Sorry - this may be long!
Had horses for 25 yrs, Been at this yard for 3 months, YO is 74yrs old, has hunted all her life and is very involved in the PC, she is very very knowledgeable BUT.....She gets angry at me for turning my horse out with a rug on during this wet weather! Her favourite phrase to me is "Horses are Waterproof you know",

Yes, I do realise this BUT.. basically if the weather is predicted to rain, the rug goes on to keep horse dry so I can ride when I go down after work at 6:45. I only put a very light weight sheet on with no lining. I watch the weather report the night before (and as we all know the weather is constant rain at the mo!)

If it was predicted to be sunny I wouldn't put one on! I need my horse to be dry so I can tack up and go! - Because I work full time there's no option of going any earlier. I havent got time to bring my horse in and wait for her to dry off and I dont hear anyone offering to do so! I compete at weekends so I need to exercise during the week - if horse sodden at 6:45 I cant ride because it's too long to wait for her to even become just damp and by then because of the grey rain clouds the dark is setting in!

None of the other liveries compete and all appear to of succomed to YO views as none go out with rugs on - however as I walk to and from yard I see the horses in the next door fields with their rugs on!
I was determined that this wouldn't get to me it's eating me alive!!!!
What's everyone else doing? Rugs on v Rugs off?

Most of mine are out with lightweights so they stay dry for the owners to ride them. However, if I've already ridden then they can go out naked!
Lightweights are more human convenience, but there should be nothing wrong with you putting them on

Your horse, your business (within reason). If its wet, I tend to put a rug on for the same reason as you. SO long as horse isn't cooking (which in this weather I doubt) there is nothing wrong with a lightweight rug.

its nothing to go with your YO how you rug your horse.

Archie was turned out in his middle weight with hood yesterday and wasnt even particularly warm when he came in. Hes also wearing a MW and hood at night in his stable.

Bloss just wears a LW in the field at the moment, and a fleece rug during the nights.

If the weather gets better then i will change their rugs, but until then they are both fine as they are.

people are waterproof too but we dont all go out naked! Does she not know that if you groom your horse regularly there are insufficient oils in the coat to protect from such weather? My horse has a lightweight rug on 24/7 at the moment - he would be shivering otherwise.

Tell her to bog off! (respectfully, of course!

mine have been sporting rugs since the 24th June, if that helps.

they have had theirs on regardless as the weather is so unpredictable and even in the sun there has been a bit of a breeze which is enough to bring a wind chill factor into play

I'd love to be able to rug Axey up in this weather, but even with a light weight on he gets really hot and sweaty as he's naturally a warm horse.

I've luckily never had to try and ride when he's wet, but I can see where you're coming from, especially if you ride late enough as it is you can't wait for ages for the horse to dry off.

My horses wear rugs as and when they need them.
My TB gets cold easily (she doesn't have proper guard hairs in her coat so isn't that waterproof) so she gets a thicker rug.
My Warmblood doesn't seems to be middling, so she gets a lightweight. My other one grows a good winter coat, and seems to be a 'hot horse' so gets rugged less.
There are other good reasons for rugging - rainscald prevention, keeping them dry and non-gritty so your tack doesn't rub, stopping coats bleaching, fly bites etc.
Is your YO a nudist, perchance

I debated what to do today but didnt end up putting it on. The oldies have them on though but only because its wet and windy.

def on in this weather. stops my bay getting a chill in the winds when shes soaked of course and like you i ride each evening after work and cant afford to wait for a soggy mare to flippin dry!

Just ingore her - its your horse.... Murph has been wearing a LW whilst out during the day and a fleece at night because he is cold. But then he is 3/4 TB!!!

Comments have been made to me that he shouldnt be rugged now, but if he's cold he's cold!! He also started lose weight to so I've had to up his hay .... If he was to get a cold I wouldnt forgive myself! So i just ingore them as long as Murph is happy and warm thats all that matters to me....

Mine is out with a rainsheet and neck cover on, purely so he is dry for when I get down after work to ride.

Like you if I wasnt riding or knew I would have hours to wait for him to dry then I wouldnt bother but its just not practical to stand around for hours waiting for them to dry.

Its your horse, do what you feel best.

Thanks Guys! - I just needed a bit of reassurance!!!

Rug on it is then!

I do like some of your comments!! - "Is YO a nudest"! and "tell her to bog off"/Beeswax!! Ha Ha!!

I'm not rugging up but my horse is only being lunged. If I was riding I might think about it for the same reason as you do.
Tell her to mind her own...

Tell her to f**k off. I do exactly the same as you for exactly the same reason. Also you need to be mindful of rain scold which can occur with the temperature fluctuations we are having at the moment.

Ignore her, she's YO and thats it - Not Owner of Your Horse. Ours are out at night, with rugs on in this weather. They don't have any shelter in their fields, so if peeing down, don't want them to catch cold - so rugs it is, They are NEVER too hot and like you, its' a rain sheet!

Tell her to mind her own............!

Mine have all got LW rugs on and are happier for it. Geriatric YO is from an era where there wasn't the choice of rugs there is now - NZs were green and made of canvas then. Either that or she's landed on her head too many times out hunting. Your horse, your decision.

My old boy is clipped out as he has cushings, he would be freezing in this weather without a rug on. He's had a lightweight on for a couple of weeks now.

A couple of days ago the filet string broke and his rug was in a heap on the ground when I got down to the yard. He was beside himself he was so cold. He seemed to think it was all my fault too ...

It's your horse, you should so what suits you and him not the YO.

I agree with her in the fact i think people rug horses unnecessarily sometimes just because its raining and we feel sorry for them out in it but im the same as some others that if you got to ride your horse after work you have to rug it to be dry enough and also some feel the rain more than others. Im lucky my YO puts my ponies rug on if weather gets really wet in the afternoon so she is dry.

Opps sorry thats probably not helping your mood!

Simply tell your YO its my decision what i do with my horse thank you very much!

Mine is out at night and in during the day, she is wearing a rug at night as she is fully clipped and I ride her in the morning when the yard is quiet.
When is in during the day she doesn't wear a rug, if she is out during the day she goes out without a rug unless it is going to rain.

I do believe people over rug in the summer, I would prefer my horse to be rugless but in the wet weather the rug is needed

I really think that a lot of this has to do with some YO's not understanding that if you work full time you can't bring your horse in to let it dry off before you ride - its all about time. My horse is out naked - but he's only 4 and its not the end of the world if i don't ride him everyday. If he needed to be worked daily I need him dry - so he would have a rug on. To rug or not to rug - endless debate I'm afraid!

hi, it really got nothing to do with her if you rug your horse or not, mine are all wearing LW at the moment the weather is awful. With it being muggy as well in between showers it helps stop them being attacked by the flies.
I know what it like when youve constanly got annoying little comments being thrown at you, especially when you really cant have a go back as much as youd like to
smile.gif

Next time id just say yeah i know but i need to ride and dont like riding her when shes all wet, ruins the tack!!! or somthing like that and let whatever she says go over your head
smile.gif

Just dont let it bother you

Good luck
