Pictures Yay! Another rug thread! Best rug you ever bought and the worst

Best turnouts - Weatherbeeta takas, I've got one hw and one mw, bought mega cheap in an end of line sale 10 years ago and still in great condition. Also love my rhino wugs, half price from hope Valley saddlery as last seasons colours.

Stable rugs - Weatherbeeta again but 100g jaspers which I find really versatile and fit in my washing machine.

Worst Gallop no fill that leaked from day one and any fleece which just attracts bedding and hair and I have one that generates static and gives me shocks.

Worst: Premier Equine. Additional negative points for the non existent "customer service" about their awful rug.

Best: I bought an original FAL bulldog turnout rug circa 2005. I got it in the sale for £99 and sold the neck attachment in ebay for £45ish so it was a steal. I had a run of 6ft horses and it done all three of them. I sold it in 2010 when I lost my last 6 footer and I'm pretty sure it's still going with the person that I sold it too.

I also bought an Axiom rug from ebay as a "back up" when I ended up with a very underweight TB and I ended up using the Axiom over his Rambo. It kept him so warm, was a great fit and was really hard wearing. I've had an axiom since for current horse, until he outgrew it, and it was a great rug too.

I generally use Shires, Weatherbeeta and Masta and they're all a good fit and hard wearing. Shires are excellent value for money, weatherbeeta comfitec are a great fit and I have the Masta dome neck rug which has stopped all mane rubs the past two winters and heading into its third.
Ohh I’ve wondered about these masta rugs with the funny neck for mine as every winter he ends up with no lower mane. It works then? You’d recommend?

My best rug is a Rambo supreme. Made better by the fact I paid peanuts for it second hand but in mint as new condition. It’s just the most reliable rug ever.
mum worst was a Ruggles! Weird as everyone else really seems to rate them. I do wonder if I had a dud! It seemed to have totally bypassed the waterproofing stage. Seriously I could have sprayed it with a plant mister and it would have soaked through 😩

My friend has 2 Ruggles for her mini. Dreadful things. Leaked from brand new; get very heavy and take for ever to dry. I'm a big fan of Weatherbeeta. Always fit and stay dry.

Weatherbeeta, the old old Amigos and Axiom were/are all good. I also bought a DH Pro 70g TO that only seemed to be available for a couple of weeks that turned out to be a good rug.
Worst-insanely heavy PE T/O that leaked, a DH fly rug, a Swish 100g that leaked like a sieve.

Favourite turnout rugs - my Rambos and Fals. Every single one has been brilliant and years old.
Stable rug - Mark Todd. Going on for 25 years old now and still looks cosy and beautiful. I love that rug. I don't even really stable anymore but am keeping it because I will always associate it with being 11 and tucking my boy into his 'PJs' every night and how delighted I was to have an actual real life pony.

Worst - my poor horses have never, ever had a 0g that didn't leak.

the string vest style anti sweat rug [...] the only time it got worn was on a sleepover when I wore it round to my friend's neighbours

That has made me laugh so much.

It’s not the rug it’s the pony.
as a new owner bought my tough little part Exmoor a very light turnout, because I thought he should be protected from worst of the weather.
Put rug on. Turned pony out. Pony goes to fence finds slightly sticking out nail, rips side of rug along nail. Rug lasted 10 minutes.

Definitely Rambos and Rhinos. Some of mine are probably over 15 years old and still like new. Also love Fal, Bucas and Thermatex. An old favourite rug is a Rhino quarter horse stable rug which goes on over the head. Unfortunately, I no longer have a horse that fits it.
Worst rugs are premier equine which are ridiculously heavy when wet and the no fill one leaks. The fleece from The Big Horse Shop was a total waste of money, it was badly designed and became a bed for the dogs.

It is weird how the same make of rug can vary. I have 2 Shires tempest 50g rugs bought within a couple of weeks of each other and used equally. Both were on horses out in the vile weather Friday and yesterday. One had leaked a little on the back and the other not at all.

I’m rather impressed with my no fill amifgo bravo. Very waterproof and just has a liner added for a bit extra warmth. We have finally upgraded to a rambo but he’s not allowed to wear it yet as I can’t bear to see that much money get muddy!

I have changed to Premier Equine after the Horseware ones manufacture and material quality dropped off and especially when they wouldn't exchange a 6 week old Amigo that began to leak badly.

