Yay! It's bran mash time!

no, I think what is being said is that a bran mash is made exclusively with bran and hot water, as opposed to you mixing bran with your other feeds and adding hot water, which is different to a mash.

But what do I know, Im on wine glass #3

I did, but have swapped over to Allen & Pages new Fast Fibre instead so pony can still have a warm mash, but I don't have to faff about with limestone flour etc.

what is limestone flour?

Are you serious?

Anyway, it's a form of calcium meant to balance the calcium:phosphorous ratio of bran.

I would have thought a bran mash was traditionally just bran and epsom salts soaked in hot water as well. I grew up using a bran mash as an evening feed after a hard day out hunting or competing, and wouldn't think too badly of anybody that did the same to be honest, although I think electrolytes would probably be better than Epsom salts I suppose nowadays.

I don't do it anymore though - just add a scoop of electrolytes to the evening feed if they've been working hard.

or is it the chaff vs. alfa that you have picked up on? because Ellie won't eat alfa! Not for the want of trying!

[/ QUOTE ] Well if you want to feed a hot feed you could just add warm water to her normal feed and not bother adding bran (which would be the simplest and best option, IMO). OR you could add the bran AND limestone flour to balance it. (Obviously at Talland they didn't need to add limestone flour because the alfafa balanced the low calcium levels in the bran).

Haven't fed one in years except after a colic and advised by vet. The only thing I was surprised about was how much they seem to love it, tried a bit myself it was effing orrible!

oo thank god - the page has gone the right size again!

TGM - this is what I do. If it's really cold I mix up a little black treacle in hot water and make feeds up with that.

They love it. And is Waaay better than any bran rubbish.

QR Miz Elz- i dont think the quantity of bran is the issue here , it could be one scoop or three scoops, i think the point is that a bran mash is ONLY bran no other feeds mixed through.

thank you.
