yard owners insisting on cash?

All my liveries pay by cash as do our cat clients this is nothing to do with tax evasion as every single penny is accounted for. This is the reason we only take cash now a few years ago we got £1578 worth of bounced cheques just after xmas liveries included and it took solicitors letters and small court claim to get it back so now we dont do it. We had a livery go into the bank with our bank details and try to take money out of our business acccount so we will not be doing that again there are lots of lovely liveries out there and they are wonderful but there are also a few devious ones aswell. #tjey get an itemisec bill every week will everything thing in it we keep a copy on the computer and a paper copy, paper copy goes with banking details and monthly cd it out in with these aswell triple checking and never had a problem yet our accountant loves us.

Even if it is tax evasion, which I doubt, that is none of anyone else's business but the taxmans. Just get a receipt.

I prefer to pay by cash simply so the greedy banks make less profit.

Never ask for a receipt, as someone else said, if I can't trust my YO (saddler, farrier, EDT, instructor etc,) I wouldn't be giving them my custom in the first place.

Yep apologies for that- I am surprised you are only the 2nd person to mention it!! I did mention earlier on that oops I meant evasion ;)
Tax invasion not a good thought at all!!! :D

Sorry to be the 3rd person to mention it, but it did make me laugh on a very dull afternoon! I know it wasn't intentional, but thanks for the giggle!.. Glad you've got the payment sorted :)

If you are a busy person going to the bank is a bloody pain in the ass ! and I am another one that wants to say "get a god dam life" - yeaze...... are you going to take the local petrol station or sainsburys on because they have big signs saying "we do not accept cheques anymore"

God if you were on my yard I would ask you to leave, you should be ashamed, its tantamount to slander for the whole world to see - I just hope no-one that knows the farmer works out who you are and shows him this thread.

Just pay cash I would do it without hesitation ask for a recipt if you feel the need , but I have no problems with paying cash ,bounced cheque are a real issue for small businesses .

My yard owner insists I pay by cash not by cheque but my mum thinks this is due to tax invasion so we don't know what to do.
Are we within out rights to be able to say no we want to be able to pay by cheque - its doesn't say on our written contract that we can't?
I just can't think of a reasonable excuse to give her other than "well we think you are avoiding tax" ....which may not go down too well!!!

Of course you are within your rights not to pay cash but the YO is within his to say move on then loads of small businesses and bigger ones dont accept chqs.
Why would you refer to their tax affairs , it's got nothing at all to do with you.

GoldenStar we were worried about being caught up in something illegal whether it is any of our business or not - which probably does it make it our business?

A few people through this post have had negative experiences of this and had difficulties and this was our concern.
If you read back you will see the problem has now been rectified anyway :)

You pay cash it's legal tender ask for a reciept if you like ,personally if I was your YO and I read this thread I would ask you to leave I would not want people who thought that about me on my property.

I fail to see how you could get caught up in any ''tax scandal'' of your YO if you don't have any records of payment , seeing that pretty much the only way HMRC gets onto things like that is cross referencing invoices and payments...

Martlin if I knew this stuff I wouldn't be posting this thread :)

Why is not paying your tax somehow not seen as theft? Most people are paid under the PAYE system and have little or no chance to avoid paying tax however low their income but someone who is a small business who has the advantage of paying there tax at the end of the year and then doesn't declare the full amount earned. Thats OK? If you saw someone you thought was shop lifting is that not anyone business, but of course they are only potentaily stealing from a shop tax fraud is stealing from us.
I run a small business and I take in a lot of cash, the banks charge for paying it in and then your charged for taking it out so I tend to pay suppliers in cash but I do want a reciept. And yes folks I declare everything I earn.
I think bank transfer is great and if your paying a month in advance that covers your notice period. We also pay workman by bank transfer as its now almost instant so they know the cheques not going to bounce.

Exactly but OP did not see someone shoplifting she saw someone on the street with a bag and thought she might be going to go shoplifting.
This YO is as likely to be sick of liverys bouncing chqs as they are to be avoiding tax.
