Yard manager telling me lies. WWYD?

I'm with the pots idea he can keep them with your horses stuff. If all else if good I would try and stay as it's a struggle to move and there are far worse rip off yards believe me

Agree with all of you but they're genuinely conscientious about everything - not sure why they're taking this stance on the supplement. How do I say though that I've basically being checking up on you cos I don't trust that you're feeding my horse. Especially as I've directly asked them and they've lied to me.

Are you there everyday? Can you not just make the feed up for them to give and add the supplements yourself?

I make up the feeds at the yard I work at and I must say every horse has about 3 supplements and it takes ages, much longer than the chaff, nuts, blah blah bit. Of course I still do it, as does YO on the days I don't work as it is a part of the contract, and just common sense and the right thing to do.
I cannot imagine any circumstances when a YO would make the decision not to feed them and then lie about it...totally bizarre! I text owners to tell them if they are getting low, and also tell them if the horse doesn't like its supplements and isn't eating them it is then up to the owner to instruct me what to do.

Who actually buys the pot of supplement?.If you buy the pot then surely you know how long it should last and how many you should be using. Most pots last about a month so if you are not being asked to provide or pay for a pot at least once a month or however long it should be, then it gives you a good reason too speak to the YO about how come you haven't had to replace or pay for more and say to him that after what happened before he is actually feeding it?If he says no then you tell him as someone else said that its on vets advice and does he want the vet to ring and speak to him.Just try and stay calm but firm.

No, not there everyday. There's a table with the supplements on, including the ones he gives to his horse. He makes all the feeds, so no, the pots and self-administration wouldn't work.

I buy it. That was the slant I kinda hinted at - is it time to buy a new pot. I knew dam well I didn't need to cos I knew the tub hadn't been touched.

I know, I get it, it's hard when everyone wants a bit of this and a bit of that! But there's got to be trust that the YM is doing what they say they're doing. Gaaaaaah! I'm going round in circles!

I would talk to him saying the horse doesn't appear to be reight, and has he gone off the supplements again. If he is the YM, are there other staff/an owner floating about? Sadly I have come across this sort of thing all to often with people on full livery, you often find the supplements disappearing down the throat of someone elses horse!

I'm 100% sure that this isn't happening.

Well if that's the case you really should just politely say that you are really concerned that the supplement is not being used as it should,it is lasting far longer than it should and you are getting concerned as to why. When I ran our yard I would also let owners know when got about a weeks worth left or not eating it etc.I know you said that everything else is fantastic but I have to be honest and say that however good somewhere is,if not giving a supplement continually even after you have already said something is happening then I would really have to consider whether I wanted to stay there.Trust is a massive thing,if you really trusted them then you wouldn't be questioning it.On this occasion it's a supplement-what if it was antibiotics or painkillers?.

They were so diligent when he needed bute.

This seems particularly belligerent of your yard manager to me. You are the owner, and if you provide and instruct YM to give the supplements, they should be given. No questions. Different if you were instructing to give your horse something harmful, but not his call to question a supplement that is in your opinion of benefit. He is providing a service to you.

I really don't know what you want to hear. Only your YO knows why he's totally ignoring your instructions. So ask him!

I know! I said before, I'm going round in circles! I'm grateful for all the opinions. It just gives you a bit of time and space to think through the approach to take. Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond - it's appreciated.

How strange. Seems a very antagonistic thing for someone to do. How is your boys breathing?

Could the YO be allergic to something in the ingredients? Having problems opening the tub?

Oh dear I would really struggle in your situation too OP! I think the first thing I would look for is any sign whatsoever of respiratory distress or issues in your horse. If you do see any you can start the conversation from there and ask to increase the amount of supplement that he gets. I definitely would struggle with the 'you lied to me' approach and would try most things before I got to that - because that is likely to deteriorate your relationship with the YM. Do hope you get it sorted!

I wouldnt leave over this but I would try the polite route, I'd say that I would have expected to be ordering another tub of supplement by now and could 'we' revisit the doseage instructions to be sure the horse is getting what he needs

If the horse has had bad problems in the past you could allude to vets visits etc just to press home the importance

I hesitate to say it but has the horse been suffering from lack of the supplement? if the YO is very experienced they may be doubting the need for it and think its a fuss over nothing - of course you pay the bills and should call the shots but perhaps there is some reasoning behind the YO's actions especially if they take the utmost care over the rest of their tasks

I was wondering that. Maybe he doesn't rate the supplement and thinks he's saving you money by not giving it to the horse. He could be the sort who thinks he knows better than you what your horse needs.

Having to confront someone is horrible especially if you're not that sort of person but if your horse's health suffers in the long term from the lack of supplement you'll feel even worse.
Politely say you know you have asked before but the amount of supplement remaining hasn't changed and is there a problem you should know about? I wouldn't mind betting he just can't be bothered to add it!

does sound like he thinks either this supplement or possibly all supplements are a waste of time.
you could either go down the route that horse must need more as its not working as well as it was or vet asked to increase it as pollen season means horse will need more

This might sound silly, but is the yard owner absolutely clear as to which is your tub of supplement? Could he be feeding something else in error? There must be 20 odd tubs of supplements in the feed room at my yard and it would be easy to confuse some of them!

He's crystal clear!

Get some plastic bags and make all the feed for the week yourself, that way the yo has only got to tip the feed out into a bowl x

That's not how the yard runs. It's full livery. The YM feeds am and pm. He lays all the buckets out and goes along putting the right feed in each one. It works well and is a good system. If only he'd put the supplement in and not lie to me!

His breathing could be improved :-(. YO defo not allergic or having probs opening tub.