Second winter now of PE for the horses but the donkeys now have Bucas rugs I love the quality - they fit donkeys wonderfully but never had a pony or horse that they fitted!

Oh yes the old canvas New Zealands....shudders at the memory...and jute stable rugs.....

really? My amigo and weatherbeeta 0g never have-they have to be 1200D though, the 600D all leak in Scottish weather. They can sometimes get condensation in them apparently but haven't had it happen in mine.

Interesting - I've had both of those leak! The Amigo was a Mio so paper thin - leaked almost immediately. The WBs, to be fair, only leaked once they got to about 5-6 years old. No condensation issues with either I don't think.

Amigo mios are really poor in comparison to a standard amigo. I have used both and only the mios ever leaked.

Can I get a recommendation from all you Ph.Ds in rugology (😜) My new boy (not in the pic) is a draft cross - around 16.3 with a very broad chest. Some of my old rugs which are 6’6” and 6’9” do fit him length wise but don’t meet across his chest (the only one which does is a Gallop mac). Which rugs havethe broadest chests? I have bought him one from the Big Horse Shop which is good but just wondered about other makes too.

Weatherbeeta do a specific rug for big horses. I've never used them but I'd they do what they say on the tin... I find their normal range quite wide and a good fit for almost everything thay I've had including current QH

Best: Maxima lightweight turnout w/ standard neck. Tough, waterproof, and a good fit for chunky cobs.

Worst: Maxima fly rug! I have no idea how it's such a different fit to their turnout rugs, but it hasn't fitted anything it's been tried on.

Best: Rambo Wug. She now has one in every weight  but I'd expect them to be great for what they cost.
Worse: Rhinegold thermatex copy thing. Awful fit, awful material, and it's the only rug M has ever ripped. It's now a very expensive cat bed for the Siamese!

Best = Rambo turnouts. My 6’3” ones are now onto horse number four and still going strong.
I love my thermatex too though

Worse = PE - heavy and difficult to handle. Rubbed my TB. Sold on very quickly.
I also find fly rugs difficult. Really hoping new boy won’t need them as I’ve yet to find one that doesn’t rub.

The best is a Rambo Optimo! These are the only rugs that dont restrict my ponys movement. Everything else makes her a bit stilted at best, throttled at worst! I really rate my Rambo Summer Series as well. Its really filled a gap for me. My pony is fully clipped all year round and wears this with and without a liner on and off from early autumn time. I've got a 4 seasons sherpa rug which I was given and I've used it over and over again on varying horses in varying situations

The worst was a PE rug which weighed a ton, was ridiculously huge and pretty much disintegrated!

Really rate all my rhino, Rambo rugs
Many I have had over 15yrs and still excellent. Worst are PE they leak and become really heavy.

Best - PE and Ruggles. I don't particularly like the liner system on the PE ones though, so tend to use Fionns mainly as the stand alone 100, then short term with the liner while the weather is up and down like now, then change to his 200 for the majority of the winter.

Worst - all my 0g rugs (Derby house and Ruggles) leaked this autumn, so I've bought some Fabsil and an going to wash and reproof myself.

Best non turnout - thermatex, weatherbeeta fleeces.

Best rug is my dri-rug, so super duper handy for drying and cooling off! Mine are turned out individually so I like the JHL rugs which are a lower denier than most top brands and these are a nice fit and work really well. I just wish they had clip attachments at the front as buckles are so fiddly.

Worst rug I've ever bought was a brand new MT MW stable. It was cut so high on the neck, so short in the shoulder and so long in the back I used it once and sold it straight away. Which is a bit odd as I love MT and have both HW T/O and stable rugs from them! I also do not like PE rugs, they get so heavy when wet and rub mine really badly.

All my Rambo optimos- have multiples not because that have broken but because I have them on every horse! LOVE THEM

Fit 16.1 tb to 18h+ ISH

Worst ever _ Rhinegold. Leaked after one rainy day & horse soaked through. I have taken this up with Rhinegold who basically told me to P**s off. Never again!
Best Swish Rug. This is very old now & was given to me. It has never let us down

Best for turnout were definitely my Rambo’s. I had made to measure winter weight stable rugs for Amy which were fabulous, but Fal for the others, which were also great. Nice and deep for the 16hh plus boys.
