In student fees protest on bbc news now.
Oh yes, do lets pay for them all to be 'educated' - what a waste of money.
Time to bring in the army, lets see them face some real men.

I'm at work just on the same street as the protests and am half expecting them to spread down here outside our offices. I have absoloutely no sympathy for them as there are better, more effective ways of protesting rather than throwing flares and sticks. I was watching the mounted police charge towards the crowd and wished I was one of the riders ;)

I am 'sick on the sofa' and honestly it is setting my recovery back weeks. They are such stupid, inarticulate thugs - why don't they just get a job? Why educate thugs?
One of them 's just said 'I will protest until the law is revoked and the Lib Dems do what they said they would do before the election'.
Lets hope he's not studying politics, or economics, or English for that matter.
There is one police officer in hospital having been pulled off a horse, he has a serious neck injury.
I honestly think the whole damn lot of them should spend a week or two in Helmand Province, but for the fact that they'd be a bloody liability.
Just heard a horse has been down as well.

Oh yes, they do come out with some cr*p, don't they? I really hope some of them get trampled on to be honest - it might teach them to think about their actions in future. No doubt there'll be some of them claiming compensation for being treated roughly by the Police... and they're meant to be the country's future!

'We're here because we like if we like have to pay like more fees we like won't be able to pay them back later like when we're like earning?'
'I personally don't think we have like world class universities now?'
'Violence at least it like gives them a sign that we are like serious?'
'There are reports that the police like dragged a man out of like a wheelchair to beat him.'
'I don't think it's fair'

Dear God. I think I will emigrate. And take my articulate and reasonable children with me, in case this is catching.

Two police casualties and at least one protester.

Rubbish bin set alight, pretty big blaze, and they are stoking it with rubbish. Personally I think they should now bring in water cannon, and they should all be in prison.

Disgraceful.

Never heard such a bunch of inarticulate drones.
Spme complet pratt has just claimed he has seen four year old girls being trampled on.
If this is what is in our Universities, they want closing.

Dregs of Society.

The students have put graffiti on Churchill’s statue – morons!

Policemen are coming off horses and people are getting injured

Why should people that have never paid tax in their life dictate to a government that is on its knees how money should be spent! The whole university thing is such a waste of money for most – they end up getting a job that is nothing to do with their qualification, moan that they are so far in debt and seem to think they will walk out of university and walk straight into a job paying £25k despite most having buggar all work experience! The whole degree thing is so watered down because everyone can get one!

So why should we work to send every tom, dick and harry to university - you can even get into some with 2 E’s when the vast majority are going to pee it up the wall or get a job that is buggar all to do with their qualification. A lot are going to keep out of the real world and avoid the world of work and early morning starts!

The ones on the BBC News at the moment cannot I promise you string a sentence together between them.

They are so THICK they do not even understand what they are protesting against.

I have not been so angry in years.

Please, please don't think this is representative of all students! Most are actually functioning members of society.
How about they do two years of national service prior to university? Nothing a haircut as some phys wouldn't cure. *Chuckles*. Kettle of fish. :D
Hats off to police I wouldn't have kept as cool as they have.

I agree, and I'm a part time (OU) student myself!
But allthe intelligent ones are at Uni, working, aren't they?

This bunch of morons wants a good clip round the ear and a spell in the army, I tell you.

Maybe there should be a list of jobs that require uni and then everyone else has to get a 'proper job'

You can get into uni with two E's...honestly. What is the point in getting in to debt to probably fail a worthless degree!!

They are just lazy and by going they avoid getting up in the mornings and getting a job

Sorry, not true. Many have had jobs previously, have jobs while at university and pay tax afterwards. My friends have two or three jobs to support themselves at university. Most work very hard to get to university and stay there.
And A-levels have so little relevance to a degree I don't know how they can be used to access anybodies potential.

llewellyn, I have no doubt you are right, but this lot in Parliament Square, honestly can't SPELL 'tax'.
People who assualt the Police, deface public property, start fires and fling missiles at Police and Horses belong IN PRISON where they will of course be fully funded. Though half of them appeared to be Foreign Students. Who are on camera and who presumably can have their student visas revoked.

Honestly people like that - fair play. But alot don't feel they need to work for it. I went to college to do a degree and worked two jobs. I'm 27 so hopefully not too out of touch.

I just hate the people on the tv to be honest!

