Young Driver - Trailer/Towing/Rules

I'm a tad thick when it comes to towing rules, et al, so Help please!

D1 is seventeen and a half and has started driving lessons :D

She'd like to start towing as soon as she's experienced enough to, and has passed her towing test.

We have a Disco and a heavy three horse trailer. We've refurbished it and it's sound and solid, but definitely heavy.

I'm wondering if there is a weight limit on what a young/new driver can tow.

Also, can her Dad or I sit with her whilst she practices towing? We both have grandad towing/driving rights. Neither of us have taken any towing or HGV tests.
 
I think once you have passed a driving test then you can go straight into learning to tow but I would imagine the insurance will be high on a suitable towing car! (We were quoted over £1k to add me as a named driver on an old 4x4, even though I had been driving for 4 years!)

Are you not getting a lorry now?
 
Ouch. Not looking forward to the insurance bill!

Still looking at lorries :)

Contemplating having both... Depends on what D1 will be allowed/able to tow.

Our trailer is huge and heavy, so need to know if it's legally ok for her :)
 
With her car test and her named on car insurance you or your husband can accompany her while towing the trailer. Same rules apply as learning to drive (ie L plates front and rear, you must not be on phone, over the limit etc) except that she can drive on motorways.
ETA- you are not allowed to accompany her driving a lorry on grandfather rights, supervising driver must have passed test.

Although I have answered a similar query from your good self in the HHO TOWING CLINIC this one has added elements to it

You can supervise for B+E but not for any LGV unless you have actually passed the DSA test for that particular LGV category you wish to supervise
Those were the new laws that came out in April 2010

A newly qualified car driver can do the B+E as soon as their licence comes back from DVLA with the full B and provisional B+E on it

A driver can tow on a B only licence but the rules are strict as to what they can do - please post the relevant details in the HHO TOWING CLINIC and I'll answer as to whether they can do this or that on a B licence

Unladen or kerb weight
GVW
towing capacity

TRAILER
As it has no plated MAM then the tyre load ratings on each tyre so I can add them all together to get the MAM

I missed that bit - must wake up!!

No way can that be towed on a B licence - it must be a B+E

B licence towing allows for one horse or two very light ponies in a very light trailer with a smallish vehicle - smallish 4x4s are common
