Yes it's causing upset at our yard which if we all stick together we are hoping that we can ban the fireworks but my question to hho is How many other Livery Yards out there are holding a bonfire party WITH FIREWORKS??

I have to say if they insist on Fireworks then I'm considering moving horsey to a friends yard for the night.

BL**DY STUPID PEOPLE!!!
our yard is having a BONFIRE party - we can bring sparklers.
I think there would be mutiny if anyone suggested fireworks!

I would be disgusted, the yard owner at my current yard decided to let people dispose of garden waste???? at the top of our yard and set fire to it regularly - this resulted in a vet visit as my horse became very lathargic his breathing became strange when worked and he started rubbing his neck and throat on anything he could get to scratch it! The vet bill was £200 and they couldn't find any infection or problems but when i mentioned the fire she said that could explain the symptoms as there was no other evidence of infection eg discharge ot temperature breathing was ok etc..I was not amused as you can imagine and a couple of days later when i went to turn my horses out i couldn't see the field for the smoke and she expected me to turn them out in it!!! Needless to say i didn't, there wasnt an offer to help move the horses to a new paddock it was pitch black and i was told if i want to move them then go find one!!

We are having a 'NON Firework' party.

Bring booze, ordering in fish and chips from local chippy, hanging around to make sure all our horses are alright with other local and very close fireworks that we have no control over.

Can't believe any YO would have a firework party at a yard ! Personally I think its appauling and selfish behaviour .......

Disco - don't you think moving him to another yard for the night will upset him more? Especially if he can see / hear any fireworks in that strange place...

I kept mine in London for a while, next to a housing estate with plenty of fireworks on Diwali, bonfire night and the two weeks before ... it was the same every year - first fireworks went off (usually whilst we were riding) and some horses spooked a little - you carried on with their routine and they all settled down very quickly.

The stables next door are having a bonfire party with fireworks. I currently have my spooky Thoroughbred on boxrest!! They also said that their only setting off quiet, small ones, humm. Stupid stupid idea!!

My old YO had bonfire parties at her house a short distance from the yard & we had quiet fireworks e.g roman candles that fizz & look pretty but make little noise. No problem. We were all on hand to deal with horses when iodots across road launch rockets over the stables away from thier house!

Do you know...I've no idea if they livery yard will be letting off fireworks but I'm glad you brought this up as I'm going to ask this evening. Besides wouldnt it be a fire hazzard?

My horse used to be kept in a town so fireworks were always close by....not brilliant if you are trying to ride but horses tucked up in a warm stable with hay and a radio dont seem to mind.

I wouldnt worry but would make sure my horse was in bed before it started.

I am just thinking, bonfire, flames, drifting sparks, straw, hay, wooden stables, fire!...call me old fashioned, I just don't think these things mix. Same goes for fireworks, how often do you hear of stray fireworks flying off in the direction they were not meant to, or people do not ground them well enough and they fall over just as they let rip...I may be biased, I hate fireworks and loud noises and I also hate fire so will be staying in

Additional thought too, I wonder if their insurance company is ok with this

Ours aren't particularly bothered by fireworks? Or any bangs in general... comes from people often shooting nearby so they are used to the sounds.

They are not phased by fires either, had a bonfire about 15-20m from the top end of the arena the other week quite a big one too and Blue didn't take one look at it

My YO has a bonfire and fireworks party every year but it's away from the stables but still in earshot of the horses. To be honest they don't seem to get upset by it (and they are mainly TBs and TBxs).

They were far more upset by some of the torrential rain we had in the summer when it hammered down onto the barn roof - to the point that some of the horses were quite hysterical and neighing really shrilly in fear.

Hi DarkHorse, Yes I had thought that too but my head is in such a spin I really dont know which way to turn on it.
I'm definately going to speak to YO about it when I see her face to face which wont be until Sunday - Is this too close to the event to express my concerns?
It's a bit rich because a few years ago (before I kept horsey at her yard) she sent a flyer through everyone's door in the village asking them to notify her of any bonfires&fireworks so she could make arrangements with the horses at her yard!

I'm not sure I'd be thrilled about a firework party 'at the yard'! Come and stay with us
grin.gif
You're only down the road, aren't you? Hopefully the fireworks won't be loud enough to upset our horses - although we have the Vulcan to contend with
grin.gif

TBH, although I wouldn't be that chuffed about it, when I kept my horses at home the people next door used to have firework parties - they would be about 20 feet away from the stables

I never found that it upset the horses - it just upset me as I would panic about fire etc

this is why I love being at a yard near a dual carriageway. No one wants to let off fireworks there because of the road noise! My YO wouldn't be stupid enough to do that though!

Your yard owner sounds like they are a sandwich short of a picnic.

I would also be concerned at the risk of a fire from sparks.

as a yard owner - My Oh and I shoot on our land - we have to to keep the rabbit population under control. All the livery horses just ignore it. Yes there is the initial jump - but then they sort of look at us as though to say - oh god you again!!! Non of the horses are bothered. I have always worked on the basis that they could come across shots, scarers, fireworks at any time so best to just get on with it and desensitise so they can deal with the noise.

In the Millenium new year my horses had a fireworks party about 500yards from their stables - not ideal but the owner of the property would not change, my horses all survived totally uninterested.

I am sure your YO will not let the fireworks off near the stables and will not have a fire in a dangerous place so I personally would not get too distressed about it as you will transmit that to your horse, bed it down with a big feed, large net and possibly a feed ball and leave it to it.

I think it is a stupid idea and would be mad if my YO did that... but my old stables used to have a field 100m down the road where there was a public display and bonfire each year, we went and got a burger then sat at the stables, horses in the field. They cantered round for the first 2 minutes then settled down and were fine.

No fireworks where i keep mine now- but it has happened at old yards/friends yards etc

They have all been done a distance from the horses/hay/straw etc, but still close enough for the horses to hear, and none seemed to mind at all-including many 'quirky' horses.

Last bonfire night, i didnt get back from work till late, so rode my horse in the manege, by this time many fireworks displays in the local area had started, and he didnt bat an eyelid.

im a strong believer that if you are chilled with your horse, they will be chilled with you, and quite possibly him hearing bangs when he was safe in his stable has made him realise theyre not something to be scared of
smile.gif

ETS- the yards i refer to have never had fireworks that go up in the air, just ones you light that stay on the ground, not sure i would be happy about ones that go up in the air...never know where they land and would worry about fires

disco, tell your YO the following.

A riding centre not to far away from me had a firework display for the kids, they were in one of the fields well away from the yard , in fact they wasn't anywhere near the yard as this field was off down a road. However one firework went astray, think the wind might have caught it, it ended up in there dutch barn and nearly burnt the place to the ground. This was many years ago now and i know for sure they lost 2 or 3 horses but it may have been more.