Should have charged at them far earlier. Absolute idiots. They aren't even very good. At least Otis Ferry got inside Parliment... Patrick Kielty sums it up really "Note to Millbank Students - No petrol bombs. No balaclavas. No plastic bullets. In Belfast that's a Rave not a Riot. See me after." :D Still these are the great minds of tomorrow. Apparently.

I had some sympathy for the proper protesters, at the first protest it seemed very much a case of the minority hijacking it. However anyone who goes on these protests now is an utter fool, especially if they think it won't turn violent.

I believe they would label their efforts as Epic Fail, as it hasn't exactly achieved anything has it?

This is what 13 years of labour has given us... a load of semi educated half wits with a over grown sense of intitlement and a someone else should pay mentality... BRING BACK NATIONAL SERVICE ...

So all know I am currently a student who has three jobs, support a family and in full time university education. For one I do not support this increase in the tuition fees not because I think it is immoral or people will pay so much more in return due to the amount of debt they leave university with. I do not agree with it because it will give incentive for people to insure they get a job under the 21.000 pound threshold. Another reason for my support in the protesting is because the job I will go into will be of the amount where my children will get no extra support financially so will be harder for them having to fund a lot by themselves as I have done. I was in the army for 6 years before I decided to boost my career with higher education and for this I still have to pay the way the same as everyone else, regardless of the amount of tax I have paid and with no support from the army. I think that these protesters are right in there need to protest but the method in which many have done so it disgusting. I will say this though you will probably find out though that easily 20% of the rioting protesters have no intention of going to university and are there for just a scrap. The other 20% are too young to think for themselves and seem illiterate and uneducated, but that is probably because they are not yet at university and have not had the chance to develop their minds adequately to form a fully justified and articulate argument. I agree with llewellyn many should go to work before entering university as it will give them a better drive and understanding of what they want to achieve and the many of foreign students should be made to pay back what they owe regardless if they leave this country or not.
Rant over!!

I remember when I was a student there were protests about the abolition of the student grant (of which I was a grateful recipient). I can remember chuckling to myself as all the self-righteous rich kids who's Dad paid for them went off in a huff to London while those of us with grants tended to stay behind (couldn't afford political self-righteousness :D).

I'll never forget the look of horror on one girl's face when I told her I wasn't going - still makes me laugh now!

I would imagine that a large proportion of those rioting are crusties who have never set foot in a university and "Religious Studies", 2-hr per week types who are going through a phase of indignation and have the time to indulge it.

Theotherhalf - good for you, can't be easy!

You say there are people who are not that stupid, but really think about it, after 10 years under the threshold it is written off. Some women who have children or the men who stay at home and are house husbands ,after uni will not pay as they would be under the threshold with the new threshold now being increased means that they can now work part time without the fear of hitting that level. People are not stupid the average working class family can and do live very comfortably on less that 19,000 a year thus never paying back what they owe.

Hear hear! I saw a facebook status saying "university education is a right, not a priviledge". Absolutely wrong. it is NOT a god given right to go to university, something that is awarded to those who can in the future contribute most to society through this further education. Sadly most "students" these days only want their right to go to uni for the social life and the "life expereience", apparently. Try the real world, it will advance you far more in a short time!

However, after that wee rant, I am sure most of these militant yobs are not students, but just anyone up for a right with the police!

^^ This!! They're the idiots camping in our blummin cafe!!!! What people aren't seeing is the majority of us in lectures getting on with it!!

I suppose it really is just too much for some to imagine that we're all of that mentality and use stupid phrases like "get a proper job". I had a proper job, I came to uni, when I leave I want to get a better job and keep working my way up.

If university places were cut such that there were enough for those who are working hard, and none for the rent a mob we saw today, we could probably afford to support those like you who are genuine a good deal more.
If you try to put everyone in University, it is self evident that a) the standards will go through the floor and b) the students will have to pay their way.
Simple.

Doubt it, most foreign students have to REALLY pay to study in the UK which is why unis try so hard to attract them (do know a young man over from here who went to a very good uni where most UK folk are required to have pretty high grades to get in, his parents just paid a wedge of cash).

This is what 13 years of labour has given us... a load of semi educated half wits with a over grown sense of intitlement and a someone else should pay mentality... BRING BACK NATIONAL SERVICE ...

As I'm sure the army would say, why would they want to spend time and money training people who don't want to be there?

I agree with this. Less students will be beneficial, if I hear the phrase "degrees are worthless" one more time, I may go mad! I just feel that using money to do it isn't the best way. No matter what happens, someone gets hurt. I hope one day there will be a far better system in place. One that isn't elitist in terms of money or "class", but keeps the standards high.
