Yay! It's bran mash time!

I can't believe people have been arguing for 3 pages over what exactly the definition of a bran mash is!

Fantastic stuff - hey?! I love this place.

Well it took two and a half of them to work out that the OP wasn't actually talking about a proper bran mash!

[ QUOTE ]
No, that can't be right 'cos I mixed self raising flour in, to counteract the lack of calcium....oh.

not argueing, just rectifying incorrect information.

She can really jump - that's what I bought her for - she doesn't really have the length of stride for dressage but will go far SJ.

She's really shortbacked and powerful- great for jumping - not so great for the bucks!

Does it really matter what you call it though?

of course it does, spiral! don't forget: never call a grey horse 'white', a dark brown horse 'black', or a hot-mixture-of-food-with-bran 'bran mash'!

not sure.....

if it was made up as MizElz would and fed to a collicking horse/pony then yes, it might

made up as a bran mash should, then it might not

Well....yes, I would say it matters what you call things - wouldn't you? If I started going on about leaving a bridle on my horse whilst he is turned out in his field, but actually meant a headcollar, would that matter? Surely it matters what you call things

.

Anwyay in answer to the original question - no I would never feed bran mash.

Fair point, Tia - there's nothing worse than when people get the names of horsey stuff wrong! But I dont think the example here is in the same class as headcollar vs bridle - I would say it's a distinction borne of regional lexical difference! Ie. everybody round here that I know - old school and new - will call a mixture of food and bran which has been warmed up 'a bran mash' - though it is quite clear that many do not!

We used to feed the riding school horses on a diet of barley, bran and sugar beet and had no ill effects, not one colic in the 40 odd horses in 5 years. And at work we feed a special type to all the horses on box rest or walking work, its called Impact bran and is meant to prevent impaction colics. It was prescribed by the stud nutrionist who works for a big feed company so obviously some people do find merit in it and our horses are worth a lot of money. I do agree that it is seen to be rather old fashion and I don't use it any more but some professional outfits do with nutritionist's recommendation, so everything in its place.

jeez, guys. surely a "bran mash" is a mash made of bran and water and a bit of epsom salts. any other normal feed with bran in, whether with added hot water or not, is not a "bran mash", cos it's not left to cook the same way a mash is, i think.
do you think we can stretch this one to 10 pages...

i feed a bit of bran occasionally in a feed to certain horses - anything i suspect has an upset tummy, really.
a vet told me that the whole calcium/phosphorus imbalance thing has been hugely blown out of proportion, and he thought that more horses would die of colic from not being fed bran, than would be affected by the imbalance...

hey, i dont care, Ellie gets a what i dub a bran mash, if that is different to anyone elses, then fair play! she loves it, her coat gleams, she maintains weight, is spritely under saddle and doesnt suffer any 'rear end' problems. Its good enough for me! Thank you all, I'm off to bed now!

[/ QUOTE ] I suppose that depends upon what sort of diet it is being compared with. The good things about a bran mash (in terms of preventing colic) are, presumably, it is a fibre source and it is full of water. Surely you can achieve the same with things like soaked beet or soaked fibre cubes
confused.gif
. In fact all my feeds are soaked, on the basis that horses' natural diet - ie grass - is full of water.

Again, you'd probably have balanced the phytate problem with the sugar beet, which is high in calcium

Don't feed bran anymore and what Miz Elz feeds isn't a bran mash ! its like calling pony nuts coarse mix
crazy.gif

Bran massh is bran, boiling water, handful of epsom salts mixed well then covered with a hessian sack to "cook" fed warm .. thats a bran mash adding hot water to other feed just warms the feed up!

I don't feed bran personally, but I know people who do. I think as long as you're not feeding it to youngstock it's probably fine. As others said along with alfalfa or sugarbeet I should think it would be ok.

I think, after 6 pages, we already know that, and unless Mizelz is stupid has gotthe message too

Yes I heard that the other day as well (thirds) ! had to ask what it was though (and now wouldnt admit even if I had known what it was as that would make me sound old)
