as after work the roaad we are on is used as a cut through and is LEATHAL .. so wouldn't even contemplate riding down there.

I think I remember when you moved to the present yard( LOL if my memory has got it wrong!)
Why did you leave the old yard?

[/ QUOTE ]I moved because the opportunity came up for me to move horse to OH's dads which seemed wonderful... also as they wouldn't allow dogs at yard but have now changed their mind and actively encourage it!

Where is the horse happiest? I had a similar situation but not regarding money. I was on a private yard where the owners were non riders but owned a horse and shetland. Their horse was only ridden at weekends but their daughter. The yard was the most fantastic place ever. Every facility to myself. Menage, good grazing excellent stables/tack room. Ramped tracked machine foir disposal of muck etc etc. However my youngster and their mare beacme insperable, dangerously so. He would rear if brought in on his own and whould never settle in the menage as he was panicing as to where she was. I moved him earlier this year to becoming preganant and I thought I might need the suupport of a larger yard; to a much larger yard (still with menage) but facilities not as perfect. My horse settled fantastically and is now lovely and calm. I can bring him in on his own and he just falls asleep whilst I groom him! I haven't been able to ride due to pregancy but I have done from groundwork and he was fantastically calm and concentrated. I even carried out loose jumping which I would never have dreamed of before. I wished I'd moved him ages ago!!

Then what are you waiting for??

No point having a rideable, fit horse that is just a feild ornament!! Or a wonkey companion!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with this!

There is always a problem with yard politics and stuff, but I wouldn't be without company and help if needed (and to be able to help out, too). I'd hate being on my own.
Plus I think horses really need other horses ideally.
And not being able to ride out if that's what you like doing, and having a busy road to face, would be awful. As is no manege for schooling, if you have the choice to have one.
Combined with the difficulties with the hay/straw, and mucking out, I would say definitely move back.

Mainly facilities. Plus your on your own and that road sounds awful.

[/ QUOTE ]I thought it would be manageable - times etc but it isn't, it's a 40 road but people seriously drive 70 down it - sharp corners and power off from them.. it's sheltered by trees so almost a 'hollow' so visability not great

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks babe... this is exactly my point... what is the point in having a horse if I can't ride him.. ESPECIALLY as he has now had 18months off and now is fitting fit and ready and willing to go... he really enjoyed his schookling lesson we had!!

[/ QUOTE ]Ahh glad yours is now settled.

My boy settles anywhere!!

He LOVES the donkies he is with but is happy to come away/in from them at night/to ride/to be pampered.

One thing is I do think he misses being a horse with horses... Donkies loon around but not the same as he used to with the other horses

[/ QUOTE ]As said above M_M he has the donks but I do think he misses being a horse with other horses... he's such a loving and friendly boy - he would usually graze the same blade of grass as a 'friend' yet now him and the donks are close but still at a fair distance.

I would move.

Company, help and decent riding are the most important things to me.

[/ QUOTE ]Tis the riding... I speak to my old yard compardrés all the time.. but its not the same as being there and asking a favour!

EDS: What does E think about it?

[/ QUOTE ]He is a bit miffed.. can't see the issue until I spelt it out in HIS language.. "E it's like youhaving your 12 guns and not having anywhere to shoot them - you'd pay to go elsewhere right?"

*ahem* he's not uttered a word since!!
grin.gif

I just don't seem to get the time to enjoy my pony... I'm always rushing as have the donks to do!!

Always the right way to persuade them... K kept telling me off for still looking in jewellery shop windows when he'd bought me my lovely engagement ring... until i pointed out to him, he has a fine pair to look at whenever he likes but i don;t stop him admiring other womens boobs... he was speechless and then rather sheepishly agreed that he couldn't argue with that logic!

Anyway, move back to the other yard and enjoy your riding chick, thats what you have a Jags for!!!!

I would move for the fact its always nice to have people around and to help if you can't make it, ridding in the eveings is a must i don't no how i coped before!!

If you can afford the additional £117/month I would move personally. You arent going to spend more than £4/week in lighting the school, and you are already expending money for hay/feed so you wont have to account for that.
You have 6 Pros for your current yard yet 9 Pros for your old yard - so for me that speaks for itself.
Plus you will enjoy the company of others, although it is nice to be independant it can get lonely I guess.

Regarding the less space for your stuff, eBay what you really, really dont need thus making some money!

[/ QUOTE ]Actually my mistake it was £29 a week.. so £125 a month. Which I can afford.

[/ QUOTE ]Very true plus me and a friend would share the school so lighting only half!

Would OH's dad be receptive to you sharing the facilities/donkey care? Having kept horses at home I would hate to go back to a yard, but being on your own has its drawbacks. When you hack, do you make sure someone knows how long are you are going to be and where you are going? I would stay put and get a radio personally, in fact I would willingly pay to have a place of my own!!
