Yearling with split up hoof!

Had farrier up today and he can't understand why he has a split up his toe..anyhow he has marked it out next time he comes it should have grown out and not split further if it wont grow out he says he would probably want to put a shoe/plate on him..asked how and he said nailed..has anyone else had this procedure/problem??

I've seen loads of older yearlings with shoes on in racing, and IMO they stop the hoof from developing as it should; it sort of stunts the hoof? That's just my observation, but I wouldn't shoe my yearlings.

The crack should grow out with regular trimming (I'd be getting him done every 4-5 weeks untill it's gone) and using an antibacterial product like 'white lightening' on it. Does he get a vit and min suppliment? You want the horn he's growing to be as strong as possible.

What farrier do you use Charliesarmy? i dont think id be happy having a nailed shoe on my yearling. I also think the crack should grow out with regular trimming. Maybe use a hoof strengthener alongside a vit and mins supp?

Sorry he isnt going to put a shoe on that would be a last resort...its the first time he has trimmed him..and has reshaped his hoof which should start drawing the crack together and should grow out..but if it doesnt he will need a plate to try and protect it....but honestly its a last resort.

I would echo the others. USe a bit of stockholm tar on it for a few days to kill any bacteria lurking in there and then use something like kevin Bacon hoof dressing or cornucrescine from the corronet band down to keep the horn flexible rather than brittle. Also feed a broad spec vit and min supp. This dry weather is really playing havock with some feet!
