YO has closed the school - ideas pls

Is this still going

A month or so back, another livery decided to try join-up in our school, and she blocked off half of it with huge jumps - and just left it like that. Guess who had to take the whole lot down to be able to rid that morning .

I have seen this happen on big yards alot and it does annoy me. Yard managers are very quick to just lock the school rather than confront the individuals involved. It's not fair on everyone else and if they really cared about the yard they would speak to the people involved and sort the root cause.

And sorry to anyone younger but the last 3 yards I have been on it has been the kids who don't bother and if the school gets locked they shrug their shoulders and go and gallop round the fields instead. Meanwhile the adults come after work when it's dark and find they have nowhere to ride.

And what if it happens regularly over a period of time and the culprits never come forward and no one knows who they are. Can easily happen on a big yard if the school is a little distance away. Even on one small yard I was at, kids were riding up from yard down the road which belonged to the same people so technically we were allowed to use each others' school. They were coming up earlier so no one was around and no one saw them. Meanwhile after many threats the school was locked but they didn't care as the other one wasn't.

the only people that do pick up at our yard are the kids-they love hopping off and showing off cos their ponies follow them round like dogs-would love more kids at our yard

On phone so can't quote but..some people have said liveries being treated like kids and also they are paying customers and can't take facilities from them which are included in a contract... Firstly,*somebody* (tho might be more than one) is behaving like a child-an irresponsible, thoughtless, lazy one-clean up after yourself!! Sooo annoying! All those threads with people ranting how annoyed they are that X livery leaves shavings and Y livery leaves a hay trail etc around - times that by a 100 and that's nearly how annoying it is for a YO who sees their without doubt expensive (NO surface or school construction in the history of the world is cheap!)school being abused.. I bet the YO has said several times that poo shouldn't be left in there(tho being told once, max twice, should be sufficient if everyone is adults..) Secondly, unless the contract states the school will be available 365 days a year,it's not really broken is it? (Especially as there's no booking system on yard in question.) Shut for maintenance? It'll need it,if some idiot keeps leaving cr*p in it! I can understand YO's frustration-I would doubt she's done it lightly and is prob sick to back teeth of repeating what she shouldn't need to and at same time, regrets having to do it this way and affect innocent others...but if the snake won't own up (Fgs,just say they forgot, utterly sorry, ensure wont happen again-it's not difficult!) then YO's hand is forced. Anything to do with horses/stables is so expensive and to see it not respected when it's yours and it's entrusted to others (regardless if they are paying customers-they sure as hell wouldn't want to fork out the cost of providing the facilities!) it is heartbreaking and maddening to see. OP,I hope the guilty parted is outed and normal livery resumes!

VERY WELL SAID.

Arena closed for 2 days and you don't know what to do with your time whilst with your horse. I don't always ride every day and I still never have a shortage of things to occupy my time with. I don't think I even ride in (my own) arena twice a month, let alone every night but if I liveried then 2 evenings with no arena access wouldn't register with me, I'd just do other things. Incidentally there's a lot of people (friends/neighbours) who use my arena and I don't think anyone picks up their poops. They probably mean to but forget so I usually do it.

I'm already looking to move but am struggling to find anywhere at the mo. It's been closed because there were droppings left in the school. Don't really want to debate the rights and wrongs of her decision, I know what I think and I also know it wasn't me.

In the meantime, please does anyone have ideas to entertain me and horse for the next few days?

Has happened with my old yard, YO got fed up and padlocked the school. It does penalise the innocent so we'd all clear up regardless of fault. There were no rules until he got annoyed then went mad at everyone. Always some drama because he never laid down rules in the first place.

My old YO did this once, as liveries were not picking up after their horses. Frustrating for those that did, but message received loud and clear.

Taught my yard nothing! A YO should, IMO, be able to enforce rules, organise a rota for the school or make it bookable so that can't happen again.

We aren't going to agree on this are we? there are though of us who pay for the use of a school and chose a certain type of yard accordingly. There are those of who through work cannot assume we will be up every night, hence going onto full or part livery and need to plan ahead. 2 days when someone else has decided YOU wont ride is unreasonable. The school being out of action was a decision on the YO's part, not because the school was physically unusable. My end of the contract is pay the money owed, on time, understand what my responsibilities are and thats it really. Of course I clear up after myself and dogs, if I forgot or was sidetracked, sure I would be reminded next time but my YO is not rabid. On reflection, it does come down to how much control the YO has. We actually have a lot of unwritten rules, or rather commonsense applied and if she had requested something was done, it would be. I would pay considerably less for part livery if I chose a yard that did not have a floodlit school but that was an absolute for me not a nice to have. So when people are having a bit of a pop at the OP as they manage fine without a school... fair enough, their choice, but not what OP was paying for.

I'd be really interested to know exactly how much people think they are paying for these extra facilities. Around here, a regular DIY yard is about £20-25/wk. A "posh yard" charges £40/week, so £20 extra.. Call it £21/wk and divide it up into days and that is £3/day for the facilities... So two days of facilities closed would be £6 - would a £6 refund make you feel better!

Seriously though, it sounds like the YO had had enough of being treated like the dirt by a livery that they either couldn't discover, or couldn't prove left the mess, so they shut the school for two days - not the end of the world, but annoying enough to make people realise what they would miss if the facility was removed.. The average school costs between £20k and £60k, and is a big investment. You would hope you could rely on people to treat it well, but obviously sometimes you can't..

I think a booking system would be a good idea. I would go and have a calm chat with the YO and suggest that it may help/reveal the suspect, then say that you may have to pay for your lesson anyway, and is there any compromise that could be reached - say that you understand their viewpoint rather than demanding your rights..

Ooh crikey, I thought this had conked out last night ;)
To those that are interested...
We've asked for a yard meeting to discuss issues face to face, like adults ;) don't know if it will actually happen ... you can but try!

And yes I know it's only 2 days, may not seem like much but my horse is in full work, my lessons cost more than my livery, I have to take holiday to fit them in and I get hacked off when our training is interrupted:eek: :D I'm a control freak :p

As a YO, I can understand why she has done this, when manure is left it is the most fustrating thing. However, when I had this problem I put a note up saying CCTV would be fitted and a fine of £20 per poo would be charged.........this stopped it straight away!

Now if I occassionally (very rare) get someone that doesn't pick it up, I put a polite note up on the whiteboard as a reminder and they are all very good at reading it and picking it up :)
